In the comic books, Peter Quill's Element Guns are a staple of his comic book adventures as Star-Lord, but they've never been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As you'll likely know, they give the hero the power to summon wind, fire, water, and lightning, a goofy idea, but one that's led to a lot of memorable moments over the years.

Recently, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was asked by a fan on social media why he decided against using them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Explaining that he believes they would have been "one weird thing too many," the filmmaker noted that he's a big fan of the guns in the comic books but, "An audience can only take so much new science fiction stuff explained to them in a two-hour film." That's a valid point, and it's not exactly like Star-Lord has missed them too much on the big screen.

Gunn would later point out that introducing them without an explanation wouldn't make much sense.

Do you agree? Check out the writer and director's comments in full below:

@TheWalkingCuban - The ankle thrusters are pretty cool, I think. Especially when he uses them offensively (to throw Gamora).

Also, he's got those gravity/magnet grenades.

@Spock0Clock - not sating they’re not, but he was more a space Indiana Jones than a space Han Solo. What the cabbage?

@TheWalkingCuban - Isn't Han Solo himself already "space Han Solo"?

@Kyos - you’re thinking of Space Han Solo. Which is basically Earth Han Solo.

I think they totally could have gotten away with having them and just not talking about them, but I don't really want the elemental guns so I don't care.

I honestly don't care but that's a lame excuse.

@Doomsday8888 - exactly, and in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 they had this stupid ship repair tool

@IcemanX - I really liked this but yeah none of this was explained lol

@IcemanX - I think he's talking about the first movie as they was a lot to introduce to a new audience and that thing seemed unecessary. In Vol 2 he went bonkers with no holds barred, but there was no point in bringing the elemental gun after establishing Quill's iconic guns. But I think he kept some aspect of it. You can see Star-Lord shifting from pure blast to electric energy from time to time.

I really loved the character in GOTG.
Liked him less in GOTG 2
And recall not liking him at all in IW/EG

Just seemed more dickish and less likeable every movie.
🤷‍♂️

I don’t mind that they’re not there but that’s a wierd explanation. There’s all sorts of wierd weaponry, it’s science fiction, nobody would have needed an explanation. Just see him switch the dial to different symbols and people would just go ‘oh its a gun that shoots different stuff. Cool.’ Would have been cool for the audience to never know what tricks the gub had in store next. Although then it could come across as a lazy ‘get out of the situation free’ device, I guess. Like oh no we’re trapped in ice! Lucky I’ve got my trusty fire gun. I guess I get it.

How about explaining one little important mistake in every sci-fi movie: How can the whole Galaxy speak english?

@DARKSIDEIS - Translator implant in neck

@DARKSIDEIS - They don't, they have translator implants. Captain Marvel asks a security guard if her translator is working after crashing on Earth and he was looking blankly at her. And:

"Enhancements
Translator implant in neck"

@IcemanX - thats clearly been retconned since both iron man and spider-man were able to talk to all of the aliens. There's no way tony could gather all the knowledge of every alien race to translate nor would he since his whole experience with aliens is them attacking. Everyone clearly just speaks english here. I do have a theory on this that english is a common language in the galaxy for trade agreements, then the asgardians taught it to ancient humans when they had the frost giants war.

And before you insist this was never stated, bare in mind that we also got confirmed that gamora was the only survivor or her species when, in infinity war, we're expressly told half of her people survived and thrived.

Wasn't too bother by it that they were missing. Seeing his gun blow bubbles in Infinity War was a cool nod though
