Writer reveals Green Lantern movie's progress and a few hints.

Screenwriter Marc Guggenheim told SCI FI Wire exclusively that he has just completed a new draft of a proposed live-action Green Lantern movie, based on a script by him, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti.

"In fact, I'm ... delivering another draft today," Guggenheim (TV's Flash Forward) said in an exclusive interview on Friday. "So it continues to move forward."

The film is expected to be directed by Martin Campbell, who stepped in for Berlanti, and is slated to begin production at Australia's Fox Studios in Sydney this summer for a release on June 17, 2011.

Guggenheim confirmed that his script will focus on Hal Jordan, based on the Silver Age DC Comics incarnation of the superhero, and how he became a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

Beyond that, Guggenheim remained tight-lipped. "You know I really can't [say anything]," he said. "I've sworn a blood oath of secrecy in relation to the project. But, you know, the thing I can tell you is that it is a very loving and respectful approach."

Guggenheim added: "The goal here is to do the best cinematic representation of the Green Lantern character. You know, there's no desire on anyone's part to completely change the character and just call this other character Green Lantern and try to ... draft off the name recognition. This is all about 'How do we bring the best version of this character to the silver screen?'"

As for the movie's source material, Guggenheim said, "We've drawn heavily from ... a lot of different sources in terms of the comic books. ... The character ... is several decades old, so ... we've really had an incredible amount of source material to cherry-pick from."

As for casting of the iconic character, rumors have centered on such of-the-moment actors as The Hangover's Bradley Cooper and Star Trek's Chris Pine. None are true, Guggenheim said.

"They're all false," he said. "I mean, they're all false insofar as we haven't chosen anyone yet. They're still in the negotiations, you know? There's a lot of names being talked about, and there's a lot of people being met, and a lot of ... actors reading the script. But if you read online [that] Pauly Shore's been cast as Hal Jordan, I can guarantee you we have not cast anyone." That last rumor was a joke. We think.

As for the process, Guggenheim said, "It remains a lot of fun. It's such a great character, it's been a really great project so far."

Green Lantern is a great character, but not so easy to adapt to the silver screen as lets say Batman. I hope they do something in the line of Iron Man and far from the Fantastic Four.

2011 is going to be an amazing year for Comic movies.
For some reason every time I see Kilawog I think Ron Pearlman for the role. lol
And I like Cooper but he is too old for Hal.

Green Lantern will be an epic film because the scope of the charater is such ... I wouldn't have a problem with any of the guys that were suggested before... Chris Pine, Bradley Cooper, and the dude from Fire Fly / Serenity .... I think those guys are good enough actors for this role...

Sinestro would HAVE to be in it... And at the movies end, you think we'd see the Qwardian Power Rings (aka The Sinestro Corps Rings)?

And they'd have to do the ring's connection to Will, and thus the Yellow Lantern's connection to fear...

I love, GL, and GLC, and I'm looking forward to Blackest Night... But I'm kinda hoping the movie doesn't head in a similar direction... Throwing in a bunch of colored rings would confuse/annoy non comic fans.

I havnt heard anyone better than Fillion for GL so far. Dorff is a great actor..have you seen Felon Shaman? But he is tiny enough to get his foot stuck in a tube of pringles

I still say David Borieanz is the best choice. He is Green Lantern. He has the voice the look and the ability. Fillion is my second choice though. To be fair I think there is a long list of actors who could be GL though. He isn't as hard to cast as someone like Thor.

Every movie and role is going to australia so why not Sam Worthington. May sound weird but I think he's too aggressive. I guess there's a difference between cocky and aggressive?

