Willem Dafoe Laments JOHN CARTER Box-Office Perfromance As Film Comes To Blu-ray And DVD

John Carter hit Blu-ray and DVD shelves yesterday and actor Willem Dafoe reflected on the "baffling" box-office performance of the Disney/Pixar film which he calls "misunderstood."

John Carter was a film which in many ways, suffered from an unprecedented amount of bad press and industry back-lash. This is a subject that's been dissected numerous times before so I'll avoid that here. Instead, we'll hear from actor Willem Dafoe about what he thinks derailed the film and what he thinks about a possible sequel---

On the film's inability to capture a wide-spread audience:

Dafoe: "You don’t like to publicly lament disappointments too much, but I’m still kind of scratching my head over it. For me, I thought ‘John Carter’ really captured something. It was very pure in its approach. It was classical. It wasn’t hip and cool. It was really from the source, and I appreciate that.”

A possible reason why:

Dafoe; "“In my experience, sometimes a movie just hits at the wrong time, gets the wrong press, or gets the wrong representation, and it gets misunderstood. Sometimes it’s hard for people to really decide, too. There’s so much reporting about the business and that other stuff, that they really get distracted by some of those things, and then it influences some of the weaker-willed people to not have their own opinion.”

On the likelihood of a sequel:

Dafoe: "It sure doesn’t seem like [there will be a sequel], which is a shame. This was the set-up for what could be a great series of movies. . . I was looking forward to doing a sequel, though, because I know something of where the story goes and the character of Tars Tarkas. He’s big, and the relationship with John gets more intense.”

There are some who point the blame at lead Taylor Kitsch and now have the relatively unsuccessful Battleship to support their argument. Others will point the finger at a fairly large budget or at a change at the top of the studio regime. Regardless, I believe John Carter deserved better and hopefully Disney can decide to continue on with some changes to the cast and budget. What do you guys think, should Disney try again with John Carter?

John Carter is a 2012 Disney-made epic science fiction film featuring John Carter, the heroic protagonist of Edgar Rice Burroughs' 11-volume Barsoom series. The film marks the centennial of the character's first appearance in 1912.

Former Confederate captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is mysteriously transported to Mars ("Barsoom") where he becomes part of a conflict between the various nations of the planet, whose leaders include Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Carter takes it upon himself to save Barsoom and its people.

The film is the live-action debut of director/writer Andrew Stanton and is co-written by Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. It is produced by Jim Morris, Colin Wilson, and Lindsey Collins, and scored by Michael Giacchino.

Upon release, John Carter received a mixed critical reception and performed poorly at the domestic box office, although it did show strength overseas, particularly in Russia where it set box office records. Disney attributed the $160 million swing from profit to loss in its Studio Entertainment division in the quarter ending March 2012 "primarily" to the performance of John Carter.

This movie was really good. I honestly think they released it at the wrong time of the year. 1st quarter is always a bad time for big CG movies.

It was just as good as Prince Of Persia.

They can make a sequel for 150 to 175, but they won't make their money back unless they market the movie correctly. If they would have eluded to the fact this story spawned modern science fiction they would have had more luck.

If it had better marketing and a proper title ('of Mars' at the end of that 'John Carter' would have let people know what it was a little more clearly) it would have done better. Did they advertise the legacy of John Carter? No. They advertised some odd movie that looked alot like Phantom Menace. Lots of failure went into getting this movie on people's minds before release.

Haven't seen it (busy with work and school) but it bugs me that they took the 'of Mars' out of the title.

'John Carter' sounds like a weepy drama about terminal illness for someone not familiar with the premise. I'm glad to see most of my fellow comicbookers liked it.

They needed toys and other marketing tie-in's for buzz. Would have been a great line of toys.

Also, the film should have started on Earth. We would find out what's going on as carter finds out.

There's no way that this is Kitschs fault. Battleship would've been received the exact same way if someone elae played the lead...horrible script.

It was a great movie. I want a sequel. I just think they gave it a lackluster title, marketed it poorly, and screwed up on the promotion part. But the movie itself was awesome!

I loved this movie. In fact, I'm headed out right now to buy the BluRay. I sure wish they would give it a a sequel, but I'm not expecting one. This was not any of the cast's fault. Disney blew it with this one. Terrible title, terrible marketing, lack of product, fast food & toy tie in promotions. Almost as if they wanted it to fail. Too bad. At least we have one really good movie.

Honest to goodness, before I ever saw a trailer or poster, I thought it was a historical biopic or something. John Carter sounds like a historical figure's name. I mean, yeah, now that I know what it is, that was a pretty dumb thought, but still, I can not be the only person on the planet that thought that. Reading the other article about it, had they played it up as the story that inspired Star Wars and many major sci-fi films, I think people would have been much more receptive to it. I feel bad for Andrew Stanton. He is one of my favorites. It's gotta be hard to come back from such a disastrous flop.

Disney's marketing department killed this movie before it was ever released- from dropping Mars from the title to that awful, head-scratching first trailer...a shame.

I enjoyed the movie a lot! Gonna pick it up tonight on the way home. I agree with @Pux, a large majority of the blame should lie with Disney and their marketing of the movie. Was it the greatest, no. Was it as bad as people were making it out to be, not at all. Highly under rated!

Once again, a super awesome story that we will never see its true potential ever again...I mean, green lantern's story is epic, but we can never see that again, not in a long time, fine, but this? This movie is above average! I just don't get it...I mean, for example, game of thrones is very famous and pretty epic, but the first book is all set-up, suppose we didn't have a season 2 then, wouldn't that be a shame? (blackwater and all that? You tell me!)

and disney put massive money which mean too much risk on movie like this, its not big brand and not well known to public like star wars or spider-man

if its success it will make $500 millions max
but with its budget they expected this movie to be like POC and gains billions of $

its disney own fault

I just watched it last night and I really enjoyed it. I feel like the shortcomings of the movie itself fell on the director in the editing room. I wanted to strangle Stanton by the end for his repeated random scene jumps. Plus I feel like there had to be better versions of some of the scenes between Carter and Dejah. Another problem is that he treated the entire thing like everyone should already know all about this lore. My wife didn't know what the hell the 9th ray was, thought Helium was another planet at first, what the hell Woola was, or why John was suddenly a superman on Mars. Personally, I don't see how any hardcore comic fan couldn't have come across these books before and I'd even say the series is required reading for sci-fi and fantasy fans... be like calling yourself a collector and not having a copy of "A Contract with God"... but we aren't all hardcore comic readers/collectors.

Then of course is the marketing argument. Who the [frick] is John Carter to Joe-Shmoe. The title alone could've done wonders just by adding, "and the Princess of Mars"

I guess I echo the statement of Willem here mostly.
