Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night
Doors – The End Lyrics
“This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes, again
Can you picture what will be, so limitless and free
Desperately in need, of some, stranger's hand
In a, desperate land
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane, all the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake, he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best, the west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us, the blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and, then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door, and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother, I want to...
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, on a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, c'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end”
Anyway, the final green lantern film in the epic “Blackest Night Septology” Septology is a seven movie series. That's what I'm calling this series now.
This is the grand finally. The universe is ending, death is at the door, every friend, foe, ally, and enemy, all of them come together right now for the greater good.
Hal Jordan has had a great arc. We’ve seen him go from cocky and arrogant lantern to a man who realizes not everything is about him. He has hope for the future, not in himself but in the next generation of lanterns.
John Stewart has been through hell and back. We’ve seen what made him the man he is, we've seen him face his greatest failure and come back stronger than ever. He began as a wise veteran lantern, and through all the hardship become a diplomat, working with the blue, then the Violet. He's also found love and understanding in the most unlikely place. He is compassionate.
Guy was the hot headed rookie, now, he’s managed to take control of his anger and rage and use it positively, as the leader of the red lanterns.
Soranik was the green lantern of Korugar, always in the shadow of Sinestro, even more so when she learned he was her father. She's compromised her beliefs, as her father did once, and through this, slowly becomes more and more like her father. Now she uses fear as a weapon, reluctantly yes, but how long before it consumes her?
Simon, Jessica, and Kyle have each come into their own as lanterns. They have proved to themselves and to others they are heroes. These three have shown skill, controlling their fear, and balancing their emotions, but for some of them, the greatest challenge still comes. Soon, Kyle Rayner will have to use his strength and will. He will push him selves to the limit against a more powerful for than anything even the most veteran lantern has faced. More powerful than anything anyone has faced.
NEW CHARACTERS:
NEKRON: Goes by many names, the black, the darkness, the rot… In the beginning there was nothing. He is the nothing, manifesting in physical form. The light pushed it out, but in the dark corners of reality it still resides. It is the dark. The light has built atop it, and it wants its property back. This is its universe, and in its mind, we all belong to it.
We begin with Lyssa Drak. She sits with the book, chained to her by unbreakable bonds, sitting in space. All that has ever been is hers to see. She sees the past, Oa is formed. Life begins. The race the guardians belong to evolve, becoming the most ancient and powerful race in the universe. A group that would later become the guardians form. They see the pain and suffering of the universe, and seek to help. To protect and serve. The scientist Krona(who has been mentioned in previous movies as the first rogue guardian and the reason the guardians do not use emotion) discovers the emotional spectrum. They choose green, the color of will, and the most balanced emotion to power they're Manhunters. Through their will the Manhunters portal the Galaxy. They protect people, they save the day, again and again.
Krona continues to experiment with emotion, trying to harness the entire spectrum. The power of rage infects. The universe is filled with evil, he reprograms the Manhunters to destroy. The guardians are able to shut them down, and begin a manhunt for Krona. The power of greed infects. He must know everything. He constructs a machine to see the birth of the universe. His friends, Sayd, an unnamed female, and Ganthet try to stop him. The female is horribly scarred by Krona’s machine.
Krona is killed by the same blast. From the beginning of time, something is unleashed. The book of black.
The newly named Scar is put in charge of the book. The guardians decide, despite Ganthet’s protests, that they must swear off emotion forever. They decide though, that emotion is necessary in their troops. That was the failing of The Manhunters. They could not comprehend the ideas of rebelling against Krona, or of resisting. They however, must remain unemotional, and unbiased. Leaders cannot become emotional, they must make the best decision using only logic. They cannot allow another Krona.
Scar studies the book. It is a book of secrets. Everything that has ever happened is in the book. The book continues to write, recording more secrets. But the book also talks to her, whispering that the greatest secret of all is that the guardians have not forsaken emotion. They still use it. She is perfect, but they are corrupt. She will bring true order to the universe. The guardians will destroy everything, because they are afraid. They fear crossing the lines that must be crossed. Scar tries to resist. The book is lying.
