GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Addresses Star-Lord's Missing Helmet And Jet Boots

Chris Pratt's Star-Lord doesn't don his familiar helmet once in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and writer/director James Gunn has now offered a compelling explanation for its absence. Spoilers follow...

Going back as far as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, superheroes not wearing the masks that hide their secret identities has long been commonplace in the genre. Simply put, it makes no sense for studios to spend millions of dollars hiring Hollywood A-Listers to keep their faces covered up for most of their screen time, and that's something we've seen in the MCU a lot too.

Star-Lord, for example, has only ever sporadically worn his helmet and Chris Pratt doesn't put it on it for even a single scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It's hardly the end of the world, but there are those disappointed not to see it back on screen. Well, writer and director James Gunn has now taken to Twitter to share an explanation after being bombarded by fans asking what the deal is.

After all, had he kept his helmet handy, [SPOILER ALERT] Peter Quill would have avoided that near-death experience in the movie's final battle!

According to Gunn, Star-Lord simply didn't have time to retrieve it when the team left Knowhere! As for his rocket boots, no, those wouldn't have been enough to save the Guardian from the vacuum of space.

As cool as it might have been to see the hero wear his helmet (particularly during that epic one-shot fight scene), it really doesn't negatively impact the movie. Plus, it's become the norm for superhero blockbusters; even the MCU's Spider-Man has fought more with his mask off than on at this stage.

"As heart-wrenching as it is hilarious," we said in our review earlier this week, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s masterstroke and a showcase for both his filmmaking talent and a cast that makes everything about this movie simply awesome. An absolute triumph."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.

I guess that's fair, I still liked 3 the most in this trilogy. Also Mash is the best TV show ever, watch it without the laugh track. This is your yearly reminder lol

I noticed its absence in the movie and didn't quite understand why it was left out. Half expected Gamora to rescue him with it in the end. But quite enjoyed Adam Warlocks redemption and the nod to "The Creation of Adam"
TheOverseer
TheOverseer - 5/8/2023, 5:14 AM
Well the real reason is they forgot to include it.

Origame - 5/8/2023, 5:18 AM
@TheOverseer - yeah. There's no reason this couldn't be mentioned in the movie. Or just have Adam destroy it in the opening action scene.

@TheOverseer - Ego broke the Helmet in Vol. 2 and as I saw pointed out on Twitter it was likely meant to be a permanent change, but then the Russo Brothers decided to give him the same helmet for Infinity War and Endgame.

@BobGarlen - that probably goes back to Gunn’s comment about them doing a couple things he wouldn’t have
BobGarlen

@ShimmyShimmyYA - It's a growing list. But I can't imagine Gunn has any ill will, since they were just filmmakers trying to make the best film they could.

@BobGarlen - oh for sure, it’s just one of those things that comes with being in a shared universe, probably didn’t help that G2 is set before IW and Endgame
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 5/8/2023, 10:26 AM
Set before as in almost immediately following G1

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah, but considering how IW and Endgame turned out, it had to be.

This looks phenomenal.

It will be worth seeing for the Trinity test alone and Hoyte's cinematography.

@kylo0607 - I need to temper my expectations, but I'm really feeling like this might end up being the best film of the year

@kylo0607 - 7/21/23? Is that when the movie's out or when the nuclear bombs drop? I know that sometime in July Putin will have moved his nuclear missiles into Estonia, so it would actually fit.

Ah Nolan, always giving us a heads up on future world events. Good man.
TheyDont
TheyDont - 5/8/2023, 5:36 AM
@ObserverIO - Into Estonia? Really?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/8/2023, 5:49 AM
@TheyDont - I think it was Estonia. I was only really watching the news for the weather, lol, wasn't really paying attention. He's moving them somewhere. Some eastern European country or another. Def July though, he said. So um, duck and cover?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/8/2023, 6:07 AM
@ObserverIO - The only way Putin will drop nukes is if someone actually invades Russia and is about to take them over. Him moving nukes is a power play.

It makes no sense for him to use nukes in any other situation. For one, as soon as he drops even one, Russia will be blasted back to the stone age by several countries.

