Martin Campbell, the Director of the smash hit Casino Royal, is in negotiations with WB to direct Green Lantern. Martin Campbell has previously directed 007 hit Goldeneye and two Zorro films.

Although WB is craving any news about a potential sequel to the Dark Knight from Christopher Nolan, the studio is willing to forge ahead and give the green light to one of the most beloved superhero's in demand to go to the silver screen. Projects such as Superman and The Justice League have recently stalled and with the attachment of Martin Campbell as the director of the new Green Lantern movie (dare I say franchise) puts this upcoming movie on everyone's A list to go see.

I am sure that no one will mess this potential blockbuster up over at the WB(hopefully)?!?! With a solid script already in the works and news of Martin becoming attached to this upcoming film its almost a sure bet the WB has another huge summer tent pole on their hands. I cant wait to see Hal Jordan on the big screen blasting some baddie to bits with his power ring. No actor has been attached to the lead role, I think Aaron Eckhart (who recently played Two Face in TDK) would do a great job as Hal.

Hopefully WB will use their collective heads and think about ways to intertwine a few of the characters from around the DC universe. This will make the Green Lantern movie more enjoyable and create opportunities for other movies involving the super heroes that do get cameos. This news has long been coming, finally we here about a director.

I can't wait to see Hal Jordan on the big screen blasting some baddie to bits with his power ring!

Actually, Ryan Gosling's name has been attached to the Hal Jordan role for some time. He's best known for his role in The Notebook, but the film in which he really impressed me was Lars and the Real Girl. He plays a guy who falls in love with a blow-up sex doll. Really a great film, and he's definitely got the talent needed to carry a leading role. I don't know too much about the Green Lantern, but he's got the talent and the looks. His imdb page even mentions the Green Lantern movie in the "NewsDesk" section.

Bornez, Viggo, Fillion, these guys are all too old for this movie.

In the script, Hal is a 28 year old test pilot, not the burnt out fighter pilot.

Yea, agreed with ROR and SHAMAN, since I am the freakin' MAN when it comes to GL knowledge (I kick myself for nto ebing up early enough to nap this damned article) Viggo would do an amazing job. I don't like Boreanaz, although he does a great job voice-acting for Hal. Ryan Gosling is a boy and I'm almost positive has NO knowledge of Hal Jordan aside from what he may have possibly read in a recent comic book. "Isn't he the green guy in tights with a ring or somethin'?" is what i think Gosling would sound like talking about my favorite character.

I totally agree with Ion and Shaman - there can be only one selection as far as Hal is concerned (and I hate the idea of only having certain actors being 'THE ONE' for certain parts but...) Viggo Mortensen is hands-down THE MAN for the job. Not only does he look the part, but he brings a certain gravitas and intensity to anything and everything he does that will really sell the part and propel it to the next level...

i have never seen or read anyting with GL in it so i know nothing about this character. Which im glad, becasue now i cant critique the s*** out of this movie and i can just enjoy it for what its worth.

Good point guys, and if the script is written for a 28 year old, it's misswritten! Kill the script writer before he gets it approved! Youth is Kyle's job! What, is he gonna be 10 years old in this movie? Man that would be "starting off on the wrong foot"!!!
IonParallax
IonParallax - 2/5/2009, 2:03 PM
OK. Yes, Hal was young when he started as a GL, so 28 really isn't that bad. With all the retcons and delving into the Sceret Origin and what not, it's really not a bad age for Hal. His best stories came MUCH later of course, but still not too terrible. Also, with the age thing, Uh, people who are well into their 20's and 30s play teenagers on a REGULAR basis, for a perfect example, Tom Welling. Hello the guys 32 now and playing what? a 20 year old? So, I'm still going with Viggo on this one, just because he's 50 doesn't mean a thing. The guy definitely has the chops to play Hal to his fullest potential and I STILL give props to SHAMAN for that choice. Top notch. Torque it's both a good and bad thing you haven't ever read anything GL, good because like you said, you won't be able to critiuqe the **** out of this movie, bad because you're missing out on one of the best ongoing characters in the DCU. If there's anything you want to know, hop on over to Book of Oa (fansite section) and check out the articles, ESPECIALLY the Spotlights as they do as their namesake says; shine the light on various characters throughout the GL universe.

I love Viggo but in my personal opinion he doesn't look anything like the Green Lantern. He definitely looks too old as well. So far I haven't really liked any of the choices on here yet. If they do an older Hal how about Joaquin Phoenix????

