William Shatner Confirms STAR TREK 3 Cameo Has Been Offered

Earlier this week, Devin Faraci from Badass Digest claimed that a role has been written in Star Trek 3 for William Shatner ("T.J. Hooker"). A few days later Shatner said he hadn't been contacted by anyone regarding it, but today he has changed his tune.

Five days ago, sources told Badass Digest that a pivotal role had been written for William Shatner in Star Trek 3, and that it would involve him sharing scenes with Leonard Nimoy. The original Kirk and Spock haven't been together on screen since 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Two days later, Shatner responded to the rumor by tweeting:

"I don't know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it's just rhetoric to cause hype."

Earlier today, Shatner was in attendance at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con and confirmed that producer J.J. Abrams has reached out to him about making an appearance in Star Trek 3.

Abrams called Shatner to say, "I’m calling, Bill, because the director of the Star Trek movie, the next one, has had an idea where you might be involved in it. So I am calling to see if you would be interested." Shatner replied, "Oh, yeah. If it is meaningful." (via trekmovie.com)

"When Leonard was Spock in that first movie, I said to Leonard "you know when you go back in time you are still old," Shatner added. "So it depends on what you do with the character. I said "I would be delighted." And he said "you can’t say anything." And I said "I wont even tell my wife. I wont tell anyone. I wouldn’t do that, JJ. So I get back from Australia and it is all over the Internet, that the director held an interview and said they wanted Shatner and Nimoy to be in the next movie. I bet JJ is frothing at the mouth. So the news is out that they have an idea that they want Leonard and myself. They might want Leonard and myself. I don’t know what to do with it. How do you get me fifty years later into the movie…I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea.

Most of us had thought we had seen the last of William Shatner as James Tiberius "Jim" Kirk after seeing him die 1994's Star Trek Generations while helping Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) defeat Dr. Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell). Then J.J. Abrams took over the franchise and gave it a hip reboot. There was of course a cameo appearance by Leonard Nimoy in 2009's Star Trek, but there was also a cameo written for Shatner. His role was cut before filming ever began.

Oh. Badass Digest actually DOES get scoops right, I suppose. Odd. Should we actually start entertaining the possibility that...*gasp*...they might be a legitimate source of movie news and scoops? Maybe we can stop the irrational hating of Devin Faraci and his website?

Knowing CBM.com...probably not haha.

If its only half as extraneous as nimoys cameo in "into darkness" then it will be stupidly extraneous.

But it's the shat. So it's good.

This series has already derailed off the logic track so who cares if it makes since? Not Roberto Orci, that's for sure.

A movie coming out for the 50 year anniversary of Star Trek NEEDS to have Shatner and Nimoy make cameos...I don't care HOW they do it, it needs to happen.

@Chaud I prefer Deep Space 9. I liked the characters more and it at least came to a well written and satisfying conclusion.

Shatner's right...there is no way, even in the science fiction universe, to get him back into this new "JJ-verse". Unless the Shat was stowing away in Spock Prime's fancy ass ship, and has remained hidden in that same ship all this time, unbeknownst to anyone but himself...Kirk Prime is still back in the "other" timeline. This timeline already has a Kirk...in Chris Pine's character. Unless they do a time travel (past/future not alternate) skit, they have no vehicle to bring Kirk Prime to this reality, and can only see a future version of Pine's Kirk.

I hope it doesn't happen. They need to let go of the past and move forward. Plus, Shatner is a crappy actor and always has been.

if Shatner does do a cameo, it'll be in a non-Kirk role. Remember his Kirk from the Prime Universe is dead (and no the Shatner Novel's where Kirk is revived is not canon), there's no way for his Kirk to travel back to the past & be part of the Alternate Universe, not even by using the Nexus from ST: Generation, because whatever part of himself he left in the Nexus, cannot leave the Nexus (just like Guinin said she couldn't in that film), so yea.....Kirk cameo won't happen in Star Trek 3, if a cameo is done, it'll be a non Kirk role, plain & simple, there's no way to use TOS-Era Kirk, without creating a plot hole in this film.

Kirk did come back after his death in Generations, this is canon. Read the books. Just to add in the books where he comes back, we learn that V'ger was actually repaired and is technically a Borg.

@Austin...Just to back up my previous post and discredit yours.

The Star Trek canon is the set of all canonical material in the Star Trek universe. The official Star Trek website formerly defined canon as comprising the television series Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, and the motion pictures in the franchise.[1] Later changes to the Star Trek website acknowledges that this definition is not set in stone, but that the notion of what constitutes canon in Star Trek is fluid, open to interpretation and debate.[2] The most recent iteration of the website has removed all references to a canon policy.

Maybe Spock Prime could fish Kirk from the book universe and both prevent the destruction of Romulus in the prime timeline and then completly erase this JJ timeline.

Those who say Kirk couldn't come back or enter the new "Abrams universe" is wrong. We're talking science fiction here. Kirk could be taken out of the time/space continuum at any point that some alien race would need to grab him for some reason. The best I could think of would be that he is pulled out just before the Enterprise-C mission with the Nexus, eliminating him being in the Nexus totally and thus leaving the Enterprise-D crew to die in the future against Tolian Soran.

The only problem I would have is how are they going to explain the different eyes of Captain Kirk now? Pine's Kirk has blue eyes, while Shatner's Kirk is brown. Little nitpicking but still --

"Plus, Shatner is a crappy actor and always has been."

His Emmy & Golden Globe wins, plus tons of other nominations, disagree with you.
