$150,000 Greenbacks for Green Lantern Movie

A good start for Green Lantern! Reports say Warner Bros is giving their Green Lantern movie a $150,000 dollar budget--bout right for an epic space saga.

The script detailed some sweet super battles both on Earth and in space--guaranteeing some major SFX to bring it to light.

The Hollywood Reporter says this budget is about what Warners spent on Watchmen...

SYDNEY -- Warner Bros. and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, "Green Lantern," will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film will create about 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia.

"Green Lantern" should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government's 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox. New South Wales outbid interstate rivals Victoria and Queensland for the work.

"The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results," Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

The project is the latest film also to be attracted by the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

"Green Lantern" is the third Warner Bros.-backed feature being made in New South Wales. "Happy Feet 2" is in development there, and "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" is in production by Animal Logic.

Preproduction on "Green Lantern" is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010.

Ha ha. Thought this was a joke with that title! Thought we might be in for a Thunderbirds style Green Lantern but without the strings, that'll push it out of budget!

With the real figure though - awesome! It might pay for big names like Effron and Nic Cage to star! lol.

HEY Howlett04! Slow down man!. i agree with you completely, this amount of money can even hire President Obama for a John Stuart cameo!,

BUT JUST DON´T SPREAD THE WORD SO FAST.. cause the A List actors´s agents are rreading.... and now, they will ask for more money!

The money is supposed to be for the SFX and the Sets, right?..

...because if that is the SAME amount as in Watchmen, i mean, that movie DIDN´T HAVE very well known actors.. so if they are gonna spend like, 50 MILLION dlls only in sallaries.. then yes, we´ll see freaking Nic Cage as Hal...but working with GL Corps puppets!! LOL!! ;-]

I'm hoping this movie does well. But how can people be saying it's gonna be "epic" We don't know anything yet. I mean we know it's gonna be film in Australia & have a 150 mill budget. That's nothing. Superman returns was filmed in Australia & had a 250 mill budget and look how much of a train wreck that was. I just think people should wait before assuming it's gonna be good... or epic.

They're only putting up $150,000? Are they talking a PIXAR spin on Green Lantern? That's barely enough for the production crew and maybe ONE Hollywood Movie Star! WTF!

Green Lantern: The One-Man Improve Film! He has a mitten hand-puppet for Sinestro! With music by Randy Newman!

I'm gonna have ta kick someone's @$$, aren't I?! >:P

ya know not for nuthin in this economic climate and the unemployment rate being so
high. you woukld think that movie studios would at least try to film these new big budget films in the states and give some people some work. but no lets take 150m budget and take it to sydney and give all that stage hand, electrical, extras, carpentry, and all the other manual labor work that could be given to us, so wb can get a 15% location discount. when it comes down to it, it is really shitty. but like lemmings we'll all go running to see this movie because its not our problem and what are we going to do about it any way. Am I the only person who thinks like this or do the rest of you agree with me

Well last i checked this movie wasn't made by the gouvernment of the united states. These production companies are hardly responsible for a country's enconomy. They're only responsible for they're company's economy. And if the US wants to make more money, what they could do for starters is stop endorsing companies that produce CRAP like Dodge/chrysler and GM and maybe even sell they're own oil that's just sitting there. And if they want big companies to produce major box office films on their own turf, then all they need to do is CHARGE LESS!!! Why do US companies have factories in third world contries??? CAUSE IT'S CHEAPER!!! Why do movie companies film outside THEIR own country??? Cause their own country is selfishly EXPENSIVE!!!

All of a sudden they concider themselves "victims"...riiiiiight.

There are a lot of reasons why a production company might choose to produce a film in a location like Australia over the U.S. They need the right people either to already be there or who can be brought in. Cost is the primary issue . . . $150 Mil will go a lot farther in Australia than in the U.S., in part because of all the Union costs. Another factor might be that a production like GL will need to take over studios longer than more conventional movies, and the U.S. studios may not be available. (That is part of the reason that all the Star Wars films were partially made in England.) Without a lot more information, you don't know whether the choice was purely for economic reasons or for logistical ones.

when it all comes down to it shaman is rght it is about all about being cheaper its something called greed. JUst because something s cheaper doesnt make it better. i can go on amazon and buy the new wolverng omnibus for 69.00 but when go to the comcbook store its 90 bucks guess what m gong to the comc book store. why cause if i dont, where wont be a comic book store in a few years. same goes or the movies is they dont help the economy wth jobs no one will have money to see their moves and most of the box offce somes from the domestic gross at 150mil 15 mil people have to see to break even and theat in the states where a ticket s lke 10 bucks. at least it is n ny actuall i think its 11 bucks now. does Australia even have 15 mil people in it
