For the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on home video, director James Gunn sat down with Collider to discuss a number of topics. Of particular interest was the question of whether all future cosmic MCU films would have a similar tone to the Guardians franchise.
The question stems from Gunn's announcement that he would be returning to direct and write Vol. 3, which also coincided with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announcing that Gunn would actually be in charge of the cosmic side of the MCU and deciding what films get made in that arena.
Some Marvel fans feared that meant cosmic characters still to be introduced to the MCU like Nova, Adam Warlock or the Annihilators (more serious in nature), would be getting a comedic makeover, similar to what the Guardians received under Gunn's guidance. Here's what Gunn has to say.
"No, I don't think so. I would hope that [with] the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, every movie has its own unique feel and tone. And so, if it's a James Gunn movie, it's different from a Ryan Coogler movie, which is different from a Taika movie, which is different from a Peyton Reed movie. I think all the movies can be their own genre, they can be their own thing in the same way that if you grew up reading Marvel Comics, all the writers and the artist of the comic books brought very different tones to each of those."
It would appear the tone of these potential films will be determined by whomever is selected as the director. For those of you wanting a Russo brother-esque exerpeince set in the far corners of the MCU, there's still a chance.
