Dark Tower TV Series Lands At HBO!

Bryan Glazer recently revealed that he and director Ron Howard are still very much behind an adap of Steven King's Dark Tower. Now he confirms that the TV segments linking the movies will also happen, and at HBO..

The other day producer Bryan Glazer said that budget cuts ensured that a Dark Tower adaptation "is gonna happen". Even though the planned movie versions of Steven King's saga are still without a studio behind them after Universal bailed out, it seems that the TV segments of the unprecedented multi-platform project have found a home at HBO. Producer Bryan Glazer revealed the following to MTV..

We're going to do ['The Dark Tower'] with HBO. We'll do the TV with HBO, and we'll do the movie with… to be determined. We'll do it right.

This should make Gunslinger fans very happy indeed. HBO have been the standard bearers for high quality, adult TV shows for many years now and have recently produced their first, very successful, Fantasy series in Game Of Thrones. I for one am delighted that they have chosen to follow that up with The Dark Tower. Of course without the movies it is unclear if the show will still happen so lets hope a studio grows a pair and gets behind this ambitious project soon. Updates as we have em.

Is this a good thing?Think about it.Back when Universal were making it, it was going to be a Universal film and the series would air on a Universal owned network like NBC, Syfy or USA.Most likely NBC.

Now with HBO doing the series, is it going to really sync up if WB, HBO's sister company, isn't producing the films?

Originally, you had the same studio oversseing both film and TV projects, but will it go as smoothly with two separate studios in charge of the movies and the show?

Also, if you're making a TV series that plays directly into a film series, does it make sense to put it on a premium channel that most of the country doesn't have and aren't going to pay for? While I do believe The Dark Tower works better on premium cable or even basic cable like AMC or FX, you're losing a large chunk of the audience by losing a network or more mainstream channel.

If they have HBO onboard, I wish they would drop the films and just make a TV series out of it.Between 7 novels and those comic book miniseries, there's way too much story and vital information for 3 films and 2 series, but more than enough for a 5 or 6 season show.

Though with Game of Thrones just starting, I could understand them not wanting to undertake another massive adaptation like this.

Warner Bros is making The Stand, so it would be interesting if the also picked up The Dark Tower films.

I think huge stories like this are better suited for a sereis. There is only so much one can compress into a couple hours. LotR was great but still had some stuff missing. Game of Thrones is a great example. HBO will make this very enjoyable and graphic.

TyrannicalOverlord- Pretty? Jensen Ackles is pretty. Jane's more... of the gruff, brooding, western type. In fact, i feel he's one of the few "western" types of actors that the industry has left. He has the inate ability to talk with his gaze. That's prefect for a gunslinger in my book ;)

Don't get me wrong, i do like Pierce an awful lot. I just don't see his presence being able to support the entire run of this concept alone. A single film sure. A trilogy on it's own is even pushing it. He certainly wouldn't opt for the tv series in between sequels.

I loved the books but wouldn't it make sense, now that they got backing from HBO to keep it as an ongoing 10-12 episode show on HBO instead of the 3 movies AND TV show? Make it like Game of Thrones and I think Dark Tower would be much better...this way they can cover a lot more material and remain more faithful to the books instead of trying to cram some of the books into a 2-2 1/12 movie and the rest into only 6 or 7 TV shows. They'll have more time in 1 hour weekly episodes than they will in a 2 hour movie. I think the story is MORE than adequate to have a 7 season show on HBO uncut. Plus I think Javier Bardem is going to be fine as Roland...he's an excellent actor. Puts my mind to ease knowing he has an Oscar already. At least they're not going with some unknown actor.

Or even better...since they don't have a production studio for the big movies, they should make the first book into a 12 episode season 1 on HBO to see how it favors with critics and fans and the ratings and THEN make the big screen movies...at least that way they don't have to waste the $100 million plus from the studio if the movie bombs and dies in the theaters.

HBO is the only medium that could pull the Dark Tower off. There's way too much cussin' and sex for regular TV and none of the other cable channels have the budget for quality storytelling that HBO does. HBO will easily be able to pull off The Gunslinger book, but they're gonna require mega mula to pull off the other books (Giant robot bears and ruined cities and such).
