Rick Riordan's incredibly popular Percy Jackson book series was previously adapted for the big screen, but after two movies - Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief in 2010 and 2013's Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - underperformed (by studio tentpole standards, at least) at the box office, the franchise was scrapped.

Percy and his demigod pals will soon be given a new lease of life on Disney+, with a serialized take on the fantasy adventure novels set to premiere on the streaming service this December, and Riordan is confident that fans will be very happy with this re-adaptation of his work.

"We have been involved in the series since its inception, since the very, very earliest conversations about what a new Percy adaptation might look like, how it would be sketched out, whether it would be episodic," the writer told EW (via SFFGazette.com) in an interview. conducted prior to the start of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. "So, I feel comfortable telling fans of the books who have been waiting — in some cases, decades — for this kind of faithful adaptation, that this is the one you've been waiting for. We are involved and I think you're gonna love it."

The show may be sticking as close to the books as possible when it comes to the overall plot, but some changes have been made to the characters in order to present a story that is "more representative of the real world."

"I'm playing a character that is a different person, different hair color, different skin tones, and all that. That's what the prototype was," says Leah Jeffries, whose character Annabeth Chase is described as a blond white girl in the books. "Just to hear that I'm playing her different was like, 'Wow, I'm now gonna be an inspiration to other girls.'"

We're still waiting on a full trailer, but check out a motion poster, some new promo stills, and the previously-released teaser below, and let us know if you're looking forward to this new take on Percy Jackson in the comments section.

“Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.”

The show stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, a young demigod; Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena who has been training at Camp Half-Blood for five years; and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, Percy's best friend and a satyr who is disguised as a 12-year-old boy.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 20.

Never was into the books as they were too YA for me, but I do enjoy stories of mythology. Wife likes the books so I’m sure I’ll check this out and hope it’s not atrocious like most fantasy adaptations these days.

So did the guy who wrote Artemis Fowl. It sucked so much, it was more profitable to write it off than keep it on Disney+. Now you can't even watch it.

I wonder if people are watching these fantasy YA tv shows? The studios are putting a lot of money into these YA shows but I personally don't see or hear much buzz or hype on them. I read alot of articles that Shadow and Bone and Sweet Tooth are doing great but no 1 talks about them.

Euphoria and Stranger Things are huge success but they aren't "fantasy" YA shows.

So 2 bad Shazam.... oops.. Percy Jackson movies, & their great idea is to turn something bad into a D+ show.

The smell of failure is strong with this one Obi Wan.

About authenticity: They already changed Annabeth. She had two visual discriptors: blond hair, grey eyes. Gee, I wonder why that had to go. And no, I REALLY don't enjoy focusing on these things. But I can't pretend to not notice. Or to not know what obviously lead to the change.

Still looking forward to this show, but this shit annoys me more and more.

How come both versions aren't keeping Percy's father a secret?

That was a big reveal in the books. People knew his father was one of the big 3 but the assumption was that Zeus was his father due to how many children he has.

The actor was really good in the Adam Project and the author was apparently heavily involved in this version. Hopefully it turns out good. The books were entertaining kids novels worthy of a solid adaptation.

It’s been a long while since I have seen the movies , might revisit them in the near future just to have a concrete opinion.

Anyway , hope this turns out well!!.

Say what you like but I think this is a contradiction. You can’t say “we’re a faithful adaptation” and also say “we’re completely different” in the same interview - you have to pick one