Wow it's sad to see how many stuck up pricks are on these boards. "Oh their a TV actor." That's gotta be the most stuck up thing ever. Get over your self most TV actors are just as good if not better than your average movie actor. These guys work a hell of a lot harder and some of them put out quality film every week for like 9 months.
stupify_me
stupify_me - 6/15/2009, 7:09 PM
Your the one I was refering to as stuck up anil. Since you can't imagine TV actors in movies. It's just so terrible.
stupify_me
stupify_me - 6/15/2009, 7:35 PM
Anil Rickly you don't know anything about acting. People stick to TV and not movies because of stuck up assholes who say "Their just TV actors. " Valentine sucks, but it was his first movie? Like year two of buffy. Give me a break. You would rather turn away good actors because they were on TV? Your the one taking risks with the role. So lets just cast some average ability Mega star because he has a big name and is in lots of movies and ignore all the talented actors who happen to be on TV shows. Multiple very successful TV shows, but still eww yuck
it's TV.

Kanye is a douche. While I don't like American Idol Simon Cowell is a bluntly honest person who is pretty much always right so whats wrong with that? Some people get their feelings hurt, but oh well grow up and deal with it. You'll understand when you hit puberty and stop with all the your mom child stuff.

David wasn't given a chance at a good role. He was given a role in a crappy teen slasher flick his second year of acting. How is that a chance? Also Hugh Laurie has done very well as has Gellar in all their films. Even the ones that were bad they did great performances. Especially Gellar there is a reason she still works in major motion pictures. She gets a pretty high amount of work and gets rumored for some highly anticipated movies as well.

I also want to say that I've never once said the names Tom Welling or Milo Ventimiglia.

Braff actually has done pretty damn well on the big screen as well. He has made some great films and always has a great performance.

I can see you care far more about names than talent though so no need to discuss this any further with you. I'd rather see talent in these roles of characters that I love than see some big name douche.

Here's an idea! Howabout we ditch the oft-failed three-tiered story arc and go for an endless supply of GL via the serial approach?

Wow. I am amazed by the awesome power of my pulsating intellect...

Nummies...

Green lantern has the potential to be one of the greatest comic book movies ever. It just has that epic feel to it, and if it is done right it'll have huge crossover potential similar to the dark knight.

if you watch special features Joss said the David was a mysterious pretty boy they found that wasn't amazing, but fit perfectly in to the role. Then as time goes by Joss starts to say how amazingly talented he has become over time and actually a lot of the best parts were all himand Joss has even admited to that in interviews. He gave all the credit to David and said anyone else in that role and the show ould of flopped season one.

stupify_me - 6/16/2009, 2:02 AM
Well all three his shows were great. Angel was able to be not only Angel, but his evil counterpart Angelous and he pulled both off with perfect. He even played a Darker version of Angel in mid season two that was different than anyone else and dare I say a complete bad ass. Then you can watch the show Bones where he plays an Alpha insecure guy. I mean Booth is far different from Angel they are no where near similar. Not to mention he is a hgue fan of the character and would probably make them stick to the tru thing. Also he did the voice for GL in New Frontier and was amazing perfect spot on voice.

You know, there is a difference between a TV performance and a movie performance. I don't shit on TV actors because most movie actors start off on TV. IMO, Jensen Ackles delivers a movie performance in a TV show where as Boreanaz delivers only TV performances wether he's on TV or Film. Which is why i don't see him in a mega motion picture as the leading role. An animated feature is also very different than a live movie. Anne Heche pretty much always delivers breath taking performances on screen but SUCKED MAJOR DEAD FOETUS BALLS in the Superman/Doomsday animated feature. So yes, Boreanaz has some talent but IMO, not motion picture worthy. As for Hugh Laurie, it was because he was MONUMENTALLY good on film that they gave him a shot on "House". Dou you have any idea how much he gets paid for that show??? It's more profitable for him to stick with it until it looses popularity. And just the fact that he could play a bumbling bad guy in 101 Dalmations, a loving down to earth father in Stuart Little and that sarcastic sac of lovable shit in House, proves he has talent on TV as well as on Film. Next stop, axe murderer in a suspense/horror feature a la "Frailty" :))
