Steve McNiven Has Been "Tossing Design Ideas Around" With Marvel Studios For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Steve McNiven has redesigned the Guardians of the Galaxy for a new "Marvel NOW!" series and reveals here he has talked with Marvel Studios about creating some unity between the movie and comic.

The Guardians of the Galaxy concept art unveiled at this year's San Diego Comic Con featured costume designs which closely resembled the well-known look of the team in the Marvel Universe. However, next February's "Marvel NOW!" comic book series by All-New X-Men writer Brian Michael Bendis features a complete redesign of each of the characters by artist Steve McNiven. "I'm trying to re-design the whole team here," the writer said of his approach to redesigning the team in a recent interview with Newsarama. "My approach to the designs was to match them to the characters and to update the look. Double-breasted jackets and outer space adventure don't really fit these days." A lot of "Marvel NOW!" has seen the comic book costumes receive looks which are a little closer to the of the movies, and it appears as if there will be SOME similarities between the designs in this series and James Gunn's big screen adaptation. "I have been in touch with the movie studio guys and we are all tossing design ideas around, so hopefully we can have some unity between the movie and comic looks."

I agree with @JerBear. As long as they keep the look for Star-Lord, I'm cool with costume changes for GOTG.

steve mcniven is a great artist.when does the guardians of the galaxy comic book get released?

as for the movie,i want them to keep the mask on starlord but if he doesn't have it in the new series he may not have it in the movie.

Nooooooooo that concept art is amazing. Don't F with it. I don't want a futuristic looking suit on starlord. That's been done to death. Go old school like Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds. That's pretty much starlords character anyway.

I'm not going to hate on Bendis & McNiven's GOTG just yet, I haven't read the book, so for all I know, it'll blow DnA's run out of the water.

...That said, I'd be talking with Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning more than Steve McNiven. He and Bendis might be the current creative team on the series, but it was DnA who launched the Guardians into epicness back in 2008.

@Derpina - I thought Groot always looked like a tree to a degree, maybe those lights are grenades?

...err, just because McNiven is giving his ideas, doesn't mean that the costumes will change completely. Hell, it'll probably be an amalgamation with the costumes being a mix of the classic and modern looks.

And for all the arguments about costume looks, I think I'll overlook any costume liberties if everyone remains in-character.

shut the [frick] up.
you both have nearly nothing to go on.

your argument is about a couple of years premature.
