2008's IRON MAN: Original Design For Tony Stark's Car; Plus Unused Gadgets

In Jon Favreau's Iron Man, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was seen cruising around in an Audi R8, but the original design for Tony's car, created by Harald Belker, was much more interesting.

Harald Belker, a former designer for Porsche and Mercedes-Benz has become a leading concept artist in the entertainment industry. He has desinged props, but it's his magnificent work on vehicles that has separated him from the pack. We here at ComicBookMovie.com would most recognize his vehicles designs from Tron: Legacy, Minority Report, and of course Joel Schumacher's masterpiece, Batman & Robin.

"This could have been my last big-time movie car, since the trend is taking over of having car companies place their product in films. Inspired by the mask part of the suit costume, Tony Stark had to build his own super car. We were ready to build when the plug was pulled and Audi gave the money the producers needed to write it out of the script. Too bad - it would have been a b****ing toy."

"Finished with the car, I jumped over to the suit. Phil Saunders had been working on it for a while, and I was handed some little pieces that needed exploring - mostly things that were under the suit and popping out of it. Here's a sample of a how small rocket launcher can be activated out of the thigh of the suit."

"The mask, probably inspired by Darth Vader's, needed lots of little electronic gadgets and cameras behind the shield. I was bummed to see that it didn't make it into the movies."

As a bonus I also included his designs for the Batmobile and Robin's motorcycle, "The Redbird."

That's a nice design, but ridiculous if it made it into the movie. "Jarvis, to the Ironmobile!"

Fugly. Belongs in the Target action figure aisle as "Iron Man's Car That You Never Actually See Him Drive."

The car looks cool as a concept but would have looked cheesy as hell in the movie.

why would tony stark have driven a car that looks like an iron man suit when his identity was secret until the final moments of the movie?

Not sure about the sketch since these blueprints are generally abstract and pretty different from the actual vehicle. I'd say the finished product - if made into reality - would be amazing.
But man... R8 is gorgeous. GORGEOUS.

Thank God for the Audi R8.

And the additional weapons look cool, but I have no problem with them being scrapped from the final product.

About the mask's inside, now that's indeed a shame that we didn't get a full look at it in the movie.

Have I ever mentioned about how - minus the neon lights - the Batman & Robin Batmobile is actually pretty cool?

Better as a toy for kids than in the movie.

Definitely would have been bad for the first film but now that we've seen the different stages in the armors and seen several ways it can be applied to him (Mark V suitcase and Mark VII rocket pod) maybe a car could be an interesting way to introduce the Hulk buster armor. I know there's a lot of room to mess that up. It would have to hide all aspects of the car (tires, glass, interior) to keep it from being to Transformers like. If done correctly though I think it could be pretty sweet.

Actually, the inside of the mask DOES appear very briefly when Tony puts on the Mark II mask for the first time. It's a 1st person from Tony's perspective. He puts the plate on, then, all the lights come on and we see the gorgeous HUD graphics for the first time.
