GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Confirms He Was Never Going To Include Thor In His Movie

Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Endgame, but filmmaker James Gunn has now confirmed that, no matter what came next, he was never going to include the God of Thunder in his Vol. 3...

Thor first met the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War and later decided to join the team's ranks in Avengers: Endgame. The God of Thunder joining the team was an exciting prospect, but one James Gunn never planned on exploring in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The "Asgardians of the Galaxy" idea has potential, but the decision to have Thor join the team was one Marvel Studios made after Gunn briefly parted ways with Disney.

"They chose to have that ending in editing. And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there," the DC Studios co-CEO tells Rolling Stone. "Endgame came out right after I decided to do Guardians again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in Endgame, and then it came out and then I was like, 'What the f*** am I gonna do?'"

"That’s when [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] told me Taika’s gonna do Thor, and we’ll have the Guardians in it. I said 'Thank God!'"

The filmmaker went on to explain that, no matter what happened between Avengers: Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there was never a version of the story that included the Thunder God.

"To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie. Taika took a bullet for me," Gunn says. "Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor."

Marvel Studios might have hoped to bring the Avenger into the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, but Gunn had this story written for a long time before cameras finally started rolling and clearly didn't have a place for Thor in there.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5.

Good, the character is just a poor joke in thor 4.

@Reginator - Yes...I remember all of that comedy fans loved as opposed to dreary DCEU fare. Thpr has never really been consistent as a character in the MCU in my opinion. Infinity War is probably still the best version pf the character.

Think it worked better with them in Thor 4 anyways. Their short dynamic was fun.

In Thor 4 they're just side characters and don't need a spotlight on them, whereas in Volume 3 the spotlight is on all of them so adding another character in who's arc has to be wrapped up as well would just have been too much.

Good for him. Tell his story and don’t let things that happen in other movies change his plan.

Missed opportunities in both Thor 4 and Guardians v3.
Thor 4 wasted the use of the GOTG. I was looking forward to something a little more than what we got but oh well. It would’ve been nice of Taika to write something a little better for the guardians to do in Thor 4.
It was fun watching the guardians interact with Thor in Infinity War but we get non of that other than a quick goodbye between Thor and the guardians. #mcumissedopportunities

The MCU is falling apart anyway. It's now almost as bad as the DCEU.

Missed oportunity, although in Disney's defense, it was a good ending for Thor to leave Earth with the Guardians.

I kinda liked the idea of Thor spending some more time as a Guardian, but I get why James wouldn't want to include him.

“ Luckily, Thor parted ways with Star-Lord and company during the first few minutes of Thor: Love and Thunder, but if that team-up was any indication, we didn't miss much!”

You can take this paragraph out because it’s opinion and the article is stronger. Plus you repeat this point later in the article anyway.

Although I didn't like Thor love and thunder, I did love where he is left off at the end. Hopefully in the next one he is more mature now that he is a father.

@AmazingFILMporg - Maybe after 2 Waititi movies and many changes, he can ginally mature and act like he did 20 movies ago.

Yet another big mistake the Russo Bros made with Thor. His entire arc in Infinity War went against his arc in Ragnarok. And while Fat Thor worked just fine in Endgame, rather than have him step up and be the real King of New Asgard that they needed, he just gives that away for what? To go find himself? Endgame should have shown him that he didn’t need to find himself, he needed to step up. But no, funnier to just have him go off with the Guardians so that he could have a 5-minute waste of a stint with them before taking what could have been a deeply emotional, meaningful story and instead making unsuitable jokes for two hours. Good job Russos, good job Waititi, good job Gunn.

Directors supporting each other; that's nice. Which we saw more of it, instead of them bashing each other.

I'm honestly glad he didn't. One comedic writer ruining Thor was enough. It's time for that character to get a deep cleansing reboot and recast.
