Fast Five director Justin Lin has a lot of offers right now, but one project that he was working on since 2009 is the Highlander remake for Summit Entertainment. Talking to MTV, he shared some new info on the status of the project.

"I've been working with ['Iron Man' writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway] on the script. That's one where Summit has been really good [about letting it develop], and for me, it's about making sure that we can take it to the place where I feel comfortable and great about making it. I feel like I have a very good studio and team and we're working on it."

As you know, Lin is also working on another Terminator film, but it looks like Highlander is shaping up nicely so far.

"I have different projects at different stages. You work on so many projects all at once, and at some point, you have to make the call. I feel like right now, 'Highlander' is in pretty good shape, but I still have to see all the other things come together for us to go make it. When I get back [from promoting 'Fast Five' internationally] we'll keep working on it."

While I can't say this is a good idea, I am curious to see what will they do with this one. What are your thoughts on Highlander remake?

you know i thought a remake was a bad idea too but after watching the original (the other ones do not exist in my mind "ziest" my ass) it really does not hold up any more. the special effects are horrible the music is dated (and i love Queen)
maybe some fresh blood will do the franchise good, make it with sequels in mind so you dont butcher the story when you try to cash in

Don't like it. They'll probably get some preaty actor to play the part.

As much as I loved the original, I would like to see Connor played by a Scot.

Yeah the problem with the sequels was that they pretty much chucked the whole "there can be only one" thing to the side...a remake could be cool though, I'll remain optimistic, until I'm given a reason why I shouldn't be.

Gerard Butler...

TheBlacksmith - 5/9/2011, 9:25 PM
@DBeck. As much as I like Butler I feel he's a bit big for the part, and visually would resemble The Kurgan more. Personally I would like to see Kevin Mckidd as Connor, and Antonio Banderas as Ramirez.

I think that they should just let this one die.I loved the first one but hated the rest. I even used part 2 as a coaster for my beer. Let's get some original franchises rolling hollywood!

Highlander isn't Highlander without Queen:

They should take what's worked in the TV series as well as what was good from the first film . There are a LOT of good stories from the rich history they've originally created.

So why just Highlander? Why reboot? Simply discard the last film and pick a character that can fill the space and branch off on the rich tapestry they've crafted.

Heck, personally, I've always wanted a Methos movie and exploring 5000-plus years of that immortal's history.

I wish people could suspend the same amount of disbelief they do for the bond films for the Highlander films.

Actors really age. So after 1 or 2 films with the same people they start stretching.
BlackSands
BlackSands - 5/9/2011, 10:33 PM
@magicprime, that may be true... but the stories being told, now THAT is true immortality as it can be told again and again with a different perspective each time while staying true to the basic premise. Honestly, they should branch out.... why concentrate on just one Immortal when there's a ton of them to explore.

In all honesty, the first Highlander film even deviated a LOT from what the original creator envisioned. Prior to what we know of them today, there were no quickenings, there was no prize... they were just special people born with immortality once they reached the prime of their lifespan; good and bad immortals, living their lives across time.... with the original focus was the long-standing feud between a certain immortal (Connor) and another immortal (the Kurgan).

And they weren't sterile either, they could have kids but their kids weren't immortal.

I have something-something smelling funny in my office. Which is why I believe the first one was the best. They can try and do a remake, but for me, there can be only one.

The original movie and the show were awesome, but after all the horrid sequels, I say a remake would be great for this franchise.

James Purefoy for Connor Macleod!

What´s this talk about "the new generations"?

Can´t the new generation just rent a bloody DVD or simply use the megaupload?

Remake YES, franchise NO!

One film, that's all the Higlander was ever intended to be, no aliens, no cousins with TV shows and no animated series making up more crap that contradicts everything the original story was about.

James Purefoy would be an excellent choice for Connor McLeod. Antonio Banderas for Ramierez!

The ROCK for the part as the Kurgan!

Prequels, the Highlander movies would be fine as prequels, just don't make another sequel or a sequel to the remake. Utterly pointless!

@StrangeHero..I seen that anime. That sh** was awesome. Now this movie needs a remake. Just don't get carried away with all the crazy crap. After Highlander 1 crap just went down the drain.

Can hollywood stop with those pointless remakes of awesome movies? Conan the Barbarian, Total Recall and now Highlander??

Jesus, WHAT IS GOING ON IN HOLLYWOOD THESE DAYS??

Soon they will remake classic gems like Scarface and The Godfather, you just watch!

Hollywood is really getting on my nerves.

Sigh*

Highlander Anime is awesome directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri of Ninja Scroll & Vampire Hunter D.

I hope they give a different story but keep Queen on the soundtrack.

I think where the sequals missed the punch was how the story jumped back and foreward in time in the original. Opening up slowley where this imortal came from. The origin of the imortals should have continued to be a mystery and not explained that they are other deminsional or extraterestial. The trouble now is most of the thrill is gone that could be explored. Why? There is a whole TV series that delves into the imortal journey. Please, make me wrong and want to watch this.

I'd really dig Tom Jane too, and were he cast I'd watch with no complaints.

>>>BUT<<<

Theres a piece of dialogue from the original that needs to be addressed:

"I am Connor MacCleod of the claon MacCleod; born in 1518 on the shore of Loch Shiel, killed in battle in 1536."

Connor is 18. All of these actors are too old.

Wow - Tom Jane does look quite similar Lambert - I loved the first movie and I agree with Grif - the whole thing went to hell after number one - bad story lines and it kinda killed it.

I'd love to see an updated more gory version.

Yet another favorite movie from my youth raped by the studios and twisted into some sort of agonizingly perpetual franchise when they should have stopped after the first movie.

First The Crow, now this. Is there no originality left in Hollywood for action/fantasy?

So sad.
