One Delay To Rule Them All

One Delay To Rule Them All

Impending delays of The Hobbit are affecting the release of The Lord of the Rings.

According to Cindy [email protected], the recently publicized delays with The Hobbit could adversely affect the Blu-ray DVD release of the theatrical versions of The Lord Of The Rings. The release was meant to coincide with the theatrical release of The Hobbit, now possibly pushed back to 2012.

I had planned to wait on the Blu-ray extended versions of the trilogy. It seems we are made to wait a little longer for either.

meh, Pete already tricked me into buying both the theatrical and extended versions of the dvds, no way I'm buying another set of them. Besides, I really don't see the huge difference in quality between bluray and dvd. It doesn't significantly change the viewing experience.

nah, the quality may be about the same, but it's the special features i'm after.
which the extended cuts have in spades.

I don't see what other extras are left, except exclusive looks at the hobbit. Those extended versions are pretty extensive.

lol who really cares about the theatrical releases anyway? The extended editions FTW all the way.

For my birthday last year I did a LOTR extended edition marathon. I watched the Hobbit cartoon first, and then all three extended edition dvd's back to back. It was fun.

LEEE, it always amazes me the amount of enthusiasm you have.

But do you REALLY Laugh Out Loud as much as you say you do?

And how do the people around you cope with your extreme excitement?

I prefered the books to the movies.

I cant say I'd bother spending the money to but the trilogy on blu-ray...I'd much prefer that the original Star Wars trilogy was released in that format to be honest!

Im not all that excited for The Hobbit either but then I've never really been into LOTR fantasy type stuff!

Oh come on! My HD has a huge hard on for this damned trilogy! Release it already...and here's an idea Pete, why don't you release both versions on 1 bluray disc. There is more than enough space on those huge 50gb discs. Come on man!

Wow! You don't see a difference in quality from dvd to Blu-Ray? Time to get a new tv or a pair of glasses then. The difference in visual quality from 480i to 1080p is huge in my experience. Not just in the detail but also the color reproduction and reduction of video artifacts that came with the mpeg2 codec dvd used. I don't buy dvd's any longer. Nothing but Blu-ray.

Having said that, there's no way I'm buying the trilogy twice, and I really don't care to see the theatrical versions again. I guess I'll just have to wait for the extended versions to come out. One thing I don't want is 4 hours of movie crammed on one Blu-ray disc. They have to increase the compression ratio to make it fit and that reduces the quality. I noticed that with the extended release of the Fellowship. I bought the 2 disc version and my friend bought the single disc version and his looked like crap compared to mine. It makes a BIG difference.

I dont buy any DVD's at all anymore - I'm happy to pay extra because the difference in quality between DVD and blu-ray is massive IMO!

@niknik. I completely agree! For those who have HD tv's, they know how much better real 1080p is. This will be one of the best Bluray releases of all time.

I love those combo packs. That really should be the standard. It will actually improve Bluray sales if you think about it. People will already have the Blurays from the combo packs, making a Bluray player purchase all the more worth it.

Sorry to be the bitchy straight guy! but i cant stand people that knock stuff and probably dont even know what there talking about, thwhtGuardian and Wadey09, im not knocking DVDs quality but if you have a HDMI lead a HD tv and a Bluray player im afraid the quality is far superior to DVD. Sure I hate having to replenish my collection with a new format but it is what it is..... Lord of the Rings on Bluray mixed with a little bit of the old surround sound will be off the [frick]in chain, im in no rush tho, business is business and its viable fo newline to release there sets to coincide with the new release of a Tolken movie, nuff said, Jaymaster out!

Though Blu-ray movies are pricey, I still can watch them at my leisure without breaking my wallet (I subscribe to Netflix). I'm sold on HD and Blu Ray.

It took awhile for me to jump on to new technology. I'm always 2 years or so late to the party, but I like to see how technology pans out first before I dish out cash. Look who won the HD war so far between HDDVD and Blu-Ray....

People need to see the light of HD. It is a HUGE difference.

Right now this stuff is getting affordable. I got a 52" Sony Bravia LCD for $1600 in May of '09, on credit, no interest till 2011.

I recently got a used backwards compatible Ps3 for under $300.

Netflix for about $13 a month.

People need to see the light of HD entertainment!!

I have an HD Tv and I have a few blu ray dvds that I play on my ps3... and while there is a little difference in color it's not enough to effect the viewing pleasure in the least. It's like the argument over whether luxury cars drive better than my honda, it's mostly about status not actual quality.

Luvii38, you do know that you are allowed to enjoy other things AS WELL AS Star Wars right?

I have em all on special edition dvd..and i don't have a blue ray player..so yeah, wont be buyin them.

Darth, im exactly the same, i cant actually watch the theaterical cuts anymore..even if they are on tv and there is nothing else on, I miss all the awesome bits from the special editions.

Jebus Mulder!

That had to take the whole day! I did a rings extended marathon once, and that shit took like 14 hours with a small break for bathroom and refills in between. Well worth it I would admit, but damn I couldn't imagine throwing the Hobbit in there too. Kudos to you my man!

I agree with everyone on the theatrical versions. I couldn't go back to watching them anymore, the extended versions add tons to the movies.

Darth - You're not the only one, I like to watch the extended LOTR trilogy marathon-style during a day over the holidays. :)

Do it every year.

I love the extended versions. Just one thing with these types of movies. they need more Magic in them thou. LOTr is great but more magic is needed.

@ Runeyfist: Good fun isn't it?

@ Ror: Exactly! There is so much good stuff that got edited out. I mean it was even good editing but the point is that those good bits you weere refering to just make a huge difference

@ Billy: Thank you kindly good sir, and Kudos to you too! LOTR is so the bomb. Yeah it's a tough stretch alright but like you said SOOO worth it.
