Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller's next project, fantasy romance Three Thousand Years of Longing, is set to premiere during the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release this August, and we have a first look at some footage via a brief teaser.

We still don't know very much about Miller's adaptation of A.S. Byatt's short story, The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye, but if stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton aren't a big enough draw, take a look at these stunning shots.

The filmmaker recently described Three Thousand Years of Longing as the “opposite” of his acclaimed Fury Road, and it's not difficult to understand why. The story follows a scholar (Swinton) on a trip to a speaking engagement in Istanbul who inadvertently summons a Djinn (Elba). The genie-like entity then details his long journey through fantasy and history as he endeavors to tempt this scholar — who claims she wants for nothing — to make her three wishes.

"When I say it’s the anti-Mad Max, I mean it only in the sense that it’s got way more dialogue than the very laconic Fury Road," said Miller during a recent interview with Deadline. "Most of that was shot on location in the deserts of Southern Africa. This one was shot basically indoors, with only a couple of outdoor scenes. Its scale is smaller, at least in terms of its physical scale, even though, yes, it is set over 3,000 years. But also, Fury Road was a story that essentially happened over three days and two nights, and this happened over 3,000 years, so that’s what I meant by the anti-Mad Max."

The full trailer will be online this Friday, so be sure to check back then.

The teaser doesn't really do it for me, but the premise and how Miller describes does make it sound really intriguing

Hopefully the full trailer to be released tomorrow will give a better indication of what the movie is all about. The actors involved as well as George Miller himself already has me intrigued though.

Random thought... George Miller would be a good choice for a Ghost Rider movie. Have Johnny Blaze riding through different locations, helping people and killing demons. Basically Mad Max with demons. Not gonna happen, but would be cool.

I actually love this kind of teaser. Visually interesting enough for me to get interested but not spoiling a single thing about the plot.

Goddamn Jesus!!!!

It's only a 20 second teaser to the trailer tomorrow and I'm already hooked on it.

George Miller can do whatever the [frick] he wants at this point.

This could be Happy Feet 3 and I'd be excited about it.

@demery - Ha...same. Fury Road is a masterpiece.

@RorMachine - It is and I'm excited for this one.

I'm sure it won't be as good as Mad Max: Fury Road (MM: FR is my favorite film of all time), but that's a pretty unrealistic bar to set yourself up for. It's still George Miller looking like he's taking whatever he learned from Fury Road into making an epic and sexy period peace/fantasy/romance.

@Shivermetimbers - Only if the director of Fury Road directed 300: Rise of an Empire.