Then, the prophecy comes. Abin Sur comes to the guardians. He tells them of Blackest night. Then they show fear. Scar realizes, the book is right. But despite everything, there was one line Scar never crossed. She never looked to the first page. She never looked to see the beginning of time, as Krona had tried to do.
All the lantern groups are together. The universe is ending. The dead rise across the universe, brought to life by black lantern rings. John is put in charge of leading a team of lanterns( Kilowog, some other green lanterns, Guy and some red lanterns, Fatality, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, and Indigo one to the dark planet. He thinks the rings are coming from that planet. The others are going to try and destroy the spreading black lantern rings in space and protect worlds the rings reach. Soranik says she has to go back to Korugar, as while she vowed to protect the galaxy as both a green and yellow lantern, Korugar is her number one priority. She takes the entire Sinestro Corps with her, despite Hal, Ganthet, and Sayd’s protests. She says she will keep in touch, and join them when Korugar is safe. Hal goes after Soranik.
On Earth Black Hand marched through the streets of Metropolis, the dead rising, a zombie army around him. Batman, Fire, Ice, the Flash, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Wonder Woman battle a zombie superman, protecting civilians that he tries to kill, trying to move him out of the city. Black Hand spews Black Lantern rings out of his mouth, which attach themselves to the dead. Zombie Superman taunts Batman for his role in his original death. The inexperienced Ice is attacked by Black Hand, who tries to drain her life force. She is saved by Fire.
Soranik arrives on Korugar with the Sinestro corps, to find chaos in the streets as those killed in the attack by Mongul once again walk among the living, killing all they encounter. The zombies only attack the side of the planet that is currently night time. The yellow lanterns are ordered by Soranik to protect the weak and destroy the Black Lanterns. We discover that the black lanterns are reformed by their rings whenever they are destroyed. Only by destroying the rings are they returned to being lifeless bodies.
Lyssa Drak studies the book, and decides to flip to the first page. The page that will show the beginning. The page that will show light begin, the start of the universe. We see darkness, nothing, the black. Then light. Cut to the group led by John flying through space. Larfleeze approaches Saint Walker, asking for his blue ring. Saint Walker tells him that only those devoted to hope can wield a blue ring. Larfleeze claims to always be hoping. He hopes for a blue ring, and a green ring, and a red ring, and a purple ring, he wants to collect them all actually. Saint Walker tells him hope is selfless.
John and his squad arrive at the dark planet, noticing no black rings. The touch down, using their rings for lighting to investigate. The area around the black lantern is vacant, empty. The black lantern though, glows with a dark light, blacker than the black around it, absorbing their rings light as it reaches it, enveloping it. John scans the power battery, and learns that it's powering up. .002% .003% .007%. It's power slowly grows. A green lantern screams, and we see: out of the darkness, a scythe through his chest! A giant hand rises up out of the ground, and swats several lanterns of various colors away! We hear their screams in the darkness. John orders everyone to fall back. Something massive and horrific rises from the earth. As the lanterns fly away, this thing in the shadows speaks in a voice that echoes throughout space. A voice of something elemental, more than human, yet familiar, as if it has always been there, preparing to speak:
RISE.
Millions of zombies rise from the planet of darkness, flying up into the skies of this world to kill the lanterns. Light constructs destroy some, but there are too many. A zombie attacks Larfleeze, attempting to bite off his hand. Larfleeze is angered, that's his, not theirs. Larfleeze, using the immense power of his ring raises an army of energy constructs, and holds back the zombies long enough to escape the dark planet. The strain of fighting every single black lantern of this world at once leaves Larfleeze unconscious. Saint Walker grabs him, and they fly. Guy, John, Fatality, Indigo one, and Saint Walker speak. That planet isn't where the rings are coming from, but it is connected to them somehow. The planet is full of rings, but not a single has been seen leaving the planet. It's the stronghold, not the factory.
The Sinestro Corps battle zombies on the surface of Korugar, when Soranik is approached by zombie versions of the politicians she killed last movie, who taunt her, saying she's become her father. She destroys them, and orders some of her troops to make contact with the military of the planet. She and the other corps get a communication from John that the rings aren't coming from the dark planet, but the power battery on its levels are rising. There are too many zombies there for a direct attack. Light harms them though, but it seems like the black rings reconstruct the bodies when they are damaged. He recommends attacking the rings, not the corpses.
