James Gunn Finally Confirms Directing & Rewriting Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

While he's been in talks for quite some time, Super helmer James Gunn has fashionably announced via Facebook that he's directing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as rewriting its script!

Exactly one month ago, Hollywood trades revealed that Marvel Studios had chosen Super director James Gunn to helm their big risky “space epic,” Guardians of the Galaxy. And while the deal was then in an early phase, Marvel's The Avengers director and Gunn's good friend, Joss Whedon recently confirmed it had prospered.

And now, making use of his official Facebook account, James Gunn has penned a lengthy statement confirming himself as director of the interstellar superhero team-up. In addition, he also confirms that he's rewriting the script that was originally by Nicole Periman before Christopher McCoy did a rewrite also. The statement reads:

“For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique.

I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!”

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

From a screenplay by Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

That was a classy public statement, man.

I'm getting more and more excited for GotG, it took me awhile to warm up to the idea. Now, I think it'll be pretty great. Cant't wait to hear casting reports.

So...Marvel can get Guardians on the big screen before DC can make a Flash, Wonder Woman, or Maritan Manhunter movie made? Step it up, Warner/DC!

If GotG is the lead in film to The Avengers 2 when will we get to see Antman? Will his film fit into Phase 2???

Or will he be properly introduced in another franchise film? Perhaps Avengers 2 itself???
