Greg Berlanti Talks THE FLASH/ARROW Spin-Off; Promises We'll See A Big DC Villain
With Arrow and The Flash both making their much-anticipated returns this week, more talk has begun about the confirmed DC Comics spin-off. In a recent interview, head writer Greg Berlanti expressed his excitement, and teased which heroes and villains may be coming our way...
Ahead of returns for both The Flash and Arrow this week, Greg Berlanti recently sat down with Variety to discuss the CW franchise's much-talked about mystery spin-off. When asked to outline the series' tone, Berlanti claimed the show would be “most similar to [the] crossover episodes, where you feel that ‘event-iness,’ but all the time.” Comparing The Flash and Arrow to old Westerns full of 'lone gunmen', Berlanti revealed the spin-off would have more of an emphasis on crossing-over elements. "This one is very much an ode to things like ‘The Magnificent Seven’ or those great heist pics like ‘Ocean’s Eleven’," he said, "where you get all of those colors at the same time, and a true ensemble".
Berlanti also teased a few of the new faces joining the CW superhero universe. So far, it's been confirmed that three new DC Comics characters will be appearing in the show. Discussing the thought process behind their selection, Berlanti expressed excitement for one new character in particular: "I think it’s really important that we have another female hero on the show, and this one is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to find out — we just have to cast it right.". Concluding the interview, the writer and showrunner also teased the arrival of a "distinct" new DC Comics villain, claiming it will be "another big character who hasn’t been used yet.”
After following in the footsteps of the Reverse-Flash, Ra's Al Ghul and Deathstroke, this villain is going to have to be something special! Who do you think it will be? With Atom, Black Canary (Sara), Captain Cold and one-half of Firestorm already confirmed to star in the show, they'll have plenty of rogues galleries to choose from!