Supermike

If they do a GL movie why not start with the first one Alan scott
IonParallax
IonParallax - 2/5/2009, 3:07 PM
Because, Supermike, several reasons:
1.) Alan Scott was never a MEMBER of the GLC. The Guardians did not induct him in the Corps, he got his ring and battery in a totally different manner than the rest of the GLC. Not until WAAAAY later after 5 or 6 retcons did he become an honorary member.
2.) Hal Jordan is THE quintessential Green Lantern. After the Golden Age came and went, Hal Jordan was inducted in the GLC in 1959, AFTER Alan Scott was reduce to a freakin' sidekick in his own comics and then eventually cancelled like the rest of the Golden Age.
3.) As much as he was the first Green Lantern in comic book history, in continuity, he was NOT the first Green Lantern from Earth, there have been at LEAST a dozen Earth based GL's going back as far as the 10th century.
Including Alan, Hal, Guy, John, Kyle, Charlie Vicker, Yulan Got, Waverly, Donna, Daniel Young and several others.
4.) The Golden Age was full of slapstick and comedy, as much as it had drama and action. They don't want comedy and slapstick.

I could go on and on and on with the reasons why they SHOULDN'T start with Alan Scott, but I'll stop there.

The cool thing about green lantern for a movie idea is that in the comicbook, like 3 different humans have been green lantern. So, if the person who plays him in the first movie isn't liked then the reboot can just have a different be given the ring. So, young or old doesn't matter.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 2/5/2009, 5:15 PM
Schueller, check my above post and see just how many humans (thats' not even all of them) have been a GL. It goes way deeper than most people know.

I wouldn't mind Fillion being Hal, it's a relatively decent fit.

BETTY, he won't be 20. That's a guarantee. Hal was much older when he acquired the ring from Abin Sur. Unless they're going the Kyle Rayner route, in which case 20 is close enough. But, they're not going that route, or at least, they SHOULDN'T.

rorschach01 what´s with the avatar?

-Well Aaron Eckhart SAID that he wanted to be either Green Lantern OR Captain America... SO if they are going for the JLA crossover WITH Chris Bale as Batman, then there is no way Eckhart will be in it (because he would be already Two-Face in the same tie-ins), but if The Batman from the JLA movie is a different take from that of Nolan´s, THEN AGAIN Eckhart has a chance to be Hal Jordan as GL in the solo film AS WELL as in the WB/DC´s JLA movie.

-As for the director well yes, Bond is not Green Lantern, but also Bond is not Zorro.. so Campbell has managed very different characters BUUUUUUUUUT:

.--- have you heard the Audio-Doccumentary for both The Mask of the Zorro and the sequel The Legend of the Zorro?
in those Campbell comments that THE STUDIOS CHANGED a lot of what we saw in the final product (especially having alternate endings, and using them or not depending on the audiences´ reactions to the test screenings).. he said thing like.." I felt that..well, the studio felt that this way, some changes would have to be maid in order to be able to have Antonio and Catherine back for a third film", talking about changing the original intro and original ending for the sequel, where we would have seen the Zorro´s son at the beginning writing his memories, and in closing the movie with that young actor again, dressed aas the new Zorro riding his horse, with Banderas and Zeta-Jones characters, now aged, looking at him going away.

What i mean is that when a director is openly agree to change the source material in order to satisfy/obey the studios suits well..i don´t fell ok at all...
besides in the behind the scenes extras from the DVDs we can see he is an impatient- no tolerant guy with his crew when things don´t go as he wants or would like to.

Shaman - 2/6/2009, 1:29 PM
Nolan ain't coming back because he doesn't want the JLA to happen. DC/WB want to make JLA happen because Marvel is kicking ass right now. So that means that DC/WB are going ahead with the batmovies and incorporating Batman in the dcu without Nolan. In a few weeks, we'll get the news of a new director to helm Batman. Nolan won't comment much. That settles the batman issue. I think that Eckheart is more suited for Hal Jordan than Captain America but i'd rather see Viggo as Hal. Martin Campbell will do well with GL :))

I will be extremely pissed if they cast some teeny-bopper as Hal Jordan... this is not GL90210, for god's sakes. I about had a heart attack when I was reading the casting rumors for JLA.

i think viggos gettin kinda old, but could possibly pull it off sham.
ryan gosling is a possibility as well
for me its the dedication they have to the role, and the mind set they have for that character
hal jordan is possibly one of the strongest superheroes with his ring, but also fights for side of good, and is JLA material so hopefully this isnt ruined.
im realyl excited to see how this plays out
SirJediFrank
SirJediFrank - 2/6/2009, 4:48 PM
Shaman i think Campbell can pull this one off too. The thing i am VERY worried is about the post production-editing.. maybe the planned ending has Kyle considered, for instance.. but in the last moment the Studios will tell Campbell:
"No... better go out and make some additional shooting (just like in the TWO ZORRO MOVIES) and have Hal Jordan flying around-..for the sequel"

yes i know i am worrying a lot ahead of things..but it has happened to M Campbell before, thats all

When they do the Green Latern Movie they should

1. Don't have Green Latern on earth all of the movie. Start him off on earth then go out to space.

2. Have all the green laterns in the movie. don't stop at hal gordon, bring the whole corp.

3. Have one cameo. Maybe Superman.

4. This should be the story of hal gordan and how he change to the spectrum (this happens on the 3rd or 4th movie)
