George Raymond Richard Martin is on fire right now. Game of Thrones is a certified television hit, with 13 Emmy nominations. A Dance with Dragons, the fifth of a planned seven novels in the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and went on went on to be #1 on both Publisher's Weekly and USA Today Bestsellers lists. Now, GRRM is set to tackle the horror genre. Mike the Pike Productions, Inc. is set to develop The Skin Trade as a feature film.
Here's the official synopsis of the novella:

"When a string of grotesque killings begins to strike her small city, private detective Randi Wade becomes suspicious. A serial killer is taking the skin of its victims and the grisly murders remind her all too much of her own father's death almost twenty years ago. As the police hit a dead end, Randi goes on a search for answers of her own... But when a close friend suddenly becomes a target, he is forced to reveal a startling secret about himself and Randi is quickly pulled into a dark underworld where monsters exist and prey on the living."

The film will reportedly have a budget of $60-80M and will purse A-list talent for the director's chair and cast.

George R.R. Martin is the author/creator behind HBO's smash success, Game of Thrones, which was recently nominated for 13 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Writing. His work in fantasy has garnered him the title of "The American Tolkien" and was named among the prestigious 2011 TIME 100.

GRRM has done a lot besides ASoIaF. He wrote a lot of episodes for the old Beauty and the Beast and some for the Outer Limits. As for the American Tolkien I think Robert Jordan is much more a long the lines of Tolkien than Martin is. While not as liked by many , the Wheel of Time series is vaster in scope and more similar in tone to the LotRs. Song of Ice and Fire still goes hard as hell though.

that quote is already becoming one of the biggest mistakes ever. the guy from Time who wrote it knew it was going to get quoted a lot and so he took the sensationalize route because its the move to make if youre some unknown reviewer from Time looking to hound some thunder. And i love the asoiaf books, but martin hasnt even finished them. He may never. Until book 7 is in my hands im not making any definitive statements aboyt who is or isnt "the american tolkien"
