We all know Zach Snyder can direct but can he write?

This will be a short and sweet review which I will leave spoiler free. I went into Sucker Punch knowing to expect a visually amazing film with a great soundtrack - that has been consistent with every Snyder film thus far. However, he has always done a film version of someone else's work. A story that already existed, characters and plot and dialog that was high caliber (300, Watchmen, etc.) This time around he wrote the script and screenplay. From the previews I gathered that it was like Alice In Wonderland - only instead of a girl imagining the Mad Hatter, talking flowers and a maniacal queen to escape her stuffy British life, you have instead an American girl in an institution who imagines fighting Samurai and Steampunk Nazi's. Fair enough, neither concept makes too much sense, you just have to accept that these girls have some bizarre imaginations. But Sucker Punch went wrong. I didn't care about the characters. The fantasies didn't make any sense and as an audience you were acutely aware when she was imagining, unlike in Alice where you think this girl is really in trouble. So during the imagination sequences I found myself going "ooh aaaah" but not really caring because there was no danger, this was all in her head. The dialog was sparse, it could have just been one long music video, and the dialog that was there needed help. Zach should have had Tarentino come in and help him out with the script - there's a fellow who knows how to have kick ass heroine's that you care about - with a coherent story. I still think Superman will be great because it will be a Nolan script. I think Zach should stick to directing other people's scripts.
