Noah Hawley's DOCTOR DOOM Movie Is Somewhat Inspired By CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Speaking to The Observer, LEGION showrunner Noah Hawley has revealed that his approach to the upcoming Doctor Doom project is somewhat inspired by the MCU film Captain America: The Winter Soldier...

FOX's X-Men universe has seen something of a resurgence in recent years with more director-driven, left-of-field projects like Logan and Deadpool offering unique alternatives to the usual superhero fare. While the future of the franchise is uncertain as we await the details of Disney's acquisition of the studios' assets, future projects of that ilk are still being worked on.

One that was announced to great fanfare last year at Comic-Con, was the solo Doctor Doom film from the creator of the much-loved X-Universe show Legion Noah Hawley. While speaking to The Observer Hawley revealed that he's still very much hard at work on the film and that it will be a mix of genres not unlike Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

“What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the King of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?…It’s something that Captain America: The Winter Soldier did really well, which was kind of make a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of, and I don’t want to say too much about it, but it is a mixture of genres… the mandate is not to re-launch the Fantastic Four franchise as much as it is to take this fascinating and under-served character and really build a movie about him where we ask the question: Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What does he really want?”

While Hawley's name and pedigree is sure to excite many, some might be less than enthused at the reminder that the project isn't going to re-launch the Fantastic Four franchise. Regardless, the notion of seeing an anti-hero Doctor Doom as the protagonist of his own film is an exciting one.

There's no word yet on when we can expect to see the film or how far along it is, especially with a planned fourth season of Fargo on the cards and his feature film debut Pale Blue Dot sure to be keeping Hawley very busy. What's more, the Disney acquisition could swoop in and make all this moot.

What do you think? Are you excited about Hawley's Doctor Doom movie? What kind of film would you like to see it be? Do you think it will happen at all? Leave your thoughts below.

@cookiecrumble - I agree, wether is Fox or Marvel Studios who develop this movie Noah Hawley is a keeper.

Hopefully this fits in the MCU, I would love to see a Doom origin movie before a F4, also after this movie Doom can appear in other movies as a villain/antagonist/ally, also they could build up to a Secret Wars adaptation at the end of Phase 4 with Doctor Doom front and center.

Good to see an update on this film. Out of all the comic book films in flux right now (including DC), this is the one I'm most curious about.

Hawley did great work on Fargo and Legion, so I can only imagine what his take on Victor Von Doom will be like.

@L0RDbuckethead - I like having Doom introduced completely separate from the F4. Having their origins tied together in one movie is a disservice to the character and Fox has proven that they can't make it work.

Also, I find it not as interesting. Having heroes and villains come about from the same catastrophe or tech is boring. Pitting two very different forces against each other is just a better choice.

@TomSolo - would be pretty interesting if this film was integrated into the MCU. If the Fantastic Four were then introduced in their own, separate movie, a future instalment could have Doom crossover and clash with the Four in something that'd play like more of an event film. That could even lead into future crossovers with those characters and the wider MCU - Dr Doom taking on the Fantastic Four and the Avengers would be a sight to see!

@TomSolo - Agreed. They should use the Doom film as a villain origin (hell, maybe even make Latveria a neighboring country to Sokovia for future references) and then have some sort of time jump between the first and second film for an easy backdoor origin for the F4 to be introduced in the sequel, or even the third film.

Can he just hold off on this a couple of years and do it in the MCU?

@RolandD - This would probably be one of my most anticipated movies in case it was set in the MCU.

@RolandD - seriously. Like this would be perfect for the end of Phase IV or beginning of Phase V

@auditore - if Noah agreed to do this movie, its because he's really interested in the character and has a vision, unlike those 3 Gambit directors.

That's great to hear about the inspiration (in the same interview he spoke about how he thought Civil War did a great job balancing action with deep moments of important dialogue), but he should hold off until the deal goes through and cast this guy:

@HeavyMetal4Life - I'd actually like to see Rami Malek play Von Doom. A younger approach, but I could see him doing a creepier take on the character.

@HeavyMetal4Life - He can absolutely nail the role, but I don't think they will cast him or that he will accept it.

@KWilly - I'm not too familiar with him.

@aflynn - yeah he would be awesome, I have no doubt he'd be able to embody the character and play him really creepy (which is why I put that Nightcrawler gif there). But yeah, him accepting the role would be something else...

@KWilly - Rami's a great choice, imo. Maskless, you have to see him in college when he's trying to build the machine to get to the hell dimension AND eventually ascending to the Latverian throne, so he shouldn't be too old.
