Director Brad Peyton Reveals Why Warner Bros. Put The Breaks On LOBO

Before he was cast as Black Adam in Shazam, it appeared as if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was being lined up to take on the role of Lobo. However, the movie fell apart, and its director Brad Peyton talks here about why it didn't happen and whether or not it ever will...

Lobo was in development at Warner Bros. for years, first with Guy Ritchie attached to direct, and later Brad Peyton. It was widely reported that Dwayne Johnson was going to play the fan-favourite character, but now that he's attached to star as Black Adam in Shazam, it's clear that it isn't happening. When Superhero Hype caught up with Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) recently, they asked him to explain why it never happened. "I think what’s happening with DC is that they have prioritized what they need to make first in order to kind of lay the foundations for the DC Universe," he revealed. "This is what I believe is happening just from what they’ve been taking about. They’re talking about Justice League, Batman v Superman, and going into Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. Those are kind of the pillars of that universe."

It sounds like the odds were always stacked against the movie anyway, as the San Andreas helmer went on to reflect on the issues he went through in trying to get a green light for Lobo. "It’s one of those things where, creatively, you and I get it, but there’s a lot of people that don’t quite get that. It’s a real uphill battle to talk people into spending a lot of money to do things correctly… I was really happy with the script, [though]. I talked with Dwayne about it. Joel Silver and I had a really amazing meeting about it. I did a rewrite of the script and was really, really excited for it. In their estimation, though, he wasn’t one of those main guys… That’s fair enough." Those comments emphasise how Warner Bros. is going about building their DC Cinematic Universe in comparison to Marvel, and Peyton added: "I think that, to do any kind of comic book universe correctly, you do need to establish, ‘Here’s the tone. Here’s the main people.’ Then we can grow offshoots from there. With Marvel, they’re now doing smaller characters like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. They obviously had to start, though, with their big guns and set up The Avengers. I kind of feel like that’s where DC is now. They’re setting that team up."

Will Lobo ever happen? Peyton remains optimistic. "I think there’s going to be a really amazing time for Lobo and I think people are going to realize, certainly once they revisit it, what they’re sitting on. But you never know. I’m really happy with the project and where we got it and fingers crossed it comes to fruition at some point." Would you guys like to see a Lobo movie or are Warner Bros. making the right decision by focusing on their A-List DC Comics superheroes?

Lobo isn't an interesting character or unique enough of character to hold his own movie.

I can think about a bunch more lesser known DC characters that would make for unique and great stand alone movies.

Not the biggest fan of the Rock but I think he would have been perfect for the role.

The Main Man would make a ton of money. Could be very GOTG or Kingsman esque.

makes absolutely no sense.

dc has this big list of characters to use for movies. so naturally. first you want to make a lobo movie right?

hey lets make a [frick]ing cyborg movie instead cause people like ironman.

wb should just sell the live action rights to all characters besides batman and superman cause they are the only ones wb cares about.

I want to thank this guy for admitting that DC is in its inception and establishing the universe. Anyway... [frick] this I want LOBO hahahA. I hope he's set up in superman sequels soon or something. He can be such a badass character. Like Thr winter soldier of this universe. An intergalactic version lol

I LOVE Lobo in Bisley/Giffen's hands, the books were just violent and weird enough to be great, but it never was a "mainstream" type of character imo

I think lobo would make an excellent supporting character in a space centric film. if my dream Green lantern film ever gets made that involves the corps investigating space criminals he would make such a great addition as a lone wolf boba fett type character

I like Lobo just as much as the next guy, but come on. He really does not need is own solo movie. There are many other DC properties (outside of the Big 7/8 JL characters) that could arguably hold there own movie better than Lobo.

Just throw Lobo in a superman movie as a villain the first half, team up second half of the flick. That is all Lobo is due.

It's absolutely asinine to insinuate a weird, exotic, C-list character should be made into a movie, without first establishing the foundation of the universe in which he dwells on the absolute periphery of.

That is an absolute recipe for failure & disaster, & it's one that's been tried before. For that matter, it's the very thing Marvel avoided from the very beginning. Ant-Man & GOTG would be moot points, if it were not for the foundation that they deliberately set, which was the Avengers & their individual members.

But when DC does it, its somehow a terrible thing. There is no reason whatsoever that Lobo should even be on the table, RIGHT NOW. Not to say that a Lobo wouldn't make for a fun & interesting movie, but given that we fully know what DC's plan is, then Lobo is completely irrelevant at the time.

@KevinFeigePGA Metal Men can be incorporated within Cyborg. In fact, that movie can be crucial as it open possibilities for OMAC, Brother Eye various alien tech such as the Nth Metal, Scarab and even the watchtower.
