DAY 1

Here's a brief conversation I had with a production assistant for Warner Bros' superhero film Green Lantern:

Did you hear about the rumor that Ryan [Reynold's] costume is going to be all CGI?

"Who said it's a rumor, it's how they always planned it."

Always? Ryan said he tried the suit on and it felt snug. What was that about then?

"I don't know, I'm sure they had him try something on the see how the colors worked but from the [beginning of filming] it was always going to be a CG costume. I haven't seen any of those costumes in the warehouse but they could have 'em locked up somewhere else."

Is that how they're going to do all the other character costumes?

"The aliens? From what I know they're going to be all CG. I don't even think they have the voice actors picked out yet but it's still really early. We only started filming a month ago and stuff changes here every day."

So... where do they keep all the costumes anyway?

"It's like a few blocks away from the studio. The place is huge, look:"

I had hoped for a legit GL suit, not CGI. I hope they aren't going to pull some crap and have the suit be like glowing energy.

Hal Jordan drinks a beer and cheats on his wife! Er...what I meant to say was: Cool stuff. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE N.O. I'm just wondering if it's going to be the city from the comics (forget it's name) or is it going to be actually taking place in N.O.? I lived there off and on for 5 years and got to see BIG chunks of Primary Colors filmed and was actually an extra in some John Grisham movie, forget what it was called but got to meet Dustin Hoffman, pa's and other production people are always very cool to talk to/drink with. Poni: While on Burbon St. make sure to head to Howl at the Moon and The Cat's Meow...fun bars! Good luck and have fun!

I don't mind if the aliens were CGI done by ILM or WETA. But since the movie is using Sony Imageworks, I'm a little worried.

They've done some decent work but they've been inconsistent with their CGI.

My friend is worried the costume will look like a Tron uniform. lol.

I don't really think an all-CGI suit is necessary, but as long as it looks good then I guess it's cool. Great scoop Multi.

Imma go out on a limb and say that when the film opens, and everyone sees how cool the CGI suits look, we'll all be saying "I knew it would look awesome all along, never had a doubt!"
:D

Great find Poni, Hope your have a good time in New Orleans.

mcgee@ I'm worried about the same thing, they should have used alien costumes with a little cgi or used a different cgi company that has a better track record.

I'm a bit skeptical about the idea of a CGI suit. Seems a bit lazy and unnecesary.

Ah well. An A-list DC hero that isn't Batman or Superman is finally getting his own movie. That's more than enough to be estatic about

statechamp00
statechamp00 - 4/14/2010, 9:02 PM
I have had very low expectations for this movie since I heard they were casting Ryan Reynolds...
I hope GL doesn't lean on CGI like a crutch when really it should be more focused on the awesome story/characters/action.
I realize that doing space sequences and things will require CG, but CG costumes?
I'm not sure how the movie will turn out, and I will watch it, but I haven't heard anything to make me believe this film will be great.

STFU! STFU! cool, like tron cool.
Anthony3
Anthony3 - 4/14/2010, 9:05 PM
It has to be CG. The suit is made by the ring. He will be wearing regular clothes and then the suit just materializes onto him, its made of energy, not fabric. He doesn't go off and change clothes. Using CG is not lazy or unnecessary, it just makes sense.
OverCross
OverCross - 4/14/2010, 9:09 PM
I give up on the suit if it has a flowing cape

Except for the original Green Lantern but I doubt we'll see him in this
Casinoskunk
Casinoskunk - 4/14/2010, 9:11 PM
I hope it looks better than the CG body replacement on the clones in Ep. III. It better look better than Spawn's cape and the jittery head movements on Shawn Wayans in Little Man.

The suit better look like Reynolds is wearing it!!
GreenLanternVan
GreenLanternVan - 4/14/2010, 9:19 PM
@Casinoskunk, I'm sorry but "The suit better look like Reynolds is wearing it!!" is a very silly statement.
$200 million budget, WB/DC tentpole film with sequels already talked about, high profile director, I'm pretty sure they're not messing around here.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 4/14/2010, 9:52 PM
I don't know why people want to discount the suit just because it is CGI. CGI or not, it doesn't matter to me as long as it looks good.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 4/14/2010, 10:11 PM
Yeah, seams are a big no-no. Also, as the animators for Superman Returns found out, it's sometimes hard to accurately duplicate the textures of some materials so if it's designed to be digital that isn't a problem.
