Karl Urban On Playing Dredd

Urban caught up with Empire magazine to chat about stepping into the mighty boots of Mega City One's toughest Judge, Dredd..

Karl Urban is no stranger to sci fi/fantasy type roles. He made big impacts as Eomer in The Lord Of The Rings Movies and more recently as Dr "Bones" McCoy in Star Trek. Now in about ten weeks Urban will head to South Africa to shoot the new Judge Dredd movie, simply titled: Dredd. Talking exclusively to Empire, the Kiwi actor explains how this new take will differ from the previous Stallone effort..

"I think somewhere along the line Stallone's film was a missed opportunity. As soon as he took his helmet off the enigma was blown. Our film is going to be darker in tone, and we've got the benefit of modern filmmaking and technology to help us."

So with the darker tone, can we expect a bit more of the comics satirical edge?

"I'm hesitant to define it before it's actually been made [but] Alex Garland has done a fantastic job of writing a script that's faithful to the world Wagner created, yet completely fresh in its execution."

And how does he think he will fare going through the entire movie without taking off Dredd's iconic helmet?

"You're taught as an actor that if you take away the eyes you have to think about what you're left with - there's the voice; there's body language. How a character does what he does speaks volumes. So those are the tools I will have to employ."

Garland's plot has been described as a kind of futuristic 16 Blocks. I'm not sure I like that comparison very much! But I'm still very optimistic that Urban will knock it out of the park as old stoney face.

If Weller could do it as Robocop, i don't see what's the big deal with not seeing every actor's face in full. But Hollywood have their own twisted and retarded views on this.

Mr. Burns (and Smithers) dig this!

I really can't wait for this. However it turns out, its going to be a whole lot better than the trash heap that Stallone was in.

But if he even takes his helmet off for a nanosecond...I'll hate it.

The movie 16 Blocks was awesome, a seriously underrated movie.

Tea & Jazz- True but not as much. In Dredd, you could actually tell that Stallone HAD to show his face. In the Robocop films, it just seemed natural, for the sake of the script. Not the actor's.

hugo weaving didn't show his face in v for vendetta and the movie turned out great and everybody knew it was him. so it is up to urban to make himself recognizable

Judge Dredd has never really been a character that I've had a lot of interest in (in fact I've never even read a comic book featuring him) but the more I hear about the movie, the more excited I get! :) I just hope it doesnt end up like Jonah Hex or The Losers! (although the latter was based on something written by the same idiot who is currently [frick]ing up Daredevil so I guess it never had much of a chance, lol!)

Don't get me wrong, I liked 16 Blocks, I just don't think a comparison favours a Dredd movie. It suggests its gonna be a fairly straightforward chase/action flick.

@Ror if it's like 16 Blocks where Dredd is constantly doing something it gives more reason why he can't take off his helmet. If it was something like Punisher War Zone(No offense to Karl, but Ray Stevenson would've been my immediate choice for Dredd, Maybe Thomas Jane, they both have really good voices) you could find excuses for him not to, and if you did it so that they take days upon days to solve the case it's going to be hard to find excuses for him not to remove his helmet to audience members who don't know Dredd at all or just from the 90's Movie(Which if you think about it as an action movie set in the future and not a Judge Dredd adaptation, it's pretty decent)

Dredd isn't supposed to take it off that's why they're not doing it. It's in his character to be on watch at all times and never be off-duty. Dredd is a GREAT character, and Urban will do a great job playing him...

I just don't see him as Dredd, unless they do some prosthetic work on his chin. Dredd's signature feature is his strong square chin and that is all that shows of him, so I will have a tough time watching that pointy chin sticking out from his helmet, regardless of how good an actor he is.

I just don't see him visually being Dredd. Though, a lot of things will probably be subject of change here after that awful Judge Dredd in from 1995.

Shaman, I am pretty sure that the creator of Robocop said he was heavily influenced by Judge Dredd when he was putting robocop together. I agree with what Urban said, the Stallone movie was a lost opportunity, the character is a great character. It seems that they are handling him well here and I don't see why Dredd won't be a big surprise movie hit. the source material is practically unlimited and they could make a great franchise out of this. Or, alternatively they could open the doors to other possible 2000ad character movies, I would definately be interested in a Slaine or Rogue Trooper or Strontium Dog movie. Fingers crossed, Urban seems enthusiastic about the movie and since he claims to be a huge fan then hopefully it will deliver.