Another reason is that he's trying to take over Ukraine. Why would he turn the land he wants back into a nuclear wasteland?

And third, if he uses nukes on troops, anywhere else, in Ukraine or any of its surrounding countries, even if he's trying to gain a tactical advantage, again, Putin and Russia would be decimated.

People say Putin is crazy, and he may be. But he's not stupid. In any instance if he drops nukes he's done for. So it would only make sense for him to use them if he was about to lose his country. And this war isn't about taking Russia. It's about defending Ukraine. Ukraine doesn't want to take over Russia. They just want to push Russia back. I don't think anyone is going to invade Russia anytime soon.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/8/2023, 6:14 AM
@ObserverIO - Oh, and he's moving them to Belarus, not Estonia. Lol. I always laugh when I hear Estonia because it makes me think of that Pauley Shore movie Encino Man.

They told all the people that the caveman they are disguising as a normal teenager just moved there from Estonia lol. Such a dumb, but funny movie.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/8/2023, 7:57 AM
@CorndogBurglar - I forgot about Encino Man! I loved that movie, lol.

Mutually assured destruction is the ultimate reason why nobody should ever drop a single nuke on any country that could nuke you back. Because they will. He's probably just flexing. But I hope we don't think he's serious and preemptively strike because then he will have to play his bluff and nuke us anyway.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/8/2023, 8:59 AM
@ObserverIO - No way. We wouldn't pre-emptively drop a nuke. If we were going to get involved physically it would have happened already.

And he'll only drop one if his back is against the wall, his country is being overrun, and he knows he's about to lose. Then it may be a "If I can't win I'm taking you all with me" scenario.

But even that isn't likely because unless he drops a nuke first (which makes no sense) then no one is going to be invading Russia. So he wouldn't be in that kind of situation to begin with.

I noticed. I think Starlord looks awesome in the mask. I much prefer Spider-Man in his mask too. But they pay for these big names, not marketable to put a mask over their faces.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 5/8/2023, 5:32 AM
Yeahhh no. As much as I loved the movie this was pretty hard to not understand. My man has had his helmet from the events of Guardians all the way up until Engame and he "leaves it in his drawer"? wtf lol all they had to do was simply address it in the film.
HOTSHOT
HOTSHOT - 5/8/2023, 5:33 AM
Eh. Feels like a bit of control since they probably just forgot to include it. Doesn't really hurt the movie though.

Plus, in-universe I guess it I could excuse it since the film makes a point that Star-Lord is a wreck at the start of the film who isn't thinking clearly.

He had it with him in endgame.

Chappers
Chappers - 5/8/2023, 6:05 AM
Mehh I'd have preferred to see them back and that fakeout death scene with Quill at the end was one of my only issues with the movie.

His face puffing up like a balloon removed all emotion from the scene and it was resolved after about 10 seconds.
Just a completely unnecessary and brief death-scare
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 5/8/2023, 9:39 AM
@Chappers - I mean that’s how you would die in the vacc of space
Chappers
Chappers - 5/8/2023, 1:47 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - No doubt, but it made the moment goofy and had zero emotional impact for me compared to many other moments in the movie that did

I’ve never liked shoe rockets or jet packs with no way to steer. Falcon/CA has wings, Iron Man has his gauntlet repulsors and even the Rocketeer has that fin on his helmet.
Matchesz
Matchesz - 5/8/2023, 8:58 AM
@minato808 - it’s “space” shoe rockets, nothing needs any explanation when you’re in space space space space
WarMonkey

So he was in bed, Adam attacks, he gets out of bed and grabs his guns, walks literally right past the drawer where his mask is in the small single room and maybe his guns were in there too. Also the way they showed his face puffed up means his cells were frozen which would include his brain, and that means he's dead, dead, dead. He's been freezer burned. And OK his boots are inferior to the rocket backpack, but they are much smaller and easy to carry around and he didn't have the rocket pack either, which probably should have been in their spaceship.

So Gunn makes it worse by making it clear he's no longer half god (little g when Ego is feeling humble) so this scenes bothered me a lot. With that said I've seen the movie 3 times and really quite like the movie a lot!

They did that floating in space shit without a helmet in the first movie.
