While apparent to some, it seems that many people still believed that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2's Baby Groot was the same character as Vol. 1's Groot. Their director, James Gunn, has finally put an end to this misconception.

A conversation on twitter debated which 2017 shelf-stuffer was superior: Baby Groot or Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Porgs. One user backed up their argument with a point which Gunn then dismantled:

Therefore putting an end to misconception.
This way Groot's sacrifice in Vol. 1 isn't belittled, a topic that Gunn has previously discussed in reference to the possibilty of Michael Rooker's Yondu returning.

He will never be brought back to life as long as I’m around. His passing needs to mean something.

It's safe to say that he more or less feels the same about Groot's sacrifice.
