James Gunn Comments On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY's 3D And IMAX Conversions

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has taken to his official Facebook page to reveal that he's been greatly involved with the process of converting the Marvel Studios movie to 3D, promising that there will be a major difference if you decide to see it in both that format and IMAX 3D.

Just got out of working on the Guardians cut for IMAX 3D and I'm unbelievably excited about it. Guardians of the Galaxy has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you'll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I've been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it's spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.

As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I've personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it's coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling.

Just wanted to share some of this stuff with you guys since I haven't had a chance to talk about the 3D much. Hope you're all having a great day. Hi!

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro, Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released on August 1st in the US and July 31st in the UK.

Eh yeah I'll be seeing this in 2D in my second viewing that is. The screening that next week I heard is in IMAX 3D and I'm not even a fan of 3D which really sucks. Either way, he better be telling the truth. The last film with good 3D I saw was the 3rd Transformers film. The rest of the MCU films have been meh in terms of 3D.

For some reason I don't believe him. Maybe this will be the first super hero movie that actually uses the technology.

Star Trek Into Darkness had some cool moments in 3D, still not worth the extra cash, though.

Switching aspect ratios? Seriously? This still bugs me when I watch the Dark Knight Rises. It pulls me right out of the movie when it switches between IMAX and widescreen. It's jarring.

Avatar is the only movie with a very good 3D effecct, even the 3D bluray

3D gives me really bad eye strain, anyway. I love IMAX however, but only when shot in it. As horrible as The Dark Knight Rises was, it did look stunning.

The changing aspect ratio in DKR never bothered me...and I actually appreciated the times they did it as it definitely enhanced the scene for me

3D in general however does give me a headache for some strange reason

@localsonlymills Most likely due to eye strain. Not every movie uses 3D the same so your eyes has to adjust, happens to me.

"Ugh. Changing aspect ratios pissed me off in TDKR! One of the dumbest things I've ever seen..."

Wat. Apparently I'm in the minority on this, but watching scenes like Batman jumping off the skyscraper in Hong Kong or Bane destroying the plane in The Dark Knight Rises prologue...man, when that aspect ratio changed and filled the entire screen, what a feeling! It's ridiculously immersive (much more so than 3D ever is) and it really showcases the strengths of IMAX. I can't even fathom how that could be annoying or distracting.

@SauronsBANE1 EXACTLY! The thing I love though, is how subtle it transitions into IMAX. You never notice it but when you do, it's worth the acknowledgement.

This'll be the 4th time I've seen a movie in IMAX 3D. First being Avatar, 2nd The Hobbit: DoS, 3rd being Capt. America: TWS (Not recommended but it was a free movie and it was a awesome movie).
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 6/5/2014, 4:18 PM
@Phronesis, Yep, fully agree. I can never pinpoint exactly when the transition occurs, but all of a sudden you realize how much more massive the screen looks, and boy is it a treat!

Though I'd love to see the real, actual IMAX on the really big screen. The "fake" IMAX in the theaters by me are nice and all, but from what I've heard nothing compares to the 2-story big screen that only select locations have. Nearest one to me is 2 hours away in NYC, and it's pretty expensive. Still, I'd love to see at least one movie there that was actually filmed with IMAX cameras (guess that means I'm seeing Interstellar there!)

I will try and make it a 4d-experience here. Everytime Rocket is on screen, I will touch a nice fury beaver (we dont have racoons here) and when Groot appears, I will have my hands on wood..
