FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 Star Mads Mikkelsen Says There Will Be "A Bridge" Between His And Johnny Depp's Grindelwald

Mads Mikkelsen is no stranger to playing villains, but he'll be taking on one of his most complex yet in Fantastic Beasts 3. In that movie, which is currently shooting in the UK, the Doctor Strange and Rogue One star will take over the role of Gellert Grindelwald from Johnny Depp.

Depp didn't exactly blow fans and critics away with his performance, but his take on the character was unique enough that it's got everyone wondering what Mikkelsen has planned.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor elaborated on how his work will both differ from and respect what's come before. "Well it's going to be me, so that's a difference," he started.

"No, this is the tricky part. We're still working it out. There has to be a bridge between what Johnny did and what I'm going to do. And at the same time, I also have to make it my own. But also we have to find a few links [to the previous version of the character] and some bridges so it doesn't completely detach from what he's already masterfully achieved."

With any luck, Mikkelsen playing Grindelwald will succeed in making the villain feel like the formidable dark wizard we've heard so much about over the years. Depp, on the other hand, delivered one of his typical, campy performances, so it's no wonder fans were desperate for Colin Farrell to return after the sequel!

Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently set to be released on July 15th, 2022.

I'm still waiting for Ezra Miller to be replaced from this movie too.

Plus while WB is at it, Amber Heard should be replaced from Aquaman also.

@BlackIceJoe - Ezra Miller's "acting" is pure cringe. I can't believe in a time where actors as talented as Oscar Isaac and Robert Pattinson are leading these projects that WB couldn't even find someone half-decent for Flash.

@BlackIceJoe - Amber (woman) and Ezra (gay) are untouchable. If Johnny wanted to keep his job, he should have announced he was changing his name to Jamie Depp.

@tmp3 - Ezra is a good choice for Zack Snyder's Flash. He plays that version of the character well and it was good casting. Except that version of the Flash sucks and should never have been allowed to exist.

Did Depp film anything during his day on set, guess they could pull something similar to
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Was interested in first film, expected it to be a one off thing, second movie was crap. With that massive drop off in quality and the Depp bullshit, yeah, no interest in this movie

Haven't seen the second movie, but it could also be that Grindelwald could take up a new appearance every movie?

Unlike a lot of franchises where this would bother me, the fact that it’s a world where polyjuice potion and animagus’ and a bunch of other shape shifting methods exist I think if it’s touched on in universe briefly it’s fine especially since they got a fantastic replacement

They should have kept Colin Ferrel. He was perfect for grindlewal. What a shame

Depp's performance was more than fine as Grindelwald, he was hammy & flashy, but he wasn't outright cheesy or broad, there was depth to it. The movie was otherwise so drab & boring that Depp brought life to scenes with his larger than life figure, so it worked for FB2.
Mads is a strong actor, & I expect a more subdued performance from him & maybe less popped collars. I prefer him over Depp, so that's something going for the movie & I actually want to see what he brings to the table as wizard hitler.
They really should end the series here though, the closer we get to the war the less our main cast has anything to do. Maybe make a 2 part Dumbledore movie afterwards, set during the wizard war to show us the famous duel with Grindelwald.
