DC FILMS UNIVERSE
7 Signs It Is On The Right Track By JEREMIUS
The DCEU, DC's answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a rocky start to say atleast. WB wanting it to start with Green Lantern which we all know what happened next. Then, Man Of Steel came out, marking the start to the DCEU. But it did go through it's share of critisism and controversy. The release of Batman V Superman didn't help the universe either. It was panned and didn't perform as expected. While it was loved by some, the movie didn't lay out the plans for the universe as well as it thought it would.
With most of Superman's supporting characters dead and himself buried plus the psycho Batman who just kills whoever he sets his eyes upon. Zack Snyder's vision is a mess of darkness, comic inspiration and a not-so conherent plot. Suicide Squad is the only one who can help this universe's foundation. With all the recent news and changes on the behind-the-scenes department of WB, which allowed DC to have it's own division DC Films. Does that mean the DCEU is back on track? Let's see why?
1. It's Got The Right Man Behind The Wheel
With the announcement that Geoff Johns would take over the DC Films division over at Warner Bros - i have to admit, i rejoiced. Geoff understands these characters and with the awesome launch of DC's Rebirth, this man is the one that should lead the DCEU going forward. WB should have let Johns take the wheel a long time ago. He's written some of the best DC stories like his entire GL run, Flashpoint, Earth 1-Batman and Justice League and DC Rebirth, to name a few.
Nobody really understood the decision of WB to put Zack Snyder in the lead of the DCEU, he wasn't qualified, and his effects on the universe are deeply seen. I am sorry, but i want a modern Superman movie that has some good damn fun in it, for christ's sake.
2. It's Starting To Give More Freedom
With the news of a Harley Quinn solo venture, it's starting to feel like WB is giving more freedom with it's DC Films. The Harley Quinn solo film is gonna be filled with DC superheroines and female villains, with Margot Robbie is producing and directing (?) the currently un-slated film and this is so awesome, as it shows that an actor has completely fallen in love with the character they're playing. That's not where the freedom ends, though. it continues with Ben Affleck's The Batman.
Ben Affleck will be given complete freedom with the solo flick, together with DCEU Kevin Feige, Geoff Johns. It gets better, as it's an original story, taking slight inspiration from the comics, and with them betting on a relatively unknown director who got some spotlight with 2015's DOPE (Which you should really, really check out) Rick Famuyiwa, who's directing The Flash and basing his script on a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and which is a big film for WB, considering the character is the DC equivalent of Spider-Man and with the TV show giving him extra popularity, it should be noted that the Flash is one DC film you need to look forward to.
3. It Let Go Of It's Demented 'Creator'
Let's just accept it, Zack Snyder is a man who should just be out of Hollywood. He is a guy who's just this bad-boy 40 year old. Watchmen might be his only good film, Man Of Steel was my favorite, but his decisions on it were questionable and considering his recent comments on a BRUTAL Batman scene he would like to do. That's not the words of a Batman fan, huh- Hell, those aren't the words of a sane man. But look, Zack Snyder is a man who likes big, cool action scenes and that's okay- We all like our healthy dose of big, brutal and dumb but fun action once in a while- but sometimes, too much can ruin a film. While Man Of Steel launched the DCEU, most of the complaints carried over to BVS.
Batman V Superman has been critisized for it's non-sensical and weak story and plot- but man, the action scenes were amazing (*cough warehouse scene *cough). But, unfortanutely for Zack, movies need substance, and not just throwing stuff at the wall, and seeing what sticks.
4. They Have THE Batman
When announced, the decision to let Ben Affleck play Batman was met with such an uproar, it was unbelievable. I didn't like it, but after reading about it, afterwards, i had this feeling that he just fits. When i saw the first images, my mind was blown. The suit was magical, straight of the comics. One thing, this situation is a bit like Cinderella's shoe. I had this thing where if an actor wore the cowl and it fit perfectly, then he's THE Batman and as you can see, Ben rocks that cowl and cape, man. He is such an amazing Batman.
Scary, tactical, funny, brooding and a commanding presence as Batman and and an amazing Bruce, as he is low-profile and gets the act of a wild, but calmucating playboy, just right. With The Batman (that title needs to stay) coming out in 2018, even though it's not entirely confirmed, come on, we all know WB wants to capitalize on the acclaim of Batfleck soon, but letting Ben do the movie right.
5. WB Is Really Giving Some Love To These Films
WB is apparently happy with Suicide Squad and made some crazy but awesome-sounding decisions with rumours pointing that WB is moving forward with spin-offs focusing on SWKAD members like Captain Boomerang, Deadshot etc. While the Harley Quinn movie is already in development the rumour points out that her puddin' The Joker (Jared Leto) may or may not get his own solo film.
That's one hell of a commitment on a film that has not even been released or gotten some preview reviews. But movie companies do atleast know that they've got a good thing going and maybe that's the case with WB and it's Suicide Squad decisions. Plus, WB also plans to do Suicide Squad 2 with Ayer and most of the cast returning. Damn, the bad guys did do good, huh?
6. They Let The Women Shine
WB made a smart decision with doing a Wonder Woman movie, since it should have happened a long time ago, considering how great of character she is and how inspiring to women, she is. Feminism has been blown out of porpotions these days, but Wonder Woman is a true feminist icon and a great character. With Gal Gadot being an awesome Diana in BVS and her solo film looking to be pretty lit; we should all be happy that WW is finally getting her movie time to shine.
Plus, with the Harley Quinn solo film also being rumoured to be a Birds Of Prey film, DC has beat Marvel to commiting to female-led supehero movies. Let's hope Gal did an awesome honor to the character in her solo film.
7. They Are Trying Offbeat Ideas
You're probably saying 'oh, but Marvel beat DC in doing offbeat superhero movies and it payed off' i am aware of that, thank you. But Marvel didn't go until Phase II to try those risky and offbeat ideas, with Guardians Of The Galaxy and Ant-Man. This is the DCEU's third film, Suicide Squad is quite the gamble and risk. It's an offbeat idea, which is lucky to have the Joker to get the mainstream audience interested.
Not only that, but the Shazam movie is kind of risky since Shazam isn't that big of a character but Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's role as Black Adam in the film certainly helps the film in potentially succeding AND the Booster Gold and Lobo movies that are being developed and talked about in WB. Those are quite the risks, huh?
