SNAKE EYES Early Reactions Declare The Film An "Unmitigated Disaster" And "Devoid Of Energy"

Paramount Pictures waited until the last minute before allowing critics to share their thoughts on Snake Eyes, and if these first reactions are any indication, there's actually a good reason for the delay!

With Snake Eyes just days away from arriving in theaters, the review embargo has lifted and the response has been a mostly negative one thus far.

It seems some critics were surprised that it wasn't as bad as they expected, but that's hardly a glowing verdict, and one longtime fan and reporter goes so far as to say this "unmitigated disaster" ended up "[breaking] my heart." Only a handful of reviews have surfaced, though most are either middle-of-the-road or negative based on what we've seen from those outlets.

Initial social media reactions are almost always universally positive, so the sheer number of criticisms here is a surprise. There are definitely those who liked the film, but if it fails to slice down the competition at the box office this weekend, then the G.I. Joe franchise will likely be shelved all over again.

The last film in the series was 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation, so it's taken this long for Paramount to bring the series back to the big screen. Unfortunately, Snake Eyes wasn't welcomed by fans when it was announced as it was clear from day one that major liberties were being taken with the title character.

I'm m surprised at it having badly shot action.
Especially since it has Iko Uwais and Andrew Koji, who have starred in movies/shows that have clearly and excitingly shown them showcase their fighting moves
Genuinely thought we were leaving shaky cam behind

Shame. Going from these quotes alone, it sounds low-tier mediocre at best. Completely terrible at worst.

In my opinion, I'm not sure Snake Eyes should ever have an origin story. And I don't feel like ANY character should have one without at least one or two good GI Joe movies first.

They should have rebooted GI Joe as a whole and focused on making that really good. Then focus on individual character movies.

Henry Golding was terribly miscast. They should've made Koji Snake Eyes.

Wait, bad early social media reactions?

bkmeijer2 - 7/22/2021, 4:27 AM
@Moriakum - yeah, I'm confused too. Maybe early reactions are just hyperbolic in general, so when it's good it's ''the greatest ever'' and when it's bad ''it's a disaster''.

I think I'm wrong and it is really bad, but this remains something we seldom see

@Moriakum - It might be good because you know how it normally goes with Social Media.

@grif - Serious why does everyone need a transforming helmet in movies, it literally so easy and takes 2 seconds to put on a helmet yet everyone needs some helmet that manifests itself out of thin air for some reason. the technology doesnt even make sense.

Not really suprised, but interesting to read that a critic found Rise of Cobra better than this and Retalliation.

Another non starter for GI Joe. Hopefully Old get's better reviews, genuiunly more interested in that this weekend.

@Jaykay21 - I feel like retaliation was head and shoulders above Rise of Cobra. Rise of Cobra was abysmal. Retaliation was decent.

Conquistador - 7/22/2021, 5:23 AM
@suitekid - Agreed. the ensemble was good in Rise, but the horrible CGI, cobra commander and other villains just dragged it all down. Retaliation was a better film, and did more with less if that makes sense.

@Jaykay21 - I'm not at all surprised that someone found Rise of Cobra to be better than Retaliation. Bland movie, no energy to it what so ever, bad action, an uninteresting.

I'm not die hard Joe fan or anything but, at least Rise of Cobra was dumb fun with likable characters.

Also... I haven't on this site in years and my name here is just absolute cringe. You can tell I was a teenager when I originally joined 😂😂😂😭😭😭

@EdgyOutsider - I quite liked the Snake eyes and Storm shadow stuff from Retaliation. Storywise and action, and they didn't put a mouth impression on his suit. that was horrible, but yeah it did lack some energy compared to Rise.

@Jaykay21 - Yeah... I was a dumb teenager. I didn't get the hate for the Snake Eyes suit at the time. It looks and feels so rubbery and the lips were not a good design choice at all haha

Snake Eyes definitely saw in upgrade in the suit department in Retaliation. I didn't like that dynamic in Retaliation because, if memory serves, Storm Shadow felt completely inept and like a joke. Rise gave that relationship more respect even if it was a bit melodramatic.

@EdgyOutsider - yeah the dynamic was a bit different, but I'm not overly familiar with the lore, but I liked the stuff with Jinx and Blind master, though RZA is hit and miss.

1st suit was horrible, looked like a reject power rangers.

Not surprising at all, I just got a pre roll ad on youtube and all of the "critical praise" was just talking about "it has good action" when that's the only thing you can say in your tv spots for your movie you know it's awful .
