Marvel TV Shows May Be Set In Same Universe As Movies; More Details On Hulk CGI And Plot!

Confirming that the Hulk of The Avengers will indeed be the same one as the one in the planned TV show, it sounds as if the Green Goliath will definitely be all CGI on the small screen while Kevin Feige also hints at a shared universe...

IGN Movies have compiled some details from New York Comic Con which shed some new light on Marvel's plans for how their live action TV shows will link up with the movies as well as comments from Jeph Loeb and Kevin Feige on all that and more. Below are a few excerpts from their report, but be sure to click on the link below to read it in full.

-Loeb stated that the recent trailer for The Avengers was basically our first glimpse of the TV Hulk.

-Loeb says that Marvel will be pushing the technology to its limit. That apparently means that all the intensive CGI modeling and design work that is being done for the movie Hulk will be recycled for the TV version.

-Loeb says the series is a different take on the Hulk, one that will focus more on the relationship between Betty Ross and Bruce at the very beginning of the Hulk's existence (when Hulk is still unknown to the world at large).

-Now, this shared TV/movie universe idea seems to go against previous statements made by the Marvel brass. So we asked Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about the matter last night. And he, essentially, said it could happen.

Pretty interesting, eh? The small screen adventures of these heroes will serve as a great way of introducing them to audiences and this could ultimately result in the likes of Carol Danvers (who is confirmed to play a role in A.K.A. Jessica Jones) making their way to the big screen! Mockingbird is also thought to have links to the movies in the form of S.H.I.E.L.D! Be sure to share your thoughts on all of this in the usual place.

Focus more on Betty and Bruce's relationship? Why? Why do that?

That is so cool! This could mean not only appearances from RDJ.r and Evans in the show, but opens the doors for other heroes like Luke Cage and Iron Fist :D I am psyched :)

@Intruder Damn, that would be EPIC if they can squeeze in Spider-Man and Wolverine in the Hulk TV show (or some other MCU show). Definitely something Marvel shouldn't miss out on.

Fox/Sony have the live-action rights to their characters, which means that a CGI spidey cannot appear in The Avengers because he's in a live-action movie. That's why they are probably connecting Ultimate Spider Man to the MCU

So wait... does this mean Ruffalo is gonna do TV? That seems impossible. So does that mean we are gonna have ANOTHER new Bruce Banner. And what does that mean for the Hulk in the movies now, is Ruffalo already being written off by Marvel? There seems to be some serious problems with this...

Haha @ Intruder for talking out of his ass and acting like he knows something about all the legal mumbo jumbo in which what rights belong to whom...

But seriously if the Hulk show has an enormous budget and doesn't get the ratings it needs you can bet it wont see a second season. That's how TV works people. Hopefully it takes place in the same universe as the MCU because that would kick this shared universe stuff into high gear. If they don't then I think I'll pass on watching Smallville featuring the Hulk. That idea just doesn't appeal to me at all.

TheSchemer - 10/16/2011, 12:38 PM
@MovieMaster: that's not quite right. Sony has rights to Spiderman. That includes everything Spidey. So we can't see Scarlet Spider or an alternate spidey in a MCU movie at all.

@Intruder Not connecting the television shows to the MCU wouldn't be a missed opportunity. I don't want the TV Shows to be connected to the MCU because this could be a chance to tell original stories without being hampered by continuity restraints. This could mean that they could tell stories for the people who aren't fortunate enough to pay $7.00 for a movie ticket and get caught up in the story or people who would like to see how these characters work in another format. Marvel could make their own live-action Spider-Man television series or X-Men television series. Mark my words Jeph Loeb, DONT TIE THESE TV SHOWS TO THE MCU!

Only one question.... is Ruffalo playing as the hulk? If not, it doesn't really make sense for it to tie in with the movie universe.

This sounds like it's white washing over the Ang Lee Hulk film, because TIH starts as a kind of sequel but it's not, which means with this show, focusing on his earlier life, on him and betty, mean it's a natural prequel to the film?

Or have i missed some dots?

I called this a while ago! Kind of... I said the series should be a prequel to the Incredible Hulk film, which it looks like it will be. Only thing is, it's doubtful Ruffalo will play Banner on the small screen, and even less likely Ed Norton would return for it, so it looks like we may be getting yet another actor for the Green Goliath. Same goes for Liv Tyler as Betty and William Hurt as General Ross.

And this also means they can't use Abomination, the Leader, or the Rulk, who I heard they were interested in using as the villain of the series.

"focus more on the relationship between Betty Ross and Bruce at the very beginning of the Hulk's existence (when Hulk is still unknown to the world at large)"

That's where you need to stop reading. Even if they could do it, Marvel won't tick off Sony and Fox. Especially the same Fox who sued WB over Watchmen at the last minute. If the Hulk TV series makes it to a second or third series you might start seeing the other Avengers but that's it.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 10/16/2011, 1:23 PM
And those Avengers will be recast with TV actors naturally.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 10/16/2011, 1:28 PM
When was the last time you saw Spiderman in a X-men cartoon?
AC1
AC1 - 10/16/2011, 1:31 PM
@Intruder,you're right about them having no power over TV. Sony, FOX, etc, only have the Motion Picture rights. Marvel still have all the TV rights, which is why they're still able to make Spider-Man cartoons, or use characters like the Fantastic 4 in the upcoming second season of Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes.

So if Marvel wanted to use their characters in the live action Hulk series, or any other live action series, they're within their rights to do so. And should the series link with the MCU, then there's nothing the other studios can do, as linking the continuity has nothing to do with legal rights, since there's no official legal document saying they're part of the same series, it's just the opinion of the creators.

In fact, as long as they're careful about it, Marvel films can even reference characters they dont own, in the same way Sony's Spider-Man film referenced Superman a few times, and Spider-Man 2 mentioned Doctor Strange. So we may not see any big screen team ups any time soon, but there's room for some kind of crossover on the small screen. I think...
AutobotCommander84
AutobotCommander84 - 10/16/2011, 1:33 PM
@Intruder Guillermo Del Torro specifically stated that his Bruce Banner will be a man in his early 20's and that the show will feature an origin story to differentiate this from the films, if Marvel suddenly tries to make the show connected to the MCU, the entire timeline will be filled with continuity errors since Banner would be in his early 20's yet in the films, he was in his late 30's and early 40's. Not having these connected to the MCU would give them the chance to re-tell stories in a different way without feeling repetitive and not having continuity restraints meaning that the writers could do whatever they want and not have to say, "We want to do a different version of Abomination's origin and have him fight the Hulk but we can't because they already did that in the movie.", I would definitely wan't to see a different version of the Abomination than in the films, maybe incorporating elements of his original design into a design based on the film's with the bony protrusions erupting from his skin.