Hal Jordan arrived on Korugar after following Soranik, and is soon attacked by the men Soranik killed. They tell him that Soranik is becoming more and more like her father. She killed them, and will kill more. Hal refuses to believe it, Soranik is a good lantern, a hero, and nothing like her father. They show him their wounds, wounds from hard light constructs. They tell Hal about how Sinestro was a good lantern too, and a hero, before he went bad. Soranik is dangerous. Hal has to kill her. Hal understands these things aren't the men that were killed though. They're just corpses. Something else is speaking through them. He questions the zombies as they battle. They are Nekron, The Black. They are the universe, the truth of the universe. They are what everyone secretly wants, what Sinestro, Scar, the guardians, the corps, and Soranik all want. They are the ultimate order: death, silence, a darkness that will envelope all until there is peace and everything is nothing. They attack and try to drain the life force of Hal so he destroys the black rings and goes to find Soranik.
Lyssis now on Earth, watching the battle against Black Hand, as the earth's light is eclipsed by the zombie Mogo. Superman and the zombies continue to protect Black Hand from harm as his parade of zombies continues, raising the dead around him as he vomits out dozens of black rings at a time. She searches the book of black to find Black Hand. She is gaining knowledge none have ever seen before. She is changing, her body absorbing the writing, which now appears on her skin as she reads.
We see him as a child. He's stares up at his father working in the mortuary. Time freezes, a ghostly Nekron, human sized, appears. William hand asks if he is death. He is not, he is the absence of life, and he is here for hand. William has a destiny. He will bring death to all, and bring peace and quiet. Nekron is gone. Hand remembers this day for the rest of his life. Lyssa senses something else in this place though, and leaves.
She travels to where Kyle, Simon, and Jessica, along with Sayd, Ganthet, and other lantern groups are currently battling a planet of zombies. They soon realize hope is lost in this battle, and use their rigs to construct ships for the last remaining inhabitants of this world to escape from as the dead overtake the world. Lyssa Drak appears, and the lanterns attempt to capture her. She fights them off with the books power, than tells them to go to earth to find the source of the black rings and disappears.
On Korugar Hal approaches Soranik, demanding to know what she did. She defends herself, saying that they were corrupt and deserved to die. Hal tries to remind her she was once a doctor, and she knows better. But according to her, with the galaxy as bad as it is now, maybe all the lanterns need to be more authoritative, and do what's necessary. Hal comments she’s sounding like Sinestro, but they get a message saying the source of the rings are from Earth. Hal leaves, but asks Soranik to come with him. She's one of the best lanterns out there and they’ll need her. She orders her troops to protect Korugar, and leaves with Hal.
While many lanterns are left in space, fighting zombies and destroying black rings, the main lanterns from each corps(Kilowog, Kyle, Simon, Jessica, Hal, John, Guy, a few red lanterns, most of the blue, Fatality, Carol, a few Violet, the indigo tribe, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, Soranik, Ganthet, and Sayd) teleport to just outside earth with the help of the Indigo tribe. They see Black rings flying out into the universe, and zombie Mogo blocking out the sun. John and Fatality head off to try and blow up Mogo.
On Earth, time freezes for Black Hand as Nekron appears again, asking if he can sense the light. That is life, and it must be destroyed, or it will prevent the perfect world from coming to pass. Black Hand releases thousands of rings, not just from him but from the other black lanterns, and they fly all over the world, attacking cemeteries. We see Slipknot, Diablo, Kgbeast, Doomsday, General Ludendorff, and virtually every other dead character from a DC movie appear in a cameo montage of the dead rising around the world.
The Lanterns arrive on Earth, Hal, KySimJes, Guy, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, and Carol join the Justice League, destroying Superman's ring, and obliterating the zombie army around them. We get a quick reuniting of various characters that know each other, Tora excitedly introduces Guy to Fire and Fire to Guy. The group notices a floating Lyssa watching, who comments she’s just here to observe. Kyle asks what she knows, and she lists various secrets: Larfleeze’s family is alive, a green lantern is destined to become the avatar of the white and fight the avatar of the black, Batman has filed on how to kill everyone in the Justice League just in case, and that the thing they are fighting is more ancient than they can imagine.
