We have an update on that long-gestating remake of An American Werewolf in London that may not sit too well with fans of the '80s cult classic: According to Deadline, Jon Landis' son and Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis has been tapped to both write and direct the movie for Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The Walking Dead‘s David Alpert and Robert Kirkman will produce, with Landis senior on board as executive producer.

The original is considered one of the finest horror comedies of all time, showcasing Academy Award-winning special effects that (mostly) hold up to this day, and a terrific balance of humor, scares and heart.

Can Max Landis replicate this for a modern-day retelling? Should he even try? be sure to share your thoughts below.

@BlackStar25 - It'll be a CGI gorefest instead of a practical effect masterpiece.

Max landis can be a hit or miss, some of his work is great (chronicle) some of his other stuff is ehhhh, the most recent thing he wrote and directed didn't do too well critically but I haven't seen it so I will not pass judgement, but it's kinda cool he's picking up a project that belonged too his old man....the problem is it's such a beloved Original. I'm rooting for him though! Anything can be good! And it would be quite something if he could makes something great on the groundwork his father laid!

@MRjordansurf -

I enjoyed Chronicle and thought American Ultra might be a bit funny but it was quite serious and not interesting.

What makes the first such a classic is the masterful practical makeup and effects. You gotta really wonder if this remake will hold its self to the same standards and practices. In an era where cgi is so prevalent and something studios rely on so much, I doubt it. But who knows.
