First Official Look At Charlie Hunnam As The Lead In Guy Ritchie's KING ARTHUR

EW have given us our first look at Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam as the eponymous hero in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur. They also visited the set, and scored a few comments from the director about his adaptation's more unique and fantastical elements. Check it out!

After a four year absence from the big screen, Guy Ritchie looks set to make another big splash with his old-school spy thriller, The Man From U.N.C.L.Enext month. However, he's also been hard at work on his next project, King Arthur. EW had the chance to visit the director and cast on set, and have also given us our first look at the movie's star Charlie Hunnam as the legendary British king.

"I think where the pitfall has often been is trying to make King Arthur bland and nice, and nice and bland," Ritchie claimed, when asked why the character has struggled cinematically in the past, "The two qualities make rather compatible bed companions. Unfortunately, they’re not interesting to watch. Luke Skywalker was always the most uninteresting character in Star Wars because he’s the good guy. Good guys are boring."

Much like many of his former protagonists, Ritchie's Arthur looks to be a lot less clean-cut, and a little more rough around the edges. "He’s a street kid," Hunnam revealed, "There’s definitely a harder edge to him than people would imagine. It’s sort of classic Guy Ritchie stuff." Per EW, this version of Arthur was orphaned as an infant and raised by prostitutes in a 'street-wise hood' in 5th Century London. It's a big departure from the legend, but in keeping with Ritchie's talents.

However, with King Arthur, the talented director is about to delve into something he's a lot less well known for - fantasy. According to EW, despite it's urban setting, the movie is set to feature a variety of fantastical creatures, including giant snakes, humongous war elephants and a "monstrous viking-like creature known as The Nemesis." Vinnie Jones, anyone?

A young Arthur runs the back passages of Londonium with his crew, not knowing his royal lineage until he grabs Excalibur. Instantly confronted by the sword’s influence, Arthur is forced to make up his mind. He joins the rebellion and a shadowy young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to understand the magic weapon, deal with his demons and unite the people to defeat the dictator Vortigern, the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become king.

The movie is also set to star Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey as 'Guinevere', Djimon Hounsou as 'Bedivere', Eric Bana as 'Uther Pendragon' and Jude Law as the villainous 'Vortigern'. King Arthur is expected to hit theatres July 22, 2016.

Kong - Take it up with EW. They were the only ones on-set and they're (falsely or not) advertising this as "the first look" at Hunnam as Arthur.

It could be a costume. Or maybe they're just talking about the facial hair, the sword, & the scars.

UPDATE: EW also posted a gallery of images (40 minutes after the cover for some reason). @Kong it's actually starting to look like the t-shirt is part of his costume, lol

Thanks to @speedyg33 for the gallery find! :)

Guy Ritchie- God bless him, great director- is WAY mistaken; Good Guys aren't boring by nature or necessity. So many filmakers simply don't know how to make them as or more interesting than the villains. Comicbook films have often been the perfect example of this problem.

Raised by prostitutes. Yeah, that's like SOOO interesting. I don't think that's obviously trying too hard to be edgy or surprising at ALL

I was hoping this would be a more period authentic, knights-in-shining-armor epic ... just directed by Guy Ritchie.

This pic makes it look like "Leather Chaps: The Movie."

It can't be any worse than that piece of shit Pacific Rim.

Unless they're done in a really clever way, anachronisms just bother me. They're lazy.

Looking forward to this. Guy Ritchie is on of my favourite filmmakers, he's got a very unique style. Plus who doesn't like a good old historical epic, even though this is based on fiction.

He would be perfect for Green Arrow. I've always been a fan of anything King Arthur. Hope this ends up being good.

That looks boring as heck. I've never seen SOA, but he was a snoozefest in Pacific Rim. He displayed 0 acting range and was one of the worst parts of that movie. Poor guy couldn't even do an American accent.

Have yet to see a King Arthur film as good as Excallibur. The Directors cut of King Arthur with Stellan Skarsgard was pretty good but Excallibur is still totally bad ass!

from Wikipedia

"In different stories, there are different numbers of knights, ranging from 12 to more than 150. The Winchester Round Table shows 25 Knights"

Many spinoffs

While Excalibur is the best King Arthur Movie. I enjoyed Antoine Fuqua's movie not so much for the story, but how he fleshed out the other Knights of the Round Table. Mads Mikkelsen's Tristen and Ray Stevenson's Dagonet in particular.

Please, Charlie Hunnam ain't got shit on Bradley James. Good guys are boring? Well guess what Ritchie, the makers of the BBC show Merlin made Arthur work in a believable way without Nolanising him and making him 'edgier' than he's supposed to be.

This is the real King Arthur Mr. Ritchie, and he wasn't edgy or a street-kid; he was straight up the usual humourous and good-guy King Arthur;

he's partially right, good guys without complexity are boring, and his take sounds more cinematic and dramatic, not just bland and by the book boring, I personally love Guy's vision, RocknRolla is one of my all time favorites and the Sherlock films are pretty enjoyable, mainly because of Guy Ritchie's directing + charismatic leads

sign me up as... curious, we don't wanna get too excited
