New Line Register Another Possible Title For 3rd HOBBIT Movie

Yesterday we found out two possible titles for Peter Jackson's third Hobbit movie, and now we have another -- one which sounds the most plausible, but may annoy many fans..

As we know, the titles "The Desolation Of Smaug" and "Riddles In The Dark" were registered by Warner Bros. Now TheOneRing.net reveal that a third name can be added top the list..

Riddles In The Dark seems unlikely, as this refers to a scene that occurs -- or at least definitely should occur -- in the first movie. Apparently studios will often register multiple titles to throw people off the scent a bit. Desolation Of Smaug sounds much more promising, but this new one, The Battle Of The Five Armies, is the one my money's on. The battle refers to the final, epic clash in the book, and we expected it would be the finale of the second movie. But if it is indeed the title that will be used for the controversial third film in the series, it means that Jackson does intend to stretch out the main narrative of The Hobbit over the three movies, and not use the third to bridge the gap between that and The Lord Of The Rings -- using elements from the appendices etc -- as most fans had hoped he would.

Of course it may be none of the above. But if it does turn out that this third film will focus on the battle we all thought we'd be seeing in the second, how would that go down with you Tolkien fans?

@AlSimmons the Battle of five armies refers to Wood Elves, Men, Dwarves, Goblins, and the Eagles.

The last film should be titled There and Back again. Have the second film take up the new name.

They sound like video game titles to me.

in Middle Earth, Goblins are the same thing as Orcs. "Orc" is elvish for "goblin."

That is the title I would love to see for the third, make the second Desolation of Smaug.

Make the 3rd movie fill the gap!!!!! Then I'm in all the way. Use the new name whether it is The Battle Of The Five Armies or Desolation Of Smaug (Riddles in the Dark is definitely inappropriate) for the second one and name the 3rd one There and Back Again.

Btw: I'd prefer Desolation Of Smaug. The Battle Of The Five Armies seems too ... I don't find the right word, maybe violent, focussed on war... I don't know the word I'm looking for.

Why is everyone assuming that 'There and Back Again' has to be the title of the second film? If they just suddenly announce a third film then there's no reason why they can't shuffle 'There and Back Again' as the title of the third movie and put 'Battle of Five Armies' in the middle of the trilogy.

if people can't trust Jackson to do the right thing then they should just leave this planet now. He has no reason other than what's best for the story to extend the movies to a trilogy. He's already said that if he didn't then we would miss out on all the extra stuff that's not in the novel. To me that says it's already in the scripts and knowing Del Toro I would even wager on it. I think any of the suggested titles are fine, but I agree that there and back again should be the last films title.
And just so we have some comparrison Tarantinos Kill Bill was one movie when he finished editing but was so long that he knew he'd have to cut it down so instead it was released in two installments. It wasn't for the money it was so the whole story could be told. Jackson and co just want to tell as much of the story to as many people as possible because not everyone buys the extended editions.

In Jackson I trust.

Well I just learned that Tolkien provided a fictional "title page" said to be by Frodo. This page shows some rejected/crossed out titles for the book that contains Bilbo's and Frodos memories. One is "My Unexpected Journey" which as "AN unexpected journey" became the subtitle for the first movie. Another is "There and Back Again" which, as long as there were supposed to be (just) two movies, was meant to be the subtitle of the final/second movie. Another of these rejected titles is "What Happened After". As the newly announced third movie really should be a movie that uses the LotR appendices and maybe the Silmarillon part five and/or some other of Tolkien's notes (maybe from The Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth or some unpublished notes by Tolkien), and Jackson so far did use "Frodo's" title considerations for the movies' subtitles, I think the third movie should be called "The Hobbit: What Happened After". That would be a good (sub)title for a movie that tells the/a story taking place after the events told in the Hobbit (but before LotR); and Tolkien/"Frodo" brought that title up himself as he brought up the other two ones.

Here's my suggestion:

Film all 3 all at once.

Then, release the first one this year. 2 years later, release #2 in May, then #3 the following December, just 7 months later.

If the 3rd installment is needed because #2 is simply too big, then release #2 and #3 in the same year as a multi-release of one long installment ... instead of releasing #2 and #3 a year or two apart.
