Hello Everyone,

One Marvel film I can not wait for is Guardians of The Galaxy. One in character in mind I am really excited for will be Rocket Raccoon. Now Marvel has never done anything like this, well unless you want to count Howard The Duck but I can say ROCKET RACCOON IS GOING TO BE AWESOME and different at the same time!

An awesome talking space raccoon with a gun. It may seem far fetched to many people but to me it isn't. For once I have to say, it's called science fiction and anything can happen in a world like this. Compare Guardians of The Galaxy as a more superhero orientated version of Star Wars. They both have similar elements.

One thing that Rocket Raccoon could really benefit from is a motion capture style of acting. Similar to Andy Serkis in Rise of The Planet of The Apes how he fully captured the emotions of the ape character. It could really make the character seem so real and in tune with the audience apposed to just a simple CGI creation. It brings in such a raw performance, not many people may notice but for the ones that do it's really a treat to see such an advancement of technology on the big screen.

(Andy Serkis)

(Even Mark Ruffalo's Hulk was Motion Capture)

If done right and not rushed through he may be one of Marvel's best onscreen adaptions. It just goes to show how such an advanced in technology could of use in films like these. Compared to the old films of puppetry and CGI animations. The Ewoks in Star Wars were actual people in costumes which is hard to believe today. Rocket Raccoon could actually turn out to be a really fun likable character. Looking from the concept art Marvel has a brilliant idea in store for this character. I can't wait to see more from him.

I think it would be greatly done via both motion capture and someone else doing the voice. The top actor I would choose to voice Rocket Raccoon would be Hugh Jackman. I don't think Rocket Raccoon needs an extremely comedic tone like Jim Carrey. He needs to be really serious. I think most of the seriousness from Rocket Raccoon and some of his lines is where most of the real tone converts too on how people perceive who he is. I think Hugh Jackman has the voice that will perfectly blend in with Rocket Raccoon. Despite him also playing The Wolverine another comic book character it would not affect anything at all. If your not convinced of the choice yet watch this movie clip from "Rise of the Guardians". Hugh Jackman actually does the voice for The Easter Bunny in the film. I think it actually represents what I see as a voice for Rocket Raccoon.

Great editorial man! I agree with you 100% except that i would actually want to see Andy Serkis do Rocket Racoon. He is the king of motion capture and I think he could knock it out of the park with Rocket Racoon. Just look at the guys track record! I mean Gollum, Caesar and King Kong, let's add Rocket Racoon to the list. I could also see Hugh Jackman doing a great job with it,but I'm a huge fan of Andy Serkis and his work

I was thinking Andy Serkis could motion capture him and Hugh can possibly do the voice over. I am not sure if that would bring out the full detail but it could work.

If they could work it out that would be cool, but so much of what Serkis does is connected. Its hard to explain but his movements and actual voice go together. He is a very talented voice actor though and can do a huge array of voices. I'm sure he can nail Rocket Racoon. Another character I forgot to list was Captain Haddock in the Adventures of Tintin

Yeah I saw him in the movie, he was very talented. I think your coming on to something that might actually work for the better!

Good work man, I agree with you on everything except your comment about Rocket Raccoon needing to be serious. Rocket is the comic relief of the team and I expect him to be that in the movie. While it shouldn't be to the extreme of him bouncing off the walls and acting like a cartoon character, but he is very witty in the comics, and should have one-liners when the moment arises.

Im not for true facial mocap. If you do that you have to make RR face more humanoid. It works for characters like the Hulk, golem, and apes, because they have human like faces and expressions. I dont want a snoutless RR like they did with the lizard in ASM. The face of RR shouldnt work like a humans, and the less human like the better. Full Cgi is probably the best way to go, or go more practicle with animatronics.

I have always liked the idea of Jason Statham for the voice. RR is comic relief, but its because he's a serious character in a fluffy exterior. Yes the one liners should fly in heaps but more like a ben grim, and less like bugs bunny.

Good article by the way.

Did you really just write a serious article? Wow. Not only that, but i agree with it? It must be getting really cold in hell today...

If serkis played RR I think it would actually add more credibility to the role.

Hmm I dunno Jacky. I don't see a shit-talking, machine gun wielding space raccoon working outside of a comedy or kiddie action film like star wars. Don't get me wrong I just dont think the general audience will take him seriously and probably treat GoG as a kids movie.

It could work out, which would be sweet, so who knows?

at first I thought you were all bat shit crazy about the Hugh Jackman part, but after watching that guardians clip it was pretty good. I still think Serkis could do it better in my opinion though.

@fortycals I think you can rule Statham out of this, after what he said about his interests in doing science-fiction movies. I think he would have made a good job too.

I want to see Raccoon move like a human most of the time, but he's still a Raccoon, and I think I'd like to see him run on four legs and spur out a raccoon scream when he starts fighting.

Imagine that, you see him with his big guns all the movie, and during the final battle, near the end, he runs out of ammo and starts tearing shit up like a wild animal, similar to what Kelsey Grammar was doing with Beast in X-3. He acted like a human the whole movie, but when it was time to be agile and kick some asses, the beast side took over, and he was all four limbs and growling. It shows how he's a badass, guns or no guns. Versatility, a huge characteristic of the real raccoons.

I don't want him to be a raccoon only in appearance. That's why I think he should be half mocap, half CGI. I don't want a human in mocap suit mimicking a raccoon, no thanks.

"may seem far fetched".......um... you do realise that it's a movie and movies are not reality and anything is aloud to happen in a movie, and the whole point of a movie is to escape reality right?

also... so are comic books! show me someone who looks at a comic and says "that would never happen in real life" and i'll show you someone getting slapped in the face.

Gotta say that I would like to see MCChris voice RR. It would be a nice nod to geekdom, and I think it would fit. Its a longshot that it would even be considered though.

Yeah I dont think Statham will happen realistically. I just would prefer more of a statham voice, than say a peewee herman type of voice. More clint eastwood less roger rabbit.

(speaking as a video game artist) Mocap can translate from the face of a person to the face of an animal. You just need a well set up rig and well thought out blendshapes. All Mocap goes through clean up so there would be fine tunning aswell. I have no worries about them F'ing this up. They know what is at stake. They'll make this awsome because the have made nothing but good decisions upto this point.

@fettastic Agreed... I like the first concept better.looks more alien. Good thing is the one in the cantina and the one in the group picture look very similar. Also the artist that did those, did the group concept art with all of the avengers, which we exactly what we got in the movie.

I doubt they can do anything to make me happy with Rocket Raccoon. I just don't like the character. It's too ridiculous.

I'm also not a big fan of the more 'cosmic' comic stories and characters (other than Infinity Gauntlet, for some reason). The writers never seem to get the enormity of space, which of course leads to characters which are far too limited for their supposed powers and movements.

Then, too, it's bad enough that all the major aliens tend to be humanoid. Making a talking raccoon? *sigh*
