Marvel's E-I-C 'Axel Alonso' On How The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Comics And Movie Relate

"If the series provides a breadcrumb trail that leads readers to the movie, that’s great, but our job is to make a great comic book — period," says Axel Alonso, who talked to CBR about Guardians of the Galaxy comics and their relationship with the movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy will release next year, while a new comic book featuring the team launched last year. The movies and comic books are usually good compliments to one another. Some of the things we saw in the movies seemed to make it's way into the comic book world, by reshaping a few things. In his weekly column with ComicBookResources, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso touched on how the comics and movies relate to one another in this particular case.

With “Guardians,” Brian is delivering a widescreen cosmic adventure on the comic book page. The Guardians have never been more relevant to the Marvel Universe. If the series provides a breadcrumb trail that leads readers to the movie, that’s great, but our job is to make a great comic book — period. To create great stories featuring Starlord, Rocket, Groot and crew for anyone who wants to read them, before or after the movie hits. Of course, many of us have read the movie script and seen stuff that hasn’t been made public yet, so we know what a treat people are in for. I knew James Gunn before he was tapped to helm the movie — we’ve snowballed story ideas for comics — and I can tell you, he is a major talent with a great love and respect for the comic book medium. He is going to knock this movie out of the park.

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios, is directed by James Gunn from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, and the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The all-star cast includes Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close as Nova Prime. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is slated for August 1, 2014!

i think gunn is gonna knock it out of the park ,i havent seen slither and super but i have heard he has a weird and out there sense of humor and ideas and i think guardians works because of that, guardians should embrace its weirdness and from the looks of it,it is.

James Gunn also is a genuine and huge comic book fan, he constantly on formspring keeps saying to people to read hawkeye by matt fraction because thats his favorite book out right now and he released this tweet that got me real curious and excited.

"Today the performances of @prattprattpratt @zoesaldana @DaveBautista & @Thejudgegunn made me tear up. From my heart, they are all amazing".

that tweet makes me curious in that i think judgegunn who is james gunns brother Sean who has acted in all of his films is motion capturing rocket and bradley cooper is just gonna do the voice

one thing i will give marvel studios credit for is that they are not playing it safe ex,iron man 3 and getting directors they think can give a take on it they find interesting and giving them a lot of free reign to do what they wanna do,which seeing iron man 3,may or may not be a good thing for some people.

NOW,shane black was not personally chosen by kevin feige,RDJ and jon favreau called him up because he had helped on the first movie to direct this and kevin feige agreed to it .

Alan taylor, the russo bros and james gunn were chosen by kevin feige because they gave him a pitch that he liked the most out of the directors that were circling those films so we will see what goes down .

Hopefully this works out. I loved his writing for, Dawn of the Dead but everything else has sucked. Super was meh. But, if Marvel picked him over everyone else then I'll have faith in it. Can't help but be excited though. Captain America: The Winter Solider is still by far my most anticipated solo movie in Phase Two.

the reason shane black was chosen was kevin feige wanted to experiment and show the people that they will take risks and if people dont like em, they dont like em,there is nothing anyone can do about that so thatswhy he agreed to shane black cause if you have watched shane blacks film, that guy does not follow conventional storytelling. Alan Taylor was chosen because of his work on game of thrones,The Russos because they pitched him the whole political thriller angle and Jamesgunn because they wan guardians to embrace its wweirdness but be grounded by the characters etc.

jollem-yeah ,i think a good pitch for incredible hulk 2 would have been mark waids current indestructible hulk run in which bruce banner makes a deal with shield to make inventions, further his research and science while shield can point the hulk in what ever direction they want.

Jollem-i dont like the 2003 hulk film,it was just boring and uninteresting imo,i really like the incredible hulk, joss hwedon said it best ,he said that its hard to do a movie about guy who is trying to stop the thing people came from seeing happening and i can see that.

this cast is so fricking weird, eclectic and awesome,we got benicio del toro as the collector who is a villain in the film and that guy can play a villain like noones business,Karen Gillan as Nebula who i like and think is gonna be great,Lee Pace as THE villain of the film Ronan which again thats a strange choice but hes a gret actor and so many others but whenever i look at the people who are playing our main heroes,we go

Chris Pratt as Star Lord who is gonna kill it imo

Zoe Saldana as Gamora, thats the one i am a little ehh about but we will see

Dave Bautista as Drax,i was worried about him but after seeing him after comic con,i think he is gonna be great

Vin Diesel as Groot,enough said

Bradley Cooper as rocket raccoon, the weirdest one of the bunch imo but i think he is also gonna be good

i hope the chemistry between the team is good

Then they've failed.

When is Star Lord going to wear his helmet again? I'm tired of seeing his generic, blond, hot guy look.

Super is the strangest wtf movie I have seen. It is awful. Although for some reason I think guardians is going to blow everyones mind. Im reading the current run and love it.

I hope they include the bit where after groot gets blown to pieces rocket plants a left over bit of him. Then they get captured and all the weapons and left over piece of groot are in the back ground. Groot regrows just in time and kicks ass and save the guardians!! I AM GROOT :)

A great twist will be when RDJ steps aside and Gwyneth takes over as IronMaiden. That would satisfy all the twist-apologists and then we could move on to other characters
