Conan's Jason Momoa Is Really Impressive

Conan expert Patrice Louinet had the good fortune to see some set pictures from Conan and was impressed.

Patrice Louinet who has studied, worked on and edited the works of Conan creator Robert E. Howard for decades, was able to take a look at some Conan set pictures belonging to Fredrik Malmberg Conan's producer.

Here is what he had to say (In translated text).....

"Got to see Fredrik Malmberg, who showed me a few pics - pre CGI - of Jason Momoa as Conan. Despite this, these pics were enough to convince me a bit more that Momoa is an excellent Conan, as far as his looks is concerned. He is very close to the character as described by Howard: he is hairy, dark, scarred and muscular yet lithe, devoid of the body-builder physique syndrome. Really impressive. More, Momoa has taken the Howard books with him, often reading a few passages for himself before shooting to get into his character."

Official Conan images will not be released until Comic Con.

Conan is directed by Marcus Nispel and stars Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan and Rachel Nichols. It is due out in 2011.

I still have a feeling this remake will suck because most remakes these days have always sucked. Here is how I know if a film will be a mindless action film based off the trailer:
1. The trailer includes loud rock music
2. There are tons of quick clips of action sequences
3. There is little to no talking and or things that point to a plot

Prove me wrong Conan remake, but so far the originals are always better than the remake. How sad.

the conan films wear 80s films that have been left alone like clash of the titans... maybe this will be a good remake .. but then again dont hold me to that ..conan is like cap america .. in comics it has a big following a lot of people will be upset ..if they mess it up .. conan is the warrior king ..arnie.s films wear the dogs bollox when i was a kid

Mamoa seems to be prepping hard for this role. Hopefully the director is as well.

Its gonna be SH1TE!

[frick]ing STARGATE BOY ain't CONAN, and we're gonna have the actress who's gonna play RED SONJA play someone else in this CONAN movie, says it all!

Unless she in fact is playing a cameo as RED SONJA in this, no way does it deserve a chance!

Talond, I think he's still upset that Baking Soda wasn't picked for Cap:)

This does look to be shaping up pretty badly but who knows. I'm gonna at least wait for some pics/clips before I cast it down in judgement! Oh yes.

End of the day it's the fans, not the creators, who determine who makes a good ______. As much as this guy might fit the casting, I won't vouch for him until I see his work.

Honestly though, leaving this guy aside, Arnold had like 5 lines of dialog throughout his entire "Conan" career, is it really going to be THAT hard to surpass his version of The Barbarian? I like the actor/politician/funny guy Arnold is, but let's be realistic about his role in the original version of this movie...

Ya know, Stargate Atlantis was not great but Jason Momoa was a high point of the show. He may do a great Conan so I am going to wait and see. Best case is he is a great Conan worst case he is better than Dolf Lundgren in Masters of the Universe.

I have to say I was deadset against Momoa when I first heard he had the part. The more I actually think about it, I am sort of warming to the idea.

I'm huge fan of the 80s films, my older brother got me into them when I was kid. I think it is really cool that a remake is coming. Granted, I don't think it will live up to the classic but I will give it a chance. I was really pissed about the casting of Momoa but like others of said I'm warming up to the idea. I will say this, it seems like he does not to bulk up a bit.

Dude, HOLLYWOOD can do better than that, hell i'd even pick EVANS over him! : P

I'm sure EVANS would jump at the chance to play in another CBM, hell even REYNOLDS!!! : D

I'll watch it.
Which actor is shown as he/she looks?? All of them have make up or visual effects to look better. He'll have the muscle in the film. With the right effects, even Larry King could look like Conan...

I don't care what anyone says. He looks dirty and not hot...

It might be a good movie, but I don't want to go see it and watch it with my sister while she blurts out how sexy he is when I'll be thinking about how he needs a bath. The trailer will have to be pretty awesome to get me in the theater.

"Does anyone actually care about this film being made?"

Yes.

"Honestly though, leaving this guy aside, Arnold had like 5 lines of dialog throughout his entire "Conan" career, is it really going to be THAT hard to surpass his version of The Barbarian?"

No, mostly because his version of The Barbarian was about as far as one could get in terms of personality.

"Pre CGI?What's that about? Will there be CGI added to the actor?I don't really get that."

Over at the REH Forums, Patrice said that Momoa's eyes will be coloured digitally. I don't know why they wouldn't just use contacts, but whatever, at least they're going to do his eyes at all.
Taranaich
Taranaich - 4/1/2010, 2:46 AM
Here's the quotes in question from Patrice:

CGI will be for the blue eyes. Perhaps more, I don’t know.

Remember, I only got to *see* these pictures; I don’t have them. I saw a muscular guy, but not a bodybuilder type. His skin his dark, but he doesn’t have the surfer look we could fear. I didn’t try to compare him to an artist’s depiction. I only wanted to see if he “looked the part”. So, basically, what I said; physically he has all the attributes of REH’s Conan, and none of the dull-witted Viking bodybuilder I was fearing we would get.

I *know* it’s frustrating to have to go by these general descriptions, but it’s the best I can offer.

loganoneil
loganoneil - 4/1/2010, 8:49 AM
Ghola - The problem (aside from his phyical stature) is that from what I've seen of his work, he's not a very good actor. In 'Stargate: Atlantis' his pissed-off game face made him look constantly constipated. And aside from that, all he's ever really done were bit roles on TV. He has done/shown NOTHING that warrants his casing for this role. I know what you're probably going to say, "But Ah-nuld wasn't an Oscar-winning actor either!" To which I respond, "At least he LOOKED the part!" That, and they were smart enough not to give the Governator a lot of dialog in the films. Bring a barf bag along when you see the film, I think you're going to need it!

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/1/2010, 9:28 AM
he just looks NOTHING like conan, whether its the original books, robert jordan's novels, OR the comics. he's too small, and...he just doesn't look like him!

i have a bad feeling about this one, even though i would kill to see a good, new conan movie.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/1/2010, 9:30 AM
@ loganoneil

its not really a matter of AH-NULD not getting a lot of lines. Conan is the strong, silent guy. but he's smart too. he's the guy that doesn't need to talk trash, he'll mess you up either way.

i think they did a poor job in the old movies of showing how smart conan really is.
Taranaich
Taranaich - 4/1/2010, 10:17 AM
"If he is striving to bring the Howard Conan to the big screen, there is a LOT of forgiving I am willing to extend to this movie. "

It's just a shame the script isn't doing the same.

"Conan is the strong, silent guy."

The only reason Arnold had so few lines in Conan the Barbarian was because he could barely speak understandably in English. A lot of lines had to be cut. Up till Conan the Barbarian, Conan was a fairly talkative character: not loquacious by any means, but neither was he near-mute.
