New Intel On Ishamael Revealed In Latest THE WHEEL OF TIME Season 2 Teaser

Will season 2 of The Wheel of Time be a more authentic adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's high fantasy series? A new teaser provides a ray of optimism.

The first season of Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time led viewers to assume that Fares Fares' mystery figure in black was the Dark One, an ancient malevolent force threatening to destroy the world and remake it in his image.

Those who have read Robert Jordan's fantasy novels were somewhat confused when it wasn't revealed that Fares is playing Ishamael, one of the Dark One's Forsaken - a group of 13 powerful Aes Sedai from Lews Therin's (the first Dragon and the strongest Aes Sedai of all time) time who betrayed the light and joined the dark.

So, is this a case of the TV show playing fast and loose with the source material, or are they aiming to deceive viewers?

In the first trailer for The Wheel of Time's second season, it appeared as if the show was still trying to lead audiences to believe that Fares was playing the Dark One with  Rosamund Pike's Moraine Sedai uttering, "We didn't defeat the Dark One. We set him free.

However, a new teaser trailer has been released which now has Moraine stating, "We didn't defeat the Dark One. We set his strongest lieutenant free."

Perhaps season 2 is attempting to bring the television adaptation closer to the source material?

To find out, we'll have to wait until season 2 begins on Friday, September 1. To celebrate the show's return and reward fans, Amazon Prime Video will release three episodes on that date.

Amazon released new episodes on Sunday during the first season and has yet to officially confirm whether the show is making the switch to Fridays permanently, or if that's simply the day the show will premiere before going back to its Sunday format.

Amazon has already renewed The Wheel of Time for a third season.

The first season naturally covered the first book in the series, The Eye of the World. However, the teasers and trailers released so far for season 2 seemingly indicate that while it is primarily based on the second installment, The Great Hunt, there are some leftover storylines from The Eye of the World that will get resolved along with a few elements from the third book, The Dragon Reborn

I’m done criticizing the show for being wildly book immaculate.

This does look better than season 1, and yet it looks like it may have some of the same issues.

I’ll watch and hope for the best I guess. The Great Hunt is one of the best books in the entire series. Hope it’s done some justice here.

@mountainman - I count 12 people at that table and Ishamael standing by the fire when after season 1, there should only be 11 Forsaken left.

@MarkJulian - The scene could be a gathering of The Forsaken. But according to the statues shown in season 1, it seemed as if the show was going to reduce the number from the books.

I almost think it’s the “Darkfriend social” from the prologue of the second book. Not how I pictured it at all, but wouldn’t be surprised if this is how they depict it.

@MarkJulian - Side note, I just found these AI generated depictions of characters using the book description. Most of these are really cool.

While changes from source are not always bad and sometimes are necessary, it just seems like this series could have been much more epic than what we are getting.

Video 1 - The Heroes

Video 2 - The Forsaken

Also, for the most part I liked most casting. My main issues were set design, costumes, music (liked the eastern influence though) and story.

Just commenting on how the story is far more epic than it has been depicted so far. Maybe they will get better as the show progresses.

Season 1 really sucked. Not sure I can submit myself to another season, even for a hate-watch.

@MrDandy - Man I agree, but I’m going to give season 2 a go to see if the lack of COVID delays, getting their feet under them, or hearing the feedback from fans can help.

Since I’m such a big fan of the books, I’m probably sticking with it, even though so many things bother me. We aren’t likely to get another adaptation for a long time. I liked some things, even some of the changes. But there were definitely a lot of huge problems.

I swear though, if they don’t do some sort of adapting of the “flicker, flicker” scene, I’m going to be so mad one of the best sequences in the entire series didn’t get adapted.

@MrDandy - Oh also, Brandon Sanderson said he was more involved with script feedback for this season than he was for season 1. And he really wasn’t a fan of that first season. That gives me some hope as well.

Everybody: It didn't follow the books and it sucked.
Me: I quit expecting anything to ever be as good and the book so it was enjoyable.

@NGFB - It's interesting how so many people give comic book movies a pass when they are very different from the source material, yet actual novels don't get that same leniency.

I'm a stickler for following the source, and I get upset when even comic book movies don't follow the source, yet even I give them more leniency. I wonder why that is.

@CorndogBurglar - Comics are a bit different as they have decades of source material to pull from. Books are generally isolated to just the words on the page.

Most people, outside the most ardent of fans, don’t mind small changes. Besides the tiny group of people that raged about Tom Bombadil, there wasn’t a huge outrage at The Lord of the Rings trilogy. And there were many minor changes from the books.

The Hunger Games stayed pretty close and was well received. The first four seasons of Game of Thrones only changed little things and most people loved it. The same is true for the first season of House of The Dragon.
