This years Oscar host, James Franco has been cast as the character of The Wizard in Sam Raimi's upcoming 'Wizard of Oz' prequel 'Oz, The Great and Powerful'.
The film is set to start production this summer in July.

Word is that the story will center on a snake-oil salesman who travels to the land of Oz via a hot air balloon and encounters a group of sister witches.

There has had to be a reference to Oz in some comic book? I am not sure of a source however.

He'll be a good Wizard, but it'll take some aesthetics I think.

@I: The site isn't only for CBMs. It has sections for Fantasy, Video Games, Horror, Sci-Fi, Cartoons and Anime as you can see on the front page. It's not like this is a specialty channel like MTV that doesn't have a lot to do with music. Comic book movies are prominent always.

how can they make a prequel to a 50 year old movie...one of the greatest musicals of all time...its like making a prequel to Gone With The Wind!

@StingrayX

L. Frank Baum wrote 14 OZ books total. The first was "The Wonderful Wizard of OZ", which the 1939 film (a remake of the 1925 film by the way) was based on. The book explained, in detail, how the Wizard came to OZ which was left out of the film. This gives room for a prequel story to be made into a film.
And the classic 1939 film, as good as it was, was not an accurate adaptation of the book. It changed a bunch of things from the book. Dorothy did not recieve "ruby slippers". They were silver shoes. Glinda was NOT the "Good Witch of the North. She was "The Good Witch of the South" in the book. Dorothy was originally 12 years old, but the movie had her looking like she was 18 years old.Just a couple of examples.
Personally, I believe that these books should all be made into modern films (not musical ones), and made more acurately to the books. Some of which are borderline on horror stories.

I don’t care if they made a comic book in 1975. Leave this dumb F*king news to Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. There is nothing comic worthy about this movie.

1 Sam Raimie is a great example of a comic book movie destroyer

2 The Wizard of OZ? really, really?

I'm sorry, but you can justify this article all you want. This shit should not be anywhere near ComicBookMovie.com and it pollutes the web site. I need a gasmask...

Why shouldn't this be on ComicBookMovie.com? These stories have been put into comic form for years. Many publishers of comics have done it. Even Image produced an OZ comic series and Marvel is doing one right now.

Katy Perry i think could play a good Dorethy but if this is a prequal to the movie and how oz was sent to oz will there really be a dorethy? Franko would make a good Oz though (Pay no ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAINS) LOL or the people that tell you NO. Oh well I love this movie i just hope Rammi doesnt mess it up like Burtin ruined Willy Wonka.

As hot as she is, Katy Perry is too old. Dorothy is 12 years old in the books.

@Comedian03 - Ok maybe I got a little too heated, but I have been a member on this site for 4 years now and I really don’t want every new member thinking that they post any movie news on this site.

The CORE comic related news is what makes ComicBookMovie.com so great.

But yes on a slow day like Sat or Sun I totally agree... My Bad!

Cant have Mila as Wicked Witch of the West as chronologically it wont make sense, especially with Franco being a young Wizard (Those who have read/seen Wicked will know why... no spoilers from me)

Could be good, big Franco Fan!
