POLL: Is Zack Snyder Right About Marvel Studios And ANT-MAN?

Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder used terms like "flavor of the week" to describe what Marvel Studios is doing with characters like Ant-Man. Is he right? Are the Marvel films hastening the comic book movie genre towards its own demise?

When asked to comment on Steven Spielberg's recent comments that comic book movies will soon go the way of the Western movie, director Zack Snyder made comments that shook up fan boys around the world.  Specifically, his statement likening Ant-Man to "flavor of the week" material that will lead to the genre's demise has caused a lot of debate.  There are more than a few comic book enthusiasts who have long railed against the Marvel Studios formula, calling it generic and cookie-cutter.  Whereas two years after Man of Steel, the world is still talking about the climactic showdown between Superman and General Zod.  As a counterpoint, how many people are still talking about Thor: The Dark World?  On the other hand, Marvel is now  a box office powerhouse, whose name alone guarantees hundreds of millions. And while some of their films may not leave a lasting impression, at this point, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll laugh and have an enjoyable experience at a Marvel film.

What do you think? Cast your vote in the poll below and keep the discussion going in the comment section.

Not saying he's right or wrong, just thought this would be an interesting conversation topic heading into the weekend.

Never before have I seen an article so perfectly engineered to start a flame war, and Josh didn't even write it…

As a huge fan of Superman since I was a kid, I'll say he should know because MoS was flavorless.

Well, I guess this is required. Yes, he's correct. That gets box office results I will say, but Ant Man was flavor of the week

The way this is worded, it's really hard to argue

I like variety and I like moments of levity but of course I want "films that are interesting and make a lasting impact". Marvel also has films that are interesting and have a lasting impact

And who the hell would choose option 2? Serously, lasting movies over brilliant SFX and comedy everyday. That's why the godfather holds up over transformers.

Also, I guess this implies that Zack Snyder sat down and watched Ant-Man, haha

Jesus... Rephrasing what he said completely, combining it with harsh digs at Marvel and then claiming that "Man of Steel" has somehow withstood the test of time better than other comic films?

Talk about flame bait. I was going to actually discuss what he said, but this thing is all for the clicks. The only way to win is not to play.

You compared man of steel to Thor the Dark world? I don't get it. But to answer your question. Id say equal amount. Both sucked.

You're right, people are talking about Man of Steel, but the majority opinion is not a positive one. Marvel makes quality films, period, and their RT score is proof of that. Critical and consumer acclaim says that, overall, Marvel's film are interesting and do have a lasting appeal.

Let's all be honest to ourselves, Ant-man was repetitive. I know for a fact the formula these guys (creative committee) use to write all of their films. If you want predictable, watch a Marvel movie.

Fine, I'll bite. No, he's not right about Marvel being flavor of the week. Some of their individual movies (including Ant-Man) wouldn't be remembered if they weren't connected to anything bigger, but they are. They're part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Say what you want about the quality of the films within it, but the MCU will be remembered forever for its impact on pop culture. As for my expectations for CBMs, I'd prefer if all the films had a lasting impact, but I acknowledge that the majority won't do that, and will gladly accept simply solid movies.

Simply put...most CBMs do not have a lasting legacy. Some do, like the Avengers, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, X2. Most do not, like MoS. There are always gems in the pile, but most of the pile is somewhat forgettable.

They're talking about the Superman/Zod fight because of how stupid it was, and how it divided fans. They're not talking about how good it was. Also, the DCU has exactly one film in its entire lifetime so far. What else are you supposed to talk about?

Pretty much this. We're getting a wee bit too entitled, thinking that EVERY movie has to be as memorable as possible and have some lasting legacy to it...when in reality, those movies (ESPECIALLY cbms) are few and far between. Not even Batman Begins or The Dark Knight Rises has that memorable appeal - only The Dark Knight "transcended the genre", as Snyder put it. So it's perfectly fine to have our "flavors of the week", and it's perfectly fine to have these big event-type of films too.

This doesn't have to be an either/or flamewar.

Man Of Steel was in no way whatsoever a forgettable film.

It literally started the DCEU

Whether right or wrong his comments were petty. Small people need to say things like "not to be mean" before saying something dickish. Just say what you want to say and stand by it. The fact that the DCEU needs to constantly compare itself and say how it is different to the MCU just shows how scared they are to go against the juggernaut.

Another slow day for comic book news. Let it go. Nothing to see here. Stop making something out of nothing. If we’re writing articles about this we might as well discuss the big shit I had this morning....it was big. Discuss.

He has built a straw man argument on a fallacy. If you want to pretend that MoS was perfect, that's fine. It does not make it true. I liked Antman and would watch it again over ever having to bother watching MoS again.

I don't talk about any movie I have seen over and over. There are forums for that kind of thing for people who want to engage in those kinds of activities. So talking about a movie or not talking about it, is not an indication of how good it is.

I didn't like TDK or TDKR either. Those are not the heroes I grew up with. They are grim-darkened versions filtered through a cinematic lens and flavored with 'logical realism'. Like an elseworld tale.

Snyder put down every single character that isn't Batman or Superman.
That includes every other member of the Justice League, who are getting their own movies.

The shot at Ant-Man is a shot at Cyborg, Aquaman, Flash, etc.
Snyder is too dumb to see that, but you people should realize that.

What a load of garbage. Two years later and people are still talking about Man of Steel? Which people? I don't hear anyone talking about it except the people on this site. And that's because it's the latest and only DCEU film. How many people are going to be talking about MoS in the months after Justice League comes out? Ummmm no one? And it's talked about in the negative half the time. I'm sure Fant4stic is going to be talked about for a while too as a cautionary tale of what not to do. Is that the kind of talk we want?
