GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Isn't Marvel's STAR WARS

Marvel Studios' President of Production, Kevin Feige, uses certain traits of Peter Quill/Star-Lord to dismiss Guardians of the Galaxy comparisons to Star Wars and to differentiate the two space epics!

Despite its otherworldly story, setting and wide array of characters, Guardians of the Galaxy will be very different from the Star Wars franchise, insists Kevin Feige. In fact, when Empire asked him if the James Gunn-directed adaptation could be considered "Marvel's Star Wars," the Marvel Studios president declared, "We’re not making this to make Marvel’s Star Wars. We’re doing this to explore the other side of the existing Marvel Universe. The fact that Peter Quill is a human from our time, that he carries a personal cassette recorder with him, already it’s very different. It’s not a long, time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it’s now in a galaxy far, far away," Feige said.

Anyhow, production on Guardians of the Galaxy is shaping up nicely as director James Gunn and the film crew were spotted shooting unknown scenes at Hemel Hempstead Hospital in London earlier this week. "The filming did not affect patient services in any way and the film company has made a donation to hospital funds for the use of our facilities,” said a spokesman for the Hemel Hempstead hospital. And not too far away at Shepperton Studios, construction of a practical spacecraft cockpit that measures about 25ft by 15ft is underway for other Guardians scenes. What do you think?

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios, is directed by James Gunn from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, and the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The all-star cast includes Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close as Nova Prime. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is slated for August 1, 2014!

I like the reasoning that "it doesn't take place in a galaxy, far, far, away, therefore it is not Star Wars-y"

Yes it is, Captain America was Marvel's Saving Private Ryan, Thor was Marvel's ET

I agree. GOTG is honestly if adapted right, better than Star Wars.

There I said it. Now you can hate on me.

He's smart to distance his move from Star Wars -- that's not a comparison you want to make, especially before the movie releases.

However, after it comes out, if independent viewers and critics compare it favorably to Star Wars (the good ones), then I'm sure they'll eat that shit up.

The DnA comic was amazing!
This newest version is less amazing, but still a good read.
Gotta get rid of the omnipresent Iron Man though . . .

That sounds fine too me. I wasnt expecting for the film to be exactly like Star Wars. I'm hoping the film will be something out of the ordinary and something original that we havent seen on film before.

I'm hyped.

I just want to know whose voicing Rocket Raccoon.

When we say, "this film is [_]'s Star Wars," the implied connection is more one of tone and the the overall experience, rather than exact time or setting. And GotG at a glance sure seems like Marvel's Star Wars. Or granted, maybe Marvel's Farscape.

Star Wars itself has arguably not been Star Wars (meaning the equivalent experience of the original) since the 1980s.

I've never read any incarnation of the comics and know f*ck all about the characters, aside from the Korvac episode of Avengers: EMH, but I'm really, really excited about this movie. I'm actually looking forward to this more than any other Marvel movie in the works. Probably because I'm a James Gunn fan, but I just think it's really cool that Marvel decided to go the space route. Something Green Lantern really screwed the pooch on.

I can't remember what kept me away, the past 7 days have been a bit of a blur. So we can assume I've, if anything, tested the boundaries of my drinking. ;-)

In all seriousness, you all know I'm hyped for this movie and I'm glad they won't just imitate SW.

And, Orphix, don't even joke about that sort of shit, you'll give Gusto one of his "trouser expansions".

Even though it's the original Guardians (pictured below), Marvel is fine with people thinking of this new group as Avengers in Space.
