The Dark Tower Film Adaptation Put On Hold

The Dark Tower Film Adaptation Put On Hold

According to Deadline, Universal is so concerned about the potential cost of the Ron Howard adaptaiton of Stephen King's The Dark Tower that pre-production on the proposed trilogy and 12 episodes of a TV series all starring Javier Bardem has been put on hold.

Points out the site, "One thing for sure, even though staffers have been told there's a chance they will return, the plan to start production in September is scratched. If Universal decides the proposition is too rich for its blood -- it recently halted At the Mountains of Madness because it was an R-rated $150 million film -- then the next move would be to bring it to Warner Bros, where Goldsman's Weed Road has its deal."

Why am I not surprised?

This project seemed like a bad idea from the get go. Ron Howard is...a mediocre director, at best. Making several TV series to fill the gap between movies? And how would they be able to market something like this well enough to actually make the amount of money they spent back? It is too farfetched and Universal should keep this on hold for atleast another 5 years, until they acquire sufficient funds to just poor in this financial tarpit of a franchise

RON HOWARD IS NOT A MEDIOCRE DIRECTOR, HE'S A GREAT DIRECTOR! this is sad...forget the series..just trim the fat from the screenplay and make the movie...take a risk universal!!! newline did with Lord of the Rings and look how that turned out!

@fullmetal He is incredibly mediocre. Apollo 13 was good because of the performances and the writing. Howard almost botched the entire film with his heavy handedness.

I have to agree with Illuminatus on this one, at least in terms of Ron Howard's skill as a director. He has movies I like, but rarely because of his "vision".

@ Illuminatus...what about Frost/Nixon? A BEAUTIFUL MIND!!!!!!!!!!! he won best director! i hope you're not one of those guys that criticizes the director for not liking the story to a film...do most people even know what a director does? there's a myth that's been generated by the net, if people don't like the story or dialogue to a film, they blame the director...LOL..ignorant people...i love them...they make me look better...but to each his own

Praise Jeebus! Now... Re-cast Roland!

Roland- Josh Holloway
Eddie- James Franco
Susannah- Naomie Harris
Walter/The Man in Black- Alan Cumming
Jake- uh, a good child actor?
Alice- Marg Helgenberger
Brown- Eric Stoltz
Sheb- Zach Galifianakis
Nort- Matt Frewer
Balazar- James Gandolfini
Andolini- Ron Perlman
Henry Dean- Brian Van Holt
Steven Deschain- Kurt Russell
Cort- Vinnie Jones

...for starters, anyway. Anyone have better ideas?

MrFlo,

SPOT on with almost your entire cast! Sawyer as Roland is perfect, as are Russell and Harris. For Cort, I may also suggest Sam Sheppard for the "old hardass" version. The only one I would want changed is Franco. I know he would make a great Eddie, but there's something about him that does not feel quite right to me. Maybe something more a little unknown. I really dig James Badge Dale from The Pacific, think he might make a good Eddie...

Thanks, sentinel. I actually was gonna write either dave franco (james' younger brother) or aaron paul for eddie. I like a british badass as cort, myself; just seems like it would fit right in with the whole fair day riddle stuff.

Oh, and cathy bates as sylvia pittson? And how about jim carrey as the voice of blaine? I know... But he could do the serious, grave voice as well as the impressions/craziness and little blaine. Or am I way off?

After a 5 minute conversation with my brother, Chris, I realized I dropped the ball on the casting of Eddie and Jake.

Eddie- Ben Foster
Jake- Freddie Highmore

Ben Foster was also my pick for Eddie, so good call there but, Holloway as Roland is an epic fail, bro…
Javier will do great when this finally goes down.

Terribly disappointed in the stall.
