It seems that reports of Ron Howard's adap of The Dark Tower being in trouble may have been premature. The director gives an update to Entertainment Weekly, revealing that although progress has been delayed, things are still on track. He also says that Javier Bardem is not locked in to play the story's main chararter Roland but has shown interest..

“We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward,” Howard said. “We’re thinking of starting in early spring now. I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.”

This would be a major undertaking for Howard, and a first of it's kind for Hollywood too. As King's opus would be adapted into not only a movie trilogy, but a tv series linking each movie installment...

“There are elements of the Dark Tower saga that are more personal and can be best dealt with on television, TV allows you to roll out details of the characters in a more methodical way.”

Lets hope this finally gets underway. What about The Gunslinger? Now that Bardem isn't a lock is there any other actor you guys feel would be better suited to the role?

Tom Jane.

Easily Viggo or Thomas Jane. I think we have had at least three polls on this.

Actually, I would prefer either of them to Javier, even though he is a great actor. Viggo looks the part hands down.

Viggo or Jane work great for me.

i agree w/ Rothwilder, Bardem can act, but he's not Really roland deschain Material.
IMO

im sum ones article i read a week or so back had an interview w/a guy who played a frost giant in Thor.

in the interview he showed interest in playing the gun slinger, if they where gonna go w/an unknown-ish actor.
that could be an option.

plus i'm pretty sure Homeboy looked the part, from the pic in the article.

Viggo Mortensen or Christian Bale would work. Although Viggo is Aragorn and Christian is Batman... the studio might not want that. Moreover Bale is likely to be an expensive choice.

Bardem is a good actor but I don't know ... maybe not as intense as those two I mentioned?

Guys Roland is old... Bale wouldn't work. I like Ed Harris maybe. Although javier would be sweet too...

I know i'm speaking out of place here since i've never read King's Dark Tower series, but i've glanced at the comics and book covers and as much as i love Viggo, the character seems to require a certain amount of grit. Personally, i've always seen Viggo as this shining jewel that always seems so clean cut no matter how much you dirty him up. Christ, he practically outshined the elves in LOTR, even with that stubble and hood on. Remember the first scene we saw him in(LOTR), he pierced through that dark lit room like he was the freakin' Sun! If Hollywood was planning on remaking Jesus of Nazareth, he'd be the one i'd pick no matter who was in the running!(I know, it's ironic that he actually played Satan before LOL Which i felt he stood out yet again BTW) Now Tom Jane on the other hand, he's got grit up the ass and out the mouth! He also has that silent western acting method down to a science. And since he doesn't have Viggo's resume and attention, he would surely cost a lot less, especially to keep him on board for further films AND an interwoven TV series.

A little outside the box thinking...

Zach Quinto

Adrian Brody

Guy Pearce

Hope they get it made!

If Javier doesnt take the lead role! Viggo Mortensen, James Caviezel, Thomas Jane or Mike Fassbender all the way!

Ron Howard? Oh come on. There wasn't another famous director with some actual talent they could hire for this franchise? I really don't understand why Ron Howard is still allowed to make movies.

Viggo or Bale, Viggo certainly looks almost exactly the way i envision Roland of Gilead, but i feel like Bale has better acting chops, I've seen almost all of his movies and I have a feeling that he could pull off any role given to him, not to mention that he'd be out of his element which means (if Heath Ledger has taught us anything) that he'll have to try even harder and could possibly be Roland Deschain in the same way that Hugh Jackman IS wolverine

But if he isn't chosen to play the Gunslinger, he would make an excellent Eddie Dean (although BJ Novak looks the part to me, the only problem is that he can't act)

Dakota Goyo would make a good Jake Chambers, although there are no other actors immediately brought to mind that seem that way, and he could be a dreadful miscast

Viggo Mortensen he was BORN to play this role... Well actually Clint Eastwood was and King actually was heavily influenced by Eastwoods Westerns to bad they didnt do this years ago. Viggo is definalelty the next best out of the bunch!

I really wish, since they ARE moving forward with The Dark Tower, that someone would FINALLY adapt "The Talisman"! One of my ALL TIME favorite King novels! I had heard at one time that Spielberg now owns the rights to that and supposedly it was going to be adapted into an HBO or Showtime miniseries, but, to date, have yet to hear anything else about it.

Oh, and my picks for Roland? Bale, Viggo or Jane. Either of the three, makes no difference. So long as it's not Javier. I've read the comics and the novels, and still just don't see him as Roland. But, he could prove to be an excellent choice. Time will tell.

PLEASE NO!, Do not hurry production on this show. This is a complicated series and a huge undertaking. Please for the love of all that is pure and precious, take the time to get this right. I don't think I'm out of line when I say most of Kings stories get butchered when made into movies and TV series ie; Thinner, The Stand, IT!,The langoliers and others. Not to say that they are all bad, they just rarely do the books justice. If this production (movies/TV series) works out well we should see this type of story telling more often. So please Mr. Howard, take the time you need to give this the justice it deserves, I'll be patient if you promise to blow my mind. -Thankee Sai.

Still waiting for the HBO mini series of Under the Dome, Can someone get on this already.

I always thought that Timothy Olyphant could do Roland Justice. with a little movie magic they could age him for the older Roland. I think Timothy has that quiet menacing, man of few words acting style down. Roland is a simply stated guy, and if you know Timothy from Deadwood, I think him and Roland have some simalaraties.I also think that getting the supporting cast (Jake,Eddie and Susanna) right is just as important seeing how they will be a huge part of this series as well. T.O. could also play Eddie .

Guy Pearce all the way. He deserves a big part like this. He is one of my favorite actors. Loved him in Memento and The Proposition!!

I like the idea of Viggo but Guy Pearce can do that whole lost in thought and mentally somewhere else while still payign attention to the situation thing which is how I always pictured Roland. When I read the books I always saw Clint Eastwood. He would have been perfect back int the day.