She informs them that she’s been watching and researching throughout all of this, and now understands everything. She is becoming one with the book. The darkness from before the universe began has become sentient. It calls itself Nekron, the word for black in the oldest language of the guardians race. It now wants to bring the universe back to being what it once was. It was once everything, nothing existed except for it. The appearance of life, and light, took that from him. He has slowly, over trillions of years, gained sentience, and consolidated its power. It now is ready to take a physical form and take back the universe. She promises to tell how to stop him, but only if the lanterns promise her one favor. They agree, and she tells them that William Hand’s death began this. If Hand is brought back to life, Nekron will be stopped and the black lantern corps will be destroyed. This can only be done with all the rings.
John and Fatality battle zombies, whose rings have flown them out into space and to Mogo, as they try to make their way to Mogo’s core to once again blow him up, but are completely outmatched, outnumbered, and outgunned. John grabs a black ring off a zombie to try and check how much the black power batteries energy has increased. The ring is programmed with an ancient language, making it difficult. He eventually accesses it, discovering that it is at 90.98%
On earth the lanterns discover they are horribly outnumbered as they try try and destroy the rings coming from Black Hand, at the same time trying to get past his zombie army to him. In Coast City, Hal saves his brother’s family from zombies attacking them with Carol’s help. His brother informs him that most people thought he and Carol had been killed by Hector Hammond, but he knew they were alive. Hal comments about how he’s back where he started, then drops his family off at Ferris Air, telling them they’ll be safe there, and the soldiers at Ferris have weapons to hold off the zombie hoard. They wish him good luck.
Kyle fights along Batman, who has yellow, Blue, and Green rings at the same time. His energy constructs mix together, creating a turquoise color. Kyle comments he didn't know that could be done.
Black Hand rises from the rubble in Metropolis. He attacks Simon Baz, angered that Simon prevented him from blowing up a train station by stealing his van.Jessica and Kyle fight him off. Black Hand battles them through the sky eventually ending up punching Kyle, who Black Hand has become angered at for stopping him from draining Simon's life energy, all the way to Coast city, on the other side of the country from Metropolis. Jessica tries to help a comatose Simon, who was nearly killed when Black Hand began to drain him.
The lanterns around the world are realizing that they are hopelessly outnumbered as the dead continue to rise from graves across the planet. Ganthet approaches Sayd, explaining that he has always admired her and enjoyed her company, and asks if she's aware of the customs of other species related to lifelong coupling and mating pairs, asking if she would be interested as this may be his last chance to ask. She agrees to it.
Soranik is approached by the zombie Sinestro, who tells her he's regained control of his body from the ring, and is here to help. This is a ruse, as the corps begins trying to drain her life force. Nekron taunts her, telling her that she and her father belong together on his side. She breaks free, and kills the zombie that was once her father, destroying his ring and blowing up his body.
A green lantern begins freaking out. He isn't cut out for this. He’s just a glorified space cop, and this is the end of the universe. Hal Jordan rallies him, telling him they are space cops, they go in, protect people, save the day, then move onto the next mission. That's their job and now, they need to do it. Soranik overhears this, and suggests they all create temporary energy rings with their rings to deputize people of earth and raise their ranks. Larfleeze doesn't want to, but is convinced by Hal, who offers him his flip phone.
We see people around the world getting rings, (lex orange, scarecrow yellow, superman blue, Wonder Woman Violet, batman gets will, fear, and hope and tries to decide which to pick, and we see a bunch of regular, average people)
John and Fatality manage to make it to Mogo’s heart with the help of some deputized lanterns. They blow up Mogo, and the sun shines down, catching zombies around the world on fire. But, then Hand tells Kyle, who he has pinned to the floor, draining his life energy that they're too late. His ring buzzes with a 100% charged and in a massive explosion, the massive Black Lantern Power battery grows out of the ground behind Hand.
