Up until now, the teasers for Guillermo del Toro's new fantasy film The Shape of Water have been pretty mysterious, but the movie's final trailer features lots of footage we haven't seen before.

There's a potential major SPOILER early in the trailer, so check it out at your own risk:

Beyond the obvious blood and swearing that we expect from red band trailers, we also get a closer look into the film's Cold War vibe. The footage also features a bloody Michael Shannon after his character pays a visit to the creature.

The movie has generated lots of festival buzz, and looks like another awe-inspiring entry in del Toro's filmography.

The Shape of Water is an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
The Shape of Water hits theatres on December 8, and stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.

The picture looks spectacular, I'm glad you left behind that horrible palette that he used in Crimson Peak, he's a great filmmaker, only sometimes surpassed by his own style, even so a great filmmaker, this film has a look that reminds me of A cure for Wellness, which has an impeccable and elegant photograph.

For anyone who doesn't know much about The Shape of Water, it is this year's Golden Lion and I really believe a very strong Oscars contender for Best picture, and Best access for Sally Hawkins. I was lucky enough to see it earlier this year at a festival (with Mother!, The Post, Darkest Hour and Mudbound), and I can safely say it's that unique and that incredible.

My favorite movie this year.

@Asturgis - I saw it too and totally agree. Did you like The Post and Darkest Hour?

@Asturgis - Del Toro is front runner to win Best Director it looks like

@zephyrrr - I did like both of them, but it's really not the same thing. Both The Post and Darkest Hour are very historical, clinical, not really documentary-like per say, but very historical. Darkest reminded me of Citizen Cohn with James Woods. Same feel. Obviously not the same men, but same feel. And The Post is objectively more of the same, Spielberg has done it before and he will do it again. It's really good, but expected. Nothing unique about it.

Oldman might get Best actor out of Darkest Hour, but to me those movies are a little bit like Schindler's List, for example, they're amazing but you don't necessarily want to see them more than once? Plus the genre has been done many times before.

But Shape of Water? Oh boy. If that's not a unique movie, I don't know what is.

@MarvelDCfan18 - Yeah, maybe so. There are so many categories it could win, including Best cinematography. Sally Hawkins blew me away. I didn't really like Mother! but I know it's a great movie, just not my cup of tea. Too "high" for me, just like everything Aronofsky does, but Jennifer Lawrence was also great in it. Meryl Streep was meh in The Post.

I really think Hawkins will win (she might even get a second nomination for Maudie). Or Diane Kruger, because she was heartbreakingly unbelievable in Into the Fade.

Did he want to remake The Creature From The Black Lagoon, but couldn't get the rights?

I'm a huge Creature fan, and I'm always afraid of how they would make him look if the movie was remade, but I'd be perfectly fine with this look.

And yes, I know he's called the Gill Man, but I always knew him as The Creature from the time I was little.

This was an incredible film.

I'm glad i watched it before seeing this trailer cause it spoils the entire movie.

Saw this earlier in the week as a test audience and it's very very good. Had like one moment that seemed off beat but it's classic Del Toro. A nice cleansing after Crimson Peak lol
