Zack Snyder's Justice League hit HBO Max in March after fans spent years pleading with Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. Now, those same fans have moved on to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, but could the former hashtag be resurrected for...Sucker Punch?
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the filmmaker doubled down on his hopes for a director's cut of his 2011 movie.
"[Sucker Punch] was the first time where I really faced, like, a true radical restructuring of the film for it to be more commercial," he says in the video below. "And there is a director's cut of that movie that has yet to be released. I'll say that out loud."
The movie didn't receive the warmest of responses from critics (it also bombed at the box office), with the sexualised depiction of its female characters particularly problematic for some. However, Snyder addressed that head on in this interview, claiming he was setting out to critique the kind of sexism he was accused of depicting.
"It's a protest movie in a lot of ways. It's a movie about genre," Snyder said. "I was asked at the time 'Why did you dress the girls like that?' and I'd always go 'I didn't dress them like that, you did.' I always saw it as an indictment of, in some ways, popular culture. I think at the time I was criticized for it being the opposite, like, some sort of sexist rant. It was fun to make and I still love it to this day."
There doesn't appear to be a huge demand for more Sucker Punch, but if you're looking to use that #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag again, then you now have a new movie to campaign for...