Hand begins to morph, as his body is overtaken by Nekron’s. He rises into a gigantic form, the size of a skyscraper, as he shifts into the enormous and skeletal Nekron. Nekron begins to spread blackness as everything around him rots and decays. Lights flicker out, including lantern rings. It spreads as more and more is destroyed. Lanterns are killed left and right. Kyle, Simon, and Jessica call for representatives from every Corp to attack Nekron with a single blast, hoping it will somehow destroy Nekron and return Hand to life. They shoot at Nekron, injuring him as the beams meet to create a white light. It hurts Nekron, but doesn't stop him.
Several of the lanterns are killed as Nekron’s black energy spreads, moving through Coast city, destroying and killing everything it encounters. Kilowog dies saving a little girl from the black energy. Kyle, Simon, Hal, John, Indigo One, Saint Walker, Larfleeze, Soranik, Carol, Guy and Jessica meet. If they don't stop this, it's over. Kyle thinks that they could create pure white energy if someone took one of every corps ring. The group looks to Hal to take the rings, but he steps back, telling them to give their rings to Kyle. He’s the hero now. Saint Walker gets Larfleeze to give up is ring, promising the one thing Larfleeze hopes for.
Kyle says goodbye to his friends Jessica and Simon, and to Ganthet, Sayd, and Hal. Then he becomes the white lantern, flying into the black, and shooting a beam of energy at Nekron as the black begins to decay him, telling William Hand:
RISE.
….The black rings around the world disintegrate. Hand is returned to life. The world is saved. Kyle is pulled out of the wreckage. Soranik uses her medical skills to save him. Weeks later, Saint Walker is reburying bodies, and then praying over them to tell them that all will be well, and he apologizes for the desecration of their graves. We see that this is the final grave of an entire cemetery. Larfleeze arrives, and Saint Walker leaves with him, telling him it's time to find his family.
Tora wants to live on Earth, and Guy promises to visit when he can, which should be often. He's spreading out the red lanterns, and has chosen Earth's sector for his own.
William Hand is now in prison at Belle Reve.
John and Fatality are still together, both cleaning up the galaxy and hunting down criminals after the chaos caused by Blackest night. A lot of governments were toppled, a lot of criminals freed, but they're there to put everything back together and save the day.
Simon and Jessica have chosen to remain on earth, but will come out to space when they are needed. Kyle however, has discovered a white power battery and ring in the wreckage of Coast city, and believes it's meant for him, created in the blast that returned Hand to life. Lyssa Drak appears to ask for her favor, now without the book, which had written itself into her skin. She tells them Nekron is now no longer sentient, and after what happened he may never return. She whispers the favor into Kyle's ear. Kyle doesn't know who the person she's referring to is, and asks. She tells him to just do it, and he agrees. Lyssa Drak and Sinestro now live in an abandoned palace in the outer reaches of the galaxy. It was all part of the plan. He’d been meeting with her in secret before his death, after she told him that she had discovered how to return the dead back to life from her book. It was the perfect plan. He could die in a way that inspired his daughter to take up his mantle without the consequences of death. All Lyssa needed to do was learn the specifics then manipulate events so that the White lantern would be created without anyone knowing the truth. Now, he can retire in peace.
Kyle flies off into space, and meets Ganthet and Sayd, who tell him that the white lantern is the perfect balance of the emotional spectrum. He's the next generation of lantern, here to change the universe for the better. It's a new dawn, and a new start. The old corps made mistakes, and failed, but in the end, with Kyle's help, they saved everyone. It's the start of something special, but this isn't just about Kyle according to him, they'll need everyone for this.
Hal speaks to Soranik, who wants to work with the green lanterns, as part of a multi corp alliance after everything that happened. She realizes she was wrong for what she did, and is going to make the Sinestro corps something better than what Sinestro wanted, to try and atone, and to do do better.
Carol and Hal talk, everyone on earth except for his family thinks their dead, so their probably isn't that much point in reastablishing their lives. They're just gonna go missing again, because the galaxy needs them to keep the peace after everything that happened. The green lanterns have chosen Hal as their new leader, and Carol had the Star Sappires. They fly off into space together.
THE END
