Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance's "Blackout" Not Based On Comic Book Version!

Talking to MTV Splash Page, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have revealed just how much they took from the comic books when it came to the big screen version of Blackout, and it turns out that it wasn't much at all! They also comment on Ciaran Hinds as the Devil (replacing Peter Fonda from the first critically panned movie) and you can find the video - once again only available in the US - as well as a transcript, below.

"We didn't really honestly do a lot of research into the comic book version of Blackout. We kind of just took the visual of him and went from there. The Devil kind of created the Ghost Rider, but he also created Blackout, so if the Ghost Rider is the result of a demon possessing someone, then Blackout probably is too. He's just as powerful in his own way. We didn't really explore who that demon was or get into the backstory or the mythology of the villain but in our heads we looked at him as a foil to Ghost Rider."

"A guy like Ciaran Hinds, you think gravity, weight. He is intimidating when he walks on set. He's so powerful, he's incredible classically trained actor. His gravity is sort of what holds this thing in place, and that's sort of what is the balance of 'Ghost Rider.'"

STARRING:

Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider
Johnny Whitworth as Blackout
Ciarán Hinds as The Devil
Violante Placido as Nadya
Idris Elba as Moreau

RELEASE DATE: February 17th, 2012.

Yea - they mentioned a few days back that they had added a few powers and all they had really kept was the name. Nice find!

Duh...... You are making a multi million dollar potential franchise. Take one [frick]ing day to read the wikipedia articles on the characters at least.

I am never too fussed what they do in the movies, things will always have to change. I tend to look a comic book movies as being 'inspired by' rather than 'based on'...

welp there goes the little hope I had for this movie!

saying you didn't do any research on the movie you're making isn't gonna win you any fans, especially comic book readers.

I don't get it. Wasn't Mephisto the one Blaze sold his soul to, not the actual Devil?

"We didn't really honestly do a lot of research into the comic book version of Blackout."

Yes don't do research, especially if your directing a comic book movie, lol. Movie still looks pretty good. Better than the first one.

Who cares if its not 100% faithful to the comic as long as its a good movie thats all that should matter and hopefully much better than the first.

I'm not really surprised. It's going to be a god awful movie anyways. thinking about it makes me cringe. And yeah AsgardianGangsta it was Mephisto, who was posing as the devil. funny thing is that he didn't create Ghost Rider at all, Dormammu did. Mephisto just gave Blaze the power.

thats always a good sign when the directors don't research the character.

Im not surprised but that is [frick]ing retarded.

Why bother even checking the wikipedia page like KevinVonDoom said? It takes all of what 5 minutes to read a few paragraphs?

You're making a movie based off of a comic book, how about you actually read the [frick]ing book!

This is one of the many reasons why I like Zach Snyder for example, he ACTUALLY reads the comics that he is adapting and makes the actors read them as well

lol These guys are abusing their audience with this turd. First they film this thing with a WALMART camera, give them a fire-pissing Ghost Rider, then say "Nah, we didn't do any research and [frick] a background story".

{Sigh} There's not keeping true to the source material, then there's not even bothering to read anything about the source material!

They clearly didn't learn a thing from the first attempt. As if that wasn't obvious with their keeping Cage and making this a sequel, not a reboot.

I give my final judgement when i see the movie but seriously the action is looking sick but i think it will fail in the story. Too much change.

I want my Mephisto! Who is more like a demon and the actual devil!
Seriously who would you rather see as the main villain? The devil in the humanform or the actual comic villain who looks like this!
Mephisto would look badass in the big screen!

Blackout changes i dont mind as long as they are not anything too far a way from the original character.

Why are the directors and producers so lazy???

rbfn04 - 10/28/2011, 5:46 AM
Because, why do research? As long as you make it bad ass and edgy most people will eat it up.

Honestly, I don't know why make a movie based on a character if you're not going to follow his story...

Hey remember in batman begins how henri ducard turned out to be ra's al ghul? pretty sure it wasn't that way in the comics. and remember in the dark knight when the joker cut his face into a smile instead of falling into chemical filled waters? pretty sure that wasn't in the comics either. or how peter parker used web shooters in the comics, not his wrists? this just demonstrates the hypocrisy of fanboys. Some of the greatest comic book movies take liberties with the characters. this is no exception. they got the look and general gist of the character. they just made him cooler.

Isn't it only the job of a director to worry about how the film looks? They shouldn't have to worry about anything else concerning Blackout. They're not the ones who wrote the script and how well the character fits would probably be more influenced by the actor, who could have easily done more research. On top of that, say what you will about Nic Cage not looking like Blaze and what you think of his acting, he probably understands what makes Blackout work for the fans better than everyone else put together making this film, 'cause he's been a fan himself as long as any of us, and I'm pretty sure he has the knowledge (and experience) to at least know what the fans wouldn't appreciate. There are those of us who might wish for better, but last I looked, this is still the real world I can't imagine how this movie could have been in better hands. I just hope those most worried about how Blackout will be handled aren't the same ones who complained most about the first director, especially if that mean't they got exactly what they asked for now.
