McFarlane Sets Straight Wizard of Oz Rumors

Will Dakota Fanning be Dorothy or not? Basically, we don't know much of anything about when this will get off the ground...so be careful what you believe!

McFarlane himself is setting the record straight at Empire Online that he hadn't even heard the Fanning rumor. "If we just do a sugary sweet Dorothy that everybody has seen over and over for 50 years, as far as I'm concerned, that's too obvious. I'm happy to go with whoever will get the most people in the seats, but sometimes that can change from month to month." As for the status of the project, it might go into production early next year. But McFarlane admits these things can go awry. The script is undergoing a second rewrite, and plot elements like the main character being Dorothy's granddaughter aren't even locked down. Plus, the whole thing might not be as dark as you think. I think my "Twisted" version is a little scary for Warners to embrace. I essentially pitched "Lord of the Rings." It was big, it was bold and it wasn't a very pretty place. It was bad-ass! [...] To get the new audience you're going to have to put some edges on this thing. My version would rock! But they're all like, "We're spending $100m here, we can't go totally nuts, Todd!" So I've told them that the movie I like is the one they're willing to make!"

Nothing personal against Dakota Fanning but, I wouldn't cast her either. The way the story was written was not like the original movie. Don't get me wrong, every girl when they were little loved Dorothy, but that's exactly the point. I think he's right that we don't need another "sugar sweet" version of it. I am interested to see exactly how "twisted" it is.

I actually find it really scary that Hollywood seems to have run out of ideas. I have never seen Hollywood be so remake crazy until now. I can't even begin to name all the damn remakes they've been doing, and most of them are absolutely terrible with only a few exceptions. Fact is, though, that some movies simply don't need to be remade. For example, I VERY much prefer the original Halloween and Day the Earth Stood Still over their remakes. When it comes to the Wizard of Oz though, that's one that really doesn't need to be remade. And if they do, what is this mentality that they have to have edge to it and make it bad-ass? Honestly, when I think Wizard of Oz, I simply don't think bad-ass. The original is so popular and has lasted this long for a reason. Don't fix it if it's not broken.

Actually to all of you who think Oz doesn't need a remake has obviously never read the books, the movie is no where near the source of the books, neither would Mcfarlane's version but that doesn't matter now cause I guess that is what we are getting.

I would love to see a version of Oz that is true to the books source and not all kid friendly kinda like Burton's version of Wonderland. Oz is a pretty twisted tale, it's not all happy frolics down a yellow brick road with singing and dancing, the books are actually pretty creepy. which is why Mcfarlane's version is going to be pretty good, but I doubt that he will pull right from the source he will prob just do his own thing.

If they're gonna remake/reboot/rewhatever Oz, it has to be turned right upside down. The original is so classic, no matter how much CGI goes into a new one, the old will always be better. If they do it, it has to be much darker and "twisted", or not at all. I think McFarlane could do something with it, but we'll see I guess.

Or they could just consense HBO's Oz into a 2 hour movie. That'd sure scare the kiddies! :)
