CONFESS, FLETCH Star John Slattery Reflects On Playing Howard Stark And Shares MCU Return Hopes (Exclusive)

Talking to us about Confess, Fletch, John Slattery reflects on his time playing Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and confirms he hopes to return after last appearing in Avengers: Endgame.

Mad Men star John Slattery first played Howard Stark in Iron Man 2. Dominic Cooper would later play a younger version of the S.H.I.E.L.D. founder in Captain America: The First Avenger, but Slattery was then given the opportunity to reprise the role for flashbacks in Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War.

Perhaps his most impactful appearance, however, came in Avengers: Endgame. Travelling back in time alongside Steve Rogers, Tony Stark got to reunite with the father he would later lose at the hands of the Winter Soldier.

An argument could be made that the 2019 movie was a good place for us to bid farewell to Howard, but as such an instrumental part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we'd be shocked if he doesn't appear again (his image, for example, was seen as recently as in Spider-Man: No Way Home on the wall of Peter Parker's high school).

Talking to us about his role in Confess, Fletch, Slattery looked back on his time in the MCU and confirmed he hopes to return should the opportunity present itself.

"I had such a good time and every one was different. You know, it's not strictly improvisational, but a lot of it is written on the day. I'm sure you've heard stories of what that's like and it's really exciting to work with the Russo Brothers and Downey...it was a blast."

"So yeah, would I go back? In a minute," the actor confirms in the video above. "I'm glad...those movies have had such an impact. They're really fun to do."

Looking to the future of the MCU, it's hard to say where Howard could fit into that. However, with the Multiverse now at play, it would be quite easy for a villainous Variant of Tony's father to make his presence felt and cause all manner of chaos (how could would it be to see him suit up?).

We'll have to wait and see, but for now, you can see Slattery reunite with Mad Men's Jon Hamm in Confess, Fletch. The long-awaited reboot of the popular movies starring Chevy Chase, this fresh take arrives in theatres, On Digital, and On Demand on September 16, 2022.

I’d like to see Howard Stark show up in a Time Travel Steve Rogers film.

@slickrickdesigns - think it would make for a fun What If episode. It's not really a What If scenario, but Uatu can still tell it like one I guess: What if Steve Rogers finally made good on his promise? With the promise being his dance with Peggy.

Guess that would put the actual What If at the end of the episode though

The Endgame scenes between him and Tony were great although I expected more of a shocked reaction to the hig unlehe felt a connection to Tony that he just couldn’t explain such as when he wondered if he had ever met him before. Those were touching scenes.

@RolandD - that moment Made me tear up a bit, Tonys finding out his dad really loved him after all this years believing he hated him was a good payoff i didnt think i needed but was so well incorporated that i loved it

@Dannywest - Well said. Tony being a dad opened them up in a way it might not have turned out so touching. I mean it’s pretty obvious but sometimes I like to state the obvious. Lol

@RolandD - it might be obvious but sometimes small Moments like that one gets Lost among the Avengers assemble or cap lifting Thor hammer

@RolandD @Dannywest - Endgame gave use quite a few of those moments that were really great character moments. They really incorporated that small stuff really well

@bkmeijer1 @Dannywest- Agree with both of you, absolutely. I still wish we had lost so many OG Avengers in that movie but it was all handled well.

@RolandD - had or hadn't? I think they did in a satisfactying enough way. It all made sense within the story too, because it wasn't just for shock value. Half of the population dissappeared, abd to bring them back half of the OGs had to dissappeared/die instead.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them show up again in Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars.

One of my favourite parts of Iron Man 2. Dead for almost 20 years and still taking me to school.

I kinda hope they do a movie set anywhere in the 60s, 70s or 80s with young version of characters like Howard, Hank, Isiah, Nathaniel Richards (Reeds' dad) and Red Guardian.
