VIDEO: Karl Urban Has A Message For DREDD 2 Hopefuls

We heard recently that "discussions were taking place" when it came to a sequel to the much loved DREDD, and now the man behind the helmet (Karl Urban) has put together a video message for fans, updating us on the progress. Check it out after the jump.

Though pretty well received by critics and the public alike, Alex Garland's DREDD failed to make a big enough impact at the box office to warrant a sequel..and most of us thought that was that. But great DVD/Blu-ray sales gave the movie a new lease of life, and suddenly it looked like a (slim) possibility. Now the official "Make a DREDD sequel" petition has over 100,000 signatures, and the actor Karl Urban has put together the following video message thanking fans for their continued support. He promises that "we’re working very very hard to bring you
Dredd 2".

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Love the first Dredd. It was one of very few movies that I thought was actually enhanced by a 3D viewing too. Hope this happens, I'd like to see some of the more crazy aspects of the Dredd universe.

I think DREDD is a little overrated to be honest. However I really do hope that a sequel gets made for the hardcore fans yearning to explore the world of his other antagonists.

It might end up being a DVD sequel. You know...like the scorpion king 2

...and...3

If Dredd 2 features the Dark Judges and they market it correctly, it'll be boss!

That's awesome. I wasn't too big of a Dredd fan but this is just cool to see. I hope it works! I'd watch a sequel for sure

If a sequel does get greenlit, it will probably be working with a budget even more modest than the first one. Still stoked at the possiblity to see Dredd kick more ass

I saw 5 minutes of this film on Netflix and was tempted to hurl my television out of a window. Don't make a sequel.

liked the movie a lot. The thing I loved the most was that he never took his helmet off. Something so cool about a big budget movie never showing the face of their star.

Damn that movie was garbage from top to bottom. 2nd worst comic adaptation since Batman and Robin.

Dredd took down avon barksdale and cersei lannister in one movie. If that doesnt earn you a sequel, what will?
