Zack Snyder is a filmmaker with a body of work that people either seem to love or hate, but one odd criticism of his movies is that they tend to have a ring-wing leaning subtext.
In Man of Steel, Jonathan Kent pushed his son to put himself before the needs of others, while Snyder depicted 300's Spartans as freedom fighters rather than the "might-makes-right" society they really were. Those are a couple of examples, but most telling appears to be the director's intention to adapt Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, a beloved story in many right-wing circles.
Snyder has even said that he doesn't believe the current political climate would allow him to make the movie, and during an interview with The Guardian, he was asked outright if those apparent right-wing undertones are deliberate (and a reflection of his political beliefs).
"I vote Democrat! I’m a true lover of individual rights," Snyder said. "I’ve always been a super-strong advocate of women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose, and I’ve always been surrounded by powerful women. And, of course, I’m a huge advocate for the rights of all ethnicities and every walk of life. I would say I’m a pretty liberal guy."
"I want to make sure everyone’s heard and everyone feels included. I don’t have a right-wing political agenda. People see what they want to see. For me, that was not certainly the point."
The Justice League and Army of the Dead director was clearly keen to set the record straight here, though these comments (as innocent as they may be) run the risk of upsetting some of his fans.
Army of the Dead is now streaming on Netflix.
